The performance of Richard's Disposal over the last ten days should come as no surprise to anyone who followed the company in New Orleans Actually, please allow me to re-write that sentence. The non-performance of Richard's Disposal over the last ten days should come as no surprise to anyone who followed the company in New Orleans.
Devastating storms rolled through the Jackson metro area over the last ten days. Richard's Disposal ran one to two days late in picking up the garbage. The New Orleans company of course, blamed the storms. Richard's Disposal might have been able to get away with that excuse except there was one problem. Waste Management serves Hinds County, Madison County, Pearl, Ridgeland, Clinton, Madison, and the other burbs. Waste Management picked up the garbage without missing a beat even though it serves roughly the same amount of customers as Richard's Disposal.
Storms rolled through again Wednesday night, knocking out power to many yet again. The city of Jackson issued a press release yesterday:
Due to recent storms, trash pickup will be delayed today. Strong winds caused a temporary power outage at the Waste Management transfer station. This is preventing the transfer of trash collections. Crews are currently working to restore power and Richard’s Disposal will resume service as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience.
The transfer station did indeed lose power. However, Waste Management continued to pick up the garbage without missing a beat. Waste Management service areas such as Pearl, Clinton, Madison, Hinds County, and Madison County suffered no problems with their garbage collection yesterday. One official said the transfer station lost power but the company continued to accept garbage.
Richard's Disposal earned a less than stellar reputation in New Orleans after Hurricane Ida struck the Crescent City. The company's performance never recovered to pre-hurricane levels even months later. New Orleans residents would not be surprised to learn that Jacksonians are suffering the same fate.
Thus while the city and company can whine all day about storms and power outages, the bottom line is Waste Management managed to pick up the garbage when it was supposed to pick up the garbage while another company repeatedly makes excuses and that my friends, is the bottom line.

Jackson, The Bold New city melts once again into the Abyss.
The mayor fought tooth and nail for Richard's Disposal!
The mayor is worse than a nuclear strike on Jackson.
HA nice wink and nod to frank melton
Give ‘em hell, Frank!
Can someone validate if chokies trash was picked up?
Meanwhile, Waste Management has been picking up trash in our competently led suburb without any major delays (late afternoon pickup instead of the normal mid-morning, but still same day).
Is the $60K a month for IT still being paid ?
that is all that matters to the Mayor and his family ...
This is exactly the garbage company that Jackson deserves! lol
Well
Lumumba will go down as the worst and most corrupt mayor in America. How terrible is he. He’s nearly as corrupt as he is incompetent
with each self inflicted crisis in Jackson, my suburban home climbs in value.
Not only did WM pick up my trash on time, but City of Flowood also picked up all of my debris twice from the two different storms!
I think the problem is that too few in Jackson really want to work.
I’m sure that social media influence/SoundCloud rapper gig is going to work out any day now!
Lubumba is not corrupt. He, his decisions and his leadership are what Jackson’s constituents overwhelmingly voted for, not once, but twice. Quit writing articles vilifying Jackson and it’s misery, their misery is what they all want and they confirm it every election.
Yes, 10:58 his body guards pick up daily and burn all classified trash! The rest is dumped in a locked trash bin in the back of City Hall.
Now I’m just kidding, don’t run with this!
I live in Clinton and today noticed my water meter was leaking. I called the public works department and in less than 10 minutes an employee arrived, located the problem and in about 30 minutes he fixed the problem.
Has nothing to do with trash collection, just an example of a well run organization. LEADERSHIP MATTERS!
Weren't the latest storms Sunday night, not Wednesday night?
I saw them working off Northside this morning when I was coming back from the store picking up Gatorades for the guys working on our water main break up the street. I had plenty, so I stopped and tried to hand a few off to the guys on the truck - I was basically cursed at for stopping in the street by one of the guys on the back. Fuck 'em. Last time I ever try to extend appreciation.
Richards is working rather well, per our Mayor. The proper amount of money is being picked up and delivered on time.
Don't be so hard on the mayor, he is just marking time and keeping his name in the news so he can step up and replace ole Bennie. So be kind, he will soon be serving you folks from DC.
When you're looking for an excuse, any one will do.
Lumumba is no Bennie heir apparent. He won't get out of the primary and there ain't enough votes remaining in Jackson to carry him to victory.
You get what you pay for.
I reckon RInky Dink Inc. is short a few trucks and crews these days. Many of the trucks I see are rentals not in RDI livery. Soon Mr. Richard will ask for once a week pickup but with no reduction in price.
@1238 Waset Management employees are very courteous. If I am at home I give them water and they truly appreciate it. So that tells me the company is run well with good employees. Richard's is a joke
Waste management should fall under the city government. This way, the workers can get a pension and payment into PERS to keep retirement going for state employees. Rankin, Hinds, Madison counties should do away with contracts.
12:53
And as everyone knows, especially Chokme, that’s where the real money is.
11:20 -- But... but... but... the mayor received a prestigious award from Harvard for his leadership.
My power was out last week for 60+ hours and we had very severe weather Sunday night.
MW was here today with both trucks right on schedule, well, actually a little early.
So how is the RFQ going for bids? Has it been sent out yet are will they wait for another "emergency"?
The buddy system is working as usual in Jackson.
Waste Management’s trucks appear to have a much higher storage capacity than the trucks that Richards uses. More trips to unload for Richards means less time to pick up garbage.
The highly paid IT expert at Richards Disposal must also be working for JXN Water. For three weeks now, people have been unable to link their meters to their online accounts, although I’ve been assured their best and brightest minds are working diligently on it. If I had ever been unable to fix a programming glitch in three weeks time, my computer science professors would have given me a big fat F.
