A New Front Opens in the War of the Bridges

Yet another front opened in the fight between former Jackson Area Federal Credit Union President Leigh Bridges and the National Credit Union Administration Board.  The focus of this fight? Gift cards.  Yup.  You read that correctly.  Gift cards.

Bridges and her husband Chad stand accused of embezzling tens of millions of dollars from her former employer for ten years.   NCUAB sued the couple in U.S. District Court and obtained a preliminary injunction freezing all  assets of the Bridges.   The plaintiff claims the fraud on the credit union's books was $95 million.

NCUAB filed a motion to modify, clarify, and enforce the preliminary injunction after it discovered the couple was redeeming gift cards gained through credit card companies to pay their living expenses.

The plaintiff seeks an accounting of all spending since the preliminary injunction was issued as well as an inventory of all items transferred to their home on the island of Utila, Honduras. NCUAB claims the Bridges have not provided a required accounting of their spending while violating the freeze order:

The NCUAB has reason to believe that frozen funds are being utilized to fund the Bridges’ living expenses as well. Chad Bridges’ rent and utilities is $2,900 per month, and his only income from unemployment is $235 per week. He must therefore be paying most of his living expenses with funds from some other source. Because all of Chad Bridges’ accounts are frozen, the NCUAB must presume that he is using some unknown amount of frozen funds to live, which is concerning to the NCUAB.

Also concerning to the NCUAB is Chad Bridges’ attempt to cashout his accrued leave from his former employer, the Mississippi Department of Insurance. A representative of that state agency sent an email to NCUAB counsel on September 2, stating that “Mr. Bridges has requested a cash payout of a portion of his accrued retirement/leave balance (240 hours)” The monetary value of the benefit is $14,865.60. That email was the first time NCUAB received notice of Chad Bridges’ cashout request; he did not notify the NCUAB.

NCUAB next aimed its fire at Leigh as it wondered in print how she was paying her living expenses.

Leigh Bridges was served with the TRO on May 29, 2026. Between June 1 and June 18, 2026, Ms. Bridges attempted to redeem a portion of her points for these cash-equivalent gift cards in an amount up to $200,000.00.

That effort was frustrated by a fraud alert on her account. Eventually, she was able to redeem the credit card points for at least $32,750 in gift cards since May 30, 2026. Ms. Bridges redeemed $12,000 of points on her American Express account for gift cards on May 30, the day after she was served with the TRO. She also redeemed points for gift cards on June 3, June 10, July 3, July 11, July 20, and July 26.

An NCUAB examiner stated in an affidavit:

One American Express record that I reviewed is an audio recording of a caller who identified herself as “Leigh Bridges.” On that audio recording, the caller provided personal identifying information to verify herself to an American Express representative. During the call, the representative explains that Ms. Bridges’ account was frozen due to a fraud alert triggered by an attempt to redeem millions of points in the form of gift cards on Leigh Bridges’ American Express card. The representative states that the value of these gift cards was approximately $200,000. Ms. Bridges confirms that the redemption requests were made by her and were not the product of fraud. Following Ms. Bridges’ confirmation, the representative explained that freeze would be lifted and that Ms. Bridges would be able to redeem the points in the form of gift cards.

The plaintiff learned of the gift cards from American Express at the end of July. All in all, Leigh redeemed $41,200 in gift cards in 2026.  NCUAB was not amused:

A document she provided to the NCUAB indicates that she has only $15,035.05 in gift card balances as of August 19. Subtracting that amount from the $32,750 in gift cards she redeemed since May 30, 2026 shows that she used at least $17,714.95 of the gift cards she redeemed, and quite possibly more, as of August 19, a span of less than twelve weeks. Frozen property is being utilized extensively to fund living expenses outside of the knowledge of the NCUAB...

The examiner stated American Express (Classic Gold) , Apple,  and TJ Maxx  issued the gift cards. Correspondence from the Bridges indicates Leigh has $15,035 in gift cards while Chad has $10,384.  The gift cards are the "equivalent" of a debit card and thus can be spent if an account is frozen.

Neither of the Bridges, noted the plaintiff, are employed after their employers fired them.  The motion posits the defendants can stay with relatives, "borrow from relatives", or use credit cards to pay their living expenses.

The case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan, III and Magistrate Robert Myers, Jr. Judge Jordan scheduled a telephone conference be held tomorrow.

Synopsis

Leigh Bridges is the former President of the Jackson Area Federal Credit Union.  She became President of the credit union in 2021 after serving as CFO.  The President signed all financial statements and handled all account reconciliations for wire transfers.  The National Credit Union Administration Board terminated Bridges after it uncovered the alleged embezzlement. The credit union accused her and her husband Chad of embezzling between $55 and 95 million.

NCUAB sued the Bridges in May. U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan, III issued a temporary restraining order against the Bridges in May and froze all assets at the request of the plaintiff.

The complaint claims Leigh Bridges doctored the books while looting her employer of tens of millions of dollars.  NCUAB alleged Leigh made bogus automated clearing house entries, wired large sums of money to her personal accounts as well as luxury retailers such as Tiffany's, and made fraudulent entries in the general ledger.  The couple used their share accounts at the credit union to further the alleged fraud.  Their lifestyle was so posh Mississippi Magazine featured their home.

The parent credit union accused Leigh of making over $51 million in false entries in the couple's share accounts from 2015 to 2026.  (Read the complaint as it spells out in great detail how the money was spent.  Earlier post with copy of complaint and list of the loot.

Judge Jordan issued a preliminary injunction freezing the Bridges assets in July.  NCUAB is the trustee for the assets and is allowed to seize any asset it determines were purchased with stolen funds.

The complaint charges the Bridges with  fraudulent misrepresentation (Leigh),  Fraudulent misrepresentation - financial transactions (Leigh), conversion of JAFCU funds (Leigh) , Breach of fiduciary duty (Leigh), personal liability under 12. U.S.C. 1787 (Leigh), Fraudulent transfers (Leigh),  Fraudulent transfers (Chad), Enforcement of constructive trust (Both defendants),

Mills added Tina Funez as a defendant in June. Employed at JAFCU since 2006, Funez became a branch manager in 2023.  How did Funez figure into the alleged scheme?  Keep reading.

The complaint claims Leigh added her friend as an authorized user of an American Express card in Leigh's name.  Funez ran up the card, allegedly charging  $508,035 which was in turn paid off by Leigh Bridges.   Leigh allegedly embezzled $14.4 million to pay the American Express card from 2025 to 2026.

Then there were the gifts as Leigh gave her friend as she gave Funez 30 handbags worth $2,000 each as well as a Tesla. The complaint states the Tesla cost $66,000.   Did someone mention jewelry?  Mrs. Bridges gave Funez expensive jewelry while Chad gave Tina a Rolex watch.  You can't make this up.

The embezzlement funded fancy vacations on private planes for Tina and the Bridgeses (sounds like a rock band).  The couple gave Funes $487,000 from their credit union accounts.  Funez also rents an apartment from the Bridgeses at a "kinfolk" rate of $500 per month.

The amended complaint charges Funez with fraudulent transfers and enforcement of constructive trust.

Leigh admitted in a motion to stay proceedings she met with federal prosecutors and agreed to accept a bill of information.  She exercised her Fifth Amendment rights in her answer to the complaint.  Chad said he was unaware of his wife's shenanigans as she controlled the accounts.  However, no criminal complaint has been filed in federal court.

Judge Jordan froze their assets, including retirement accounts and Chad's family trust fund.

Years ago, I wrote a check at the bank for cash. The teller accidentally gave me $20.00 to much. I didn’t count it. By the time I got home they were calling to let me know, no biggie, take it out of my account. How did these people take millions over years without it being detected???

No contrition, no mea culpa and nothing to indicate they regret doing what they did in the least. In fact, they are fighting tooth and nail to keep their stolen loot in spite of being caught stealing it. I hope the prosecutors, jurors, and judges take this into account. These people need to be taken down hard.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
