State Auditor Shad White issued the following statement.
Today State Auditor Shad White announced that Patrick Harris, a former Centreville Police Officer, has pleaded guilty to one count of Embezzlement. Harris pawned his assigned pistol from the Police Department to a pawn shop. A few months later, Harris also took two pistols from the evidence/property room and pawned them off as well.
“I’m thankful to the agents in my office for working on this case as long as the prosecutor who helped bring it to a close,” said State Auditor Shad White. “We will continue to work hand-in-hand with prosecutors to hold those who steal taxpayer money accountable.” Harris was prosecuted in Wilkinson County Circuit Court where he was sentenced to ten years’ probation. Harris was also ordered to pay $731.12 in restitution, $432.50 in court costs, and $750 in fines.

Probation for a person in a position of authority stealing multiple firearms? Does MS have a single serious judge?

My father in law, a very successful business owner who built and sold three businesses, said pay your employees enough or they will steal from you.
If he wanted guns to pawn, he could have just extorted them from thieves and bangers and never put the guns into evidence. "Gimme that piece and you can walk." Works on TV.
A relatively small fine and probation from a guy whose overall culture isn't afraid to go to jail anyway is a mockery. All that judge did was assure his next legal infraction will be much worse.
I will give the auditor credit. He sure lives up to his name.
