Today is the day we celebrate Christophe Colomb. Lost in all the controversy is the superhuman feat he accomplished. He wasn't just taking on an ocean but centuries of thinking the world was flat.* Neil Degrasse Tyson - a really smart dude - discusses his achievement and how finding America was one of the most important events to ever happen to the human race.
He also discusses what an s.o.b. Columbus was. No surprise. It took an s.o.b. to pull off what he did.
Although celebrated by the Italians, not every Italian is so enamored with Christophe.
What would Columbus Day be without a cartoon?

Much like reaching another planet. Deserves every second of his Columbus Day.
Somebody was going to do it. Turned out to be Columbus who happened to be a low-life. The world's not a perfect place so what do you expect? Not much has changed.
Columbus is a hero in Spain. Lots of statues honoring him there. He is buried in a beautiful Gothic Cathedral in Seville.
to 7:34pm.... columbus was never a miner. you are typical of the 99% who are totally ignorant when it comes to history.
It matters not how many good deeds a man does. If he does one bad deed then it is all tainted. Columbus did many bad deeds and should never be celebrated.
For all of you Columbus haters who get your history from The View, you may want to write this down: History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from, and if it offends you, even better, because then you are less likely to repeat it. It's not yours to erase, modify, or destroy.
It was only Christianity that argued the world was flat. Prior to the Dark Ages that was created by Christian ignorance, a good portion of the work had been mapped. The problem was that sometimes this cartography showed land masses where there no longer were land. This was due to the maps being ancient when sea levels were lower and the shorelines were far different. At the time of Columbus many land masses were already submerged. He had most likely seen many of these Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings and possibly had copies of them. He benefited from history being erased by ignorant religious zealots and those same zealots re-wrote history stating he discovered what was previously known.
Amen to 7:56.
Leif Eriksen might take exception to celebrating the second European to "discover" America.
"to 7:34pm.... columbus was never a miner. you are typical of the 99% who are totally ignorant when it comes to history".
You are correct sir, he never mined himself...He had an enslaved
Indigenous Population at his disposal for that...And get your times right...

Some of the trolls above are getting their history from Wikipedia, MSNBC, The View, and CNN.
There is no record of Columbus coming to North America. He explored the Lesser and Greater Antilles islands.
@8:32 is referring to the Piri Reis Map that shows Antarctica, the Hadji Ahmed map, and the Oronteus Finaeus and other amazing maps. These maps all pre-date Columbus.
the woke rubes taking about history on jj . that a scary thought
Many ethnic groups in our country condemn Columbus and Columbus Day. But the hundreds of thousands who are employed by the federal government will GLADLY take the paid holiday.
They then stay home and curse Columbus.
Can a single one of you boomer historians articulate why Columbus should be "celebrated" when he didn't discover anything because he never went to any uninhabited places? People who weren't Catholic didn't believe the earth was flat. The Chinese had already made it to the Pacific coast of North America. Vikings had already made it to Canada. Why are you so hung up celebrating the third place guy? Is it nostalgia from the Euro-centric colonialist propaganda you consumed as a child?
There was like no traffic yesterday.
Try watching De Grasse Tyson’s video.
@KF not interested in Black Science Man. I want to hear the ignorant hayseeds in your peanut gallery articulate their opinions.

@9:59 AM Mr. Woke, he discovered the West Indies for Europe. Unfortunately the West Indians didn't have access to the internet or they would have sent an email to Spain and saved him the trip.
7:56 for the WIN! Nothing else needs to be said.
Sure, there are records of Columbus being in North America. He probably used his credit card to pay for his Holiday Inn stay.
The Earth Is The Lord's and The Fullness Thereof
For some reason, I'm imagining a 22"-high crawlspace beneath a house, somewhere in West Jackson - or, at least on the West side of I55, where not every house is slab-on-grade. Within that crawlspace, someone is furiously typing into a smartphone, occasionally yelling "BOOMERS!". A ninetysomething widow, living in the house above - hardly a "boomer" - thinks she's hearing things.
Hey Fish King, you should try rewatching the NGT video. At no point is Columbus given any credit for his screw up. He never made it to his intended destination. The holiday was only ever named for him because Italian immigrants lobbied for it - to cut down on discrimination against them and tie their people to America. Jokes on all of us, last week DNA testing showed Columbus was half Jewish and likely not Italian at all. Maybe all the MAGA folks should stop trying to ban books and start reading them.
