David Hampton: Tax everyone but us.

Well, David Hampton wrote his predictable column in the Clarion-Ledger yesterday calling for the legislature to raise taxes. He calls for increasing corporate income tax, top level of personal income tax, the "low" gaming tax, even a tax on cokes (that is cokes, not coke) is suggested (Column). However, there is one little tax exemption he fails to mention: the tax break newspapers get on sales taxes. You know, that part of the Mississippi Code that reads "Sales of daily or weekly newspapers, and periodicals or publications of scientific, literary or educational organizations exempt from federal income taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954, as it exists as of March 31, 1975, and subscription sales of all magazines." SEC. 27-65-111(b)

I am sick and tired of liberals trying to raise our taxes while they sit back and rest their tax-free feet on our overtaxed backs. What? The Clarion-Ledger is in trouble! We can't raise their taxes. They might go under. Well, they seem to have no problem with sinking other businesses. It's about time journalists and others who benefit from living free off the rest of us lead by example if they want to help solve our budget crisis. Want to raise our taxes, Mr. Hampton? Fine by me. However, let's raise yours first.

Repeal the sales tax exemption for the newspapers.

By the way, that makes five straight weeks that Hampton has proposed new taxes in his Sunday columns. And every week he makes some kind of comment saying that he knows it is "unpopular." I think that David Hampton is retarded like Ronnie Agnew.

Tell you what Dave, we are in a recession. What do you think HIKING the COPORATE income tax is going to do to Mississippi businesses?

Consolidate counties, merge some universities and that means JUNIOR COLLEGES IN THE SAME DAMN COUNTY AS UNIVERSITIES. We don't need two houses of the legislature. Make it one. That means no more conference committee BS.

and last but not least, legalize marijuana. Would cut down on incarceration costs and wasting law enforcement resources. Tax it. Yup. Tax it. Oh no, we can't do that. Why not? What is the difference between someone jammin' to some music at home while smoking weed or slammin' down some Jack Daniels? Zero. Its time to put some common sense in the laws. Most of the bad behaviors associated with weed are already illegal such as DUI, giving to minors, public drunkeness, etc.

Community colleges serve a different purpose than universities, so closing ones near a university is not a good idea. The university has higher tuition, no vocational or technical programs, nor the transitional aspects some students need between high school and college.

Also, how do you suggest handling the legalization of marijuana? The ABC handles all aspects of beer and liquor. How could you possibly regulate something which can be grown most anywhere? Illegal stills are still illegal, so how would you distinguish between legal and illegal marijuana?

Good question. How much money would we save by not prosecuting and arresting marijuana related crimes.

Also, how much money would we save if we got rid of most of the ABC. WHY do we need a warehouse? let the retailers buy directly. We don't need a warehouse and distribution system. Yes, I'm aware we make a profit but how much more tax revenue would we actually realize if that whole deal was shut down and ABC was enforcement only? The retailers I know would love it.

Hampton is a fish out of water. His opinion nowhere near represents that of the C-L's paid subscribers. Politically he is as ineffective and unpersuasive as Donna Ladd. They could send him to Tougaloo to teach a class or two with Stringfellow and very few would notice that he was gone.

I think a sales tax on newspapers is an excellent idea. Instead of just running their mouths about everybody else's taxes they could have a stake in the state being run efficiently or face the prospect of their taxes going up. Higher taxes are good for everybody right?

Can just hear old Dave's momma saying, poor David thinks his shit don't stink and the whole neighborhood is being bypassed because of his smell.

Mississippi has several exemptions from sales taxes. A large one is RESIDENTIAL utilities.

Broader, lower, flatter is they way to go for the State's revenue. Having anyone, Hampton included, picking winners and losers in our tax lottery is a travesty since we ALL benefit from state services.

I worked at the C-L for years during that time I would meet Mr. Hampton in the office or parking lot. Each time I got within 10 feet of him he would look down and not speak, even if you spoke first.

He is one of those guys that thinks you owe him, and he owes you nothing. He even in a newspaper 101 meeting told the group the C-L was a very conservative paper.

Like another comment above the readers do NOT match the leanings of the C-L and that is one of the many reasons not one buys the rag today.

Heck you can't line your bird cage with it now that it is so small.

What the Haiti are you talking about 2:59? Liberalism IS ALL ABOUT picking winners and losers. LIBS LIVE TO DECIDE WHO HAS BEEN NAUGHTY AND WHO HAS BEEN NICE.

David Hampton believes that 'Big G' Government is as big as it is BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE THAT BIG OR BIGGER.

Anything smaller is a MONUMENTAL CRISIS of epochal proportions.

Picture a competing daily that ran 70% AP STORIES but focused SOLELY on Madison and Rankin where the people with THE BUC$ LIVE for its subs.

It would be GAME OVER for Hampton's employment. There is NO VALUE ADD left in the C-L beyond Salter and Ramsey.

NOBODY GIVES A DAMN ABOUT RONNIE AGNEW OR DAVID HAMPTON.

The more they tax, the more they spend, so the more they tax, so the more they spend. There never is enough in tax revenue to ever make the government satisfied.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
