Seriously I really wish the fair location was moved out of Jackson. Jackson isn’t safe and I would be afraid for my and my family’s safety. This is a family event and should be in a safe location
Gee, four other posts right at 2 AM, all whining how they won't go to the fair because it's in Jackson. No agenda there, bedwetter. The fair is right by the interstate. It is loaded with cops. You drive 30 seconds (no lights) down High Street and whammo, you are there in the parking lot. With security. Real security, not rent a cops. I bet you hide for six more weeks in February.
Kingfish is right. I went last week. The security is fantastic. I had a great time.
FWIW, I think the Fair must be the safest event held in Jackson all year. As Kingfish said, the police presence is is overwhelming both in the parking lots and inside the gates. Gipson learned from the shooting at the Mudbug festival a few years back and made changes accordingly, instead of dismissing it as a perception of a shooting.
Also cut the closing times to 10 on weekdays and midnight on weekends. No more midnight madness which is when most of the crap started.
I miss the exciting times we had during the Mudbug festival-
Downtown, West and Southwest Jackson is a war zone: the very fact that that outlaw region is patrolled by three police forces is evidence of its danger. One wrong turn downtown and a driver is a block into Gunville Ghetto street battles, drive-bys and carjackings. Sometimes fear is a rational way to stay alive. There is nothing at the Fair that's worthy of my time or money and certainly not my blood. I agree that the Fair should be elsewhere, perhaps near the Ag museum area?
We were there Saturday night. Lotsa cops. Crowd was moderate, I'd guesstimate, and predominantly black. Price of a simple bottle of water was $3. Three dollars, I say! Beer was six bucks, an outrage worse than airport food. Gone are the days when we could have nice things and tread the midway with our girl on one hand and a big cup of beer in the other. Now we have to go to "the beer tent" and sit with a beer like kids in a school lunchroom.
Fairs are passionate anyway. I am sure this one was my last.
Sorry. Damn autocorrect again. That is to say fairs are passé, not passionate. Google does not regret the error.
We went last year and this year and felt safe at all times. We mostly go to see the livestock and crafts but my favorite event is the pig races. When we get tired, we find a table in the beer tent and people-watch. It's an annual thing, something that we skipped for many, many years, but we definitely enjoyed it the past two years.
Uh-huh. How many years has it been since beer was allowed outside of the designated beer area/tent?
Thank you. That’s what I say
Don't forget Dummy-Fish-Supreme, the same fair that was right by the interstate was right across the street from the Waffle House that was right by the interstate when a fair-goer from First Baptist was beaten to death for his ring.
And the same fair that is right by the interstate is the same fair across High Street, from the hotel where hoodlums killed a man for his meager belongings a few years back during the fair.
And the same location, right by the interstate, always full of Jackson PoPo, was home to the childrens' rodeo that pulled up stakes and headed to Hattiesburg due to violence at that location.
I could go on for an hour...
I was amazed at how clean it was and the overwhelming amount of cops was great. From the parking lot to the midway. LEO were everywhere.
It was my 1st attendance in years, and I was very pleasantly surprised. I don't love the Hat but he is to be commended here for making a wonderful event in spite of Jackson.
