Mississippi Today: Marve Who?

Notice anything missing over at Mississippi Today

Haven't figured it out yet?  Here's a clue.

Marve Smith pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery 6 days ago.  His Bill of Information all but names Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens and Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba as co-conspirators in the alleged bribery scheme for a convention center hotel.

Such news is major news and it was covered by all the media in Jackson except for one outlet, Mississippi Today.   The publication reported on former Ward 2 Councilwoman Angelique Lee's guilty plea yet somehow could not be bothered to cover Marve Smith's guilty plea and all that it entailed.

Mississippi Today engaged in similar shenanigans when U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate slammed Mayor Lumumba and his sister Rukia last year.  JJ reported on September 7, 2023:

There is only one reason why the online "newspaper" did not report the opinion: It did not fit the publication's narrative.  Such an omission is not malpractice or even yellow journalism but is instead a conscious decision hide news from the public because the opinion doesn't fit Mississippi Today's support of the Mayor.  MT had no problems covering the hearing when the Mayor's supporters were having their say.  July 14, 2023 article.   Why would Mississippi Today report on a hearing yet ignore the outcome? Earlier post.

Don't forget the Governor Tate Reeves' 2022 Labor Day press conference on the Jackson water system crisis.  The Governor slammed Hizzoner, calling him incompetent along with a few other descriptions.  However, the digital newspaper's editor spiked his remarks as he covered the presser.  Can't have Mayor Lumumba looking bad, now can we?

So if the Mayor or District Attorney is indicted, will Mississippi Today report it?

I was looking at the "Gaslight" production at New Stage all the while thinking about Lumumba and him gaslighting his constituents.

Why would MT be protective of Lumumba?

Mississippi Today isn't running a little right-wing pissant hate blog like you are. You are still seething and raging to this very day from being banned from commenting on JFP by Donna. You founded your little hate blog because you got banned. And now you practice censorship yourself like a petit tyrant

I wonder how many folks truly get their 'news' from that rag?

Anonymous said...

MT's liberal imperative precludes it from shining its light on a corrupt City of Jackson administration.

Mississippi Today is the bastion of "independent" journalism and truth. They are Mississippi's Al Jazeera.

Wow, 10:55. You're easily triggered aren't you? Do you feel better better after your little rant?

Kingfish said...

It's what they do. They will never critique the story or the work, which is fair, but instead go after you personally. In their minds, you are subhuman if you disagree with them and this deserving of no respect or courtesy.

Mississippi's Pravda. Right? (Or is it Left?)

Anonymous said...

To be fair I don't think the Magnolia Tribune covered it either.

@10:55 AM - Rukia, calm down Comrade.

wanna bet

11:20AM... Of course they did, as anyone covering Mississippi news would... https://magnoliatribune.com/2024/10/17/scope-of-jackson-bribery-scandal-comes-into-picture-with-new-guilty-plea/

MT will never criticize minority governance---anywhere or anytime.
They strive to sensationalize some minimal success while hiding its drastic failures, including criminal conduct -- primarily by not reporting them.

Selective coverage undermines the public trust. Activist journalism is unprofessional and a breach of ethical standards.

Attacking the person who called it out is a disservice to the profession.

This is what happens when a tabloid publisher builds a media empire, which political interests then clothe with legitimacy because it serves their interests- it drags down the whole profession. Obviously, I'm talking about Rupert Murdoch.

Philbilly's campaign to intimidate and silence the free press is having a chilling effect?

Anonymous said...

@10:55 yet you show up. Every. Day. Whose time clock you wasting; reading and posting snowflake comments?

Kingfish said...

The Wingate hearing gave it away. They covered it every day as Br'er Adam and Sista Mary just thought, they got Henifin now. Then the Lumumbas were body slammed on the courtroom canvas. Crickets.

When leftist and Marxist resort to ad hominem attacks and seething vitriol,
You know they don’t have a defendable position or logical response. They all know that this should be covered.

Anonymous said...

10:55 am. One word: Scruggs. Oh, lets make it 2 words: Dickie Scruggs. Mississippi Today is his. So all legitimacy goes out the window with the bag full of bribe money.

JFP and Donna? hahahahahahahahaha I thought that closed down years ago. The only thing it could publish correctly is the weather, unless that didn't fit their "cause".

10:55 AM, yea we hate leftist Marxism. We hate that Malcom X was right then and now when stating “that white person that you see calling himself a liberal (today its progressive Democrat) is the most dangerous thing in the entire Western Hemisphere. He’s the most deceitful.”

We hate watching white Democrats live safely behind gates or in the Republican controlled burbs, even sending “their children” to private schools while innocent poor children deal with the consequences of their lawlessness Democrat controlled cities, with some ending up in gangs or dying from stray bullets.

And we really hate watching propaganda outlets like the Jeff Bezos Post, NYT’s and Mississippi Today pretend to be journalists, and not give a f___.

Come on now, they can’t have the Jacktown blue-anon fascists finding out the truth.

This is why no one should ever get all of their news from one source. It doesn't matter if it's local, regional, or national, always check with sources you don't like and don't trust - as often as the ones you do. Otherwise, you just sit comfortably in your own echo chamber feeling confident in the righteousness of your ignorance.

12:38 PM, re: convicted felon Dickie Scruggs, one could wonder if there’s sealed docs on his deal somewhere to be unsealed 50 or a hundred years from now. You know, like the JFK files, or like the possible files on the coup Democrats used on Biden to take his Democrat presidential nomination away that he earned via millions of primary votes, and just give it to Kamala Harris, having not ever received even one primary vote at all.

Something like, did Democrats make it clear to Biden he better drop out or Hunter’s crimes would no longer just be ok?
Back to Scruggs, his brother in law Trent Lott announced on November 26, 2007 that he would retire from the US Senate - a full five years before his term ran out. Then two days later on November 28, 2007, a WDAM headline reads: Dickie Scruggs, 4 others indicted in plot to bribe judge. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

What's missing? Integrity. Journalists. Lack of bias. Anyone to the right of Trotsky.

In their defense they may not know about it. MS Today such a disappointment

JFP merged with, was purchased by or became Mississippi Free Press. D. Ladd is #2 on the staff ladder according to the website. Appears content at MFP is mirror image of JFP. Entertaining reading for as long as you can stomach it.

Anonymous said...

@ 1:42PM No, I don't wonder. Except to wonder when they'll take Trent's name off of the Trent Lott Leadership Institute at Ole Miss.

If you want to understand MT's singular focus, check out the "On This Day" feature for a few days.

WLBT HAS IT!

WARRANT ISSUED FOR MAYOR!

(a just practicing post for the possibility that Jackson's mayor could be indicted)

shadyal said...

I've signed on to MT's site...and signed off...no BS needed!

Anonymous said...

If the mayor is indicted will MT interview the sister?

Anonymous said...

Don’t slander Al Jazeera that way! Find fault in their coverage if you’ve an issue, but don’t dare compare them to anything in Mississippi, let alone Jackson!!!!!

Anonymous said...

@6:40 PM Surely we shouldn't slander an outfit that employs six reporters who are Hamas/PIJ terrorists.

Anna Wolfe with yet another article on the TANF stuff. If Favre and Bryant had attended Ole Miss, nothing ever would have been written.

Oh 10:55 AM, you're watching judgement catch up with those who are destroying Jackson by plundering every possible financial avenue at the expense of everyone who has tried to ride out the tsunami of disasters from polluted water to crumbling roads to out of control crime. I know it must be disappointing, esp. if you are not on the mayor's payoff list. It's all crumbling, so hope you have another income source. I'm sure JJ is a thorn in your side, but the community needs to know the truth. (BTW...is it you Rukia? You may need an escape plan - I've heard Venezuela is nice and accepting refugees)

Mississippi Today is no more slanted than this blog.

Anonymous said...

I never give MT any clicks. I refuse to help monetize a website devoted to deceit.

Anonymous said...

Well someone has to be around to keep an eye on the republicans. They have been busy bees as well and MT is only place I’ve seen it covered. Signed, a life long republican

Anonymous said...

Not that she is completely wrong in her premise but $100 bet 11:14PM votes democrat on 11/05.

Anonymous said...

11:14 - love your comment. I am more Democrat leaning, abortion access is a hot topic for me as a woman and as a mother of a girl. But I like your attitude. Come sit beside me… yes, both sides have their pros and cons, and both political parties need to be kept in like by strong (although often skewed) journalism. It is up to us readers to read both sides, even if it hurts.

A 10/8/24 TYT Sports YouTube vid “Brett Favre Welfare Scandal Journalist Facing Jail Time for Doing Her Job” has an MSNBC Anne Wolfe clip stating “this is the kind of corruption that Mississippians know all too well.”

If Favre committed a crime or crimes, then good for Anne! But, just how does Anne sleep at night pretending to give a s__t about ”corruption” while the Democrat Party she shills for uses crime and chaos to destroy cities like Jackson where children die from stray bullets, and where she and her Mississippi Today headquarters are located?

Oh but wait, please tell us we are incorrect, since it appears even Democrat shillers Mississippi Today’s headquarters are not in Jackson. Please tell us it is not true that even leftist Democrat Mississippi Today will not locate into their own Democrat controlled crime infested Jackson, MISSISSIPPI city, but instead, locates in the safe Republican controlled burbs. No possible freaking way!!!!

How many times has MT/Anna Wolfe written about the attorney from the AG’s staff who approved the USM volleyball court for IHL?

9:17 Call your doctor, a Xanax plus midol cocktail should do the trick.

So, they'll go full-bore after an R Legislator for openly bringing home the bacon to his district, but they can't be bothered to mentioned the mayor of the state's largest city bringing home the bacon in a brown paper sack for his own enrichment?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
