Some fireworks took place at the 1% Sales Tax Commission today when Hizzoner tried to stop two Commission members from speaking in public about the commission. One of those members just happened to be one Mr. Pete Perry so one can imagine how that worked out for the Mayor.
Commissioner Jonathan Lee was invited to speak at Precinct 2's Cops meeting last month. He sent an email to all members, including the Mayor, inviting them to attend the meeting with him. Pete Perry accepted and attended the meeting. Ward 4 Councilman Vernon Hartley and Parks & Rec Director attended the meeting as well.
Mr. Lee provided the small audience (less than a dozen people) a general update on the Commission. He discussed how the Commission operates and how it approves projects. However, Hizzoner tried to tell Perry and Lee they couldn't speak about Commission matters on their own in public and well, just watch how it all went down.
Kingfish note: I'm willing to bet there is one little reason why the Mayor turned into a control freak. There is a little nugget in the video that gives it away. Can you figure out what it is?

You're just gonna have to tell us. No one has time to watch a 14min video filled with stammering and looks and sounds like it was filmed with a potato.
Lil' Choke is a BUFFOON
With all due respect Kingfish, I do not agree.
After watching the video twice, it is clear that the Mayor said that any commissioner was welcome to speak however they want, but also felt that it was important to differentiate if the person was speaking for themselves or speaking on behalf of the commission, and that what is being communicated is consistent.
I don’t think that the mayors position is at all unreasonable.
Mayor certainly doesn't mind speaking about the Commission in public. See Pickett's town hall forum last year where he repeatedly trashed the Commission.
I'm guessing the nugget came when the mayor said someone told him about what they perceived to be negative statements surrounding the city (& therefore the mayor) were made at a community meeting a by members of the 1% commission (who discussed the commission's functions, etc.). We know the mayor is thin-skinned. He took the second-hand info personally because he wants to be the one controlling communications - in other words, his lies should be the only messages residents receive.
@7:57
EVERY position the mayor takes is unreasonable.
No one listens to Chokwe. The local cities watch for comic relief.
Over the years I’ve been opposite Pete and on the same side as Pete. Pete is going to be himself and speak his position. Under the theory that God has a purpose for all people, Pete serving as foil to the fool Mayor seems about right.
Dictators always want to control the narrative, right? Right.
Thanks Pete and Johnathon! And thanks KF for posting.
"the city is never getting the water system back....." Right!
Why not give the mayor more power? Look how well he has handled the water fiasco, keeping the roads undrivable allowing midnight drag racing on I 55 highway, leading the city to the number one murder capitol in the country, third world handling of garbage pick up, unable to hire cops and the ones he has hired are sub par, etc.
Lumumba doesn’t want to let taxpayers know anything about money or where it’s used. What a complete fool
Sounds to me like the mayor wants to control the information being that his concerns of the discussions were what’s going on negatively in the city.
Mayor, you’d have to be blind not to see how you have ran this city into the ground, we don’t have to have someone tell us but it’s nice that someone is speaking out of all your blunders.
Also with all due respect to 7:57-the mayor only wants what is being communicated to be consistent with what HE wants said to the public. In other words, don't talk unless I okay the content. We can't let those ole taxpayers know everything, now can we?
Pete is a good guy and gets things done in a professional manner. Jackson is lucky to have him. Not sure why the mayor thinks this is an issue worth addressing. It sounds like he needs to find people who can provide him with accurate notes from meetings he doesn’t attend.
The ego of that guy. He wants control over everything, but is incapable of producing results. And, he's starting to refer to himself in the 3rd person. Pure vinegar and water.
Does he go anywhere without those two stooges?
What is the mayor’s sister’s connection with the trash collection company with the “temporary” contract?
7:57 AM
2:15 to 2:30 of the video proves you flatly wrong, Mr. Lumumba.
Admittedly, I am not a connoisseur of such proceedings, but there wasn’t anything food fight-y that I heard. I heard a lot of bloviating from the mayor acting all biggity and incessantly uttering the word “right” “right” “right” with irritating regularity.
I watched the whole video. Missed the nugget from Mayor Word Salad.
Chowke is a typical Marxist progressive commie-pinko. They must control the narrative and the media; treat the sheeple like mushrooms...keep them in the dark and feed them bullshit.
Democrats almost always want to silence their opponents. See how the use the press and the social media companies at the national level. It’s what dictators do.
Lumumba would do well to hear the shit I say about him openly (and often) in public as an official taxpaying Jacksonian.
Attn 9:02 AM What is it that you don’t like about the way he is leading the city of Jackson?
Did anybody happen to count the number of times that ego maniac used the word "right" to prop up his dumbass argument against free speech? I wish Pete would have responded, "wrong" at least once. That ploy and the boy mayor himself are both such condescending tools! He ain't clean or articulate. Damn, it's amazing how many animals run out in front of me when I'm passing by his house!
This is Putin-esque! Making vague allegations of disloyalty to the state. Mr. Lee shouldn't have apologized for shit.
"We don't work for the city, we are appointed by different entities" - Jonathan Lee slaps!
10:45 in the video
So that's how you pronounce his name, huh? Show-quay.
The mayor's request seems legitimate. Having been a member of a public board, it is essential to have a clear line of communication on behalf of the board. That person is usually the chairman (or president) of the board.
However, the chairman, president, mayor MUST lead by example. When the mayor openly criticizes others, whether board members, councilmen, etc., he needs to suffer the consequence. The consequence is the First Amendment.

It was a staffer that he sent at the last minute to see what this meeting was about. He and his staff was butt-hurt about the late notice so they trumped up allegations to give cause for him to even bring it up and chastise them for not asking him for permission and guidance. If neighborhoods want to have candid meetings in the future, I would say expressly did-invite the mayor so that they don’t feel obligated to send him a notice.
What about the financial statements for the Year ending 9/30/2022 ?
Have we seen them ? Are they available to the public ?
As a recovering Accountant/MBA , Financial Statements should be provided within 3 months of closing. (See Tann,Brown CPAs address to the council)
ludumbda- “The Commissioners can’t speak about the commission because it’s a commission and Commissioner Lee and Commissioner Perry are on the commission, right, and the commissioners aren’t qualified to be commissioners because they can’t speak to another commission, right?
I think labeling this as "food fight" is misleading. Everyone concerned expressed their opinion. No big deal.
Where did Pete or Johnathon represent themeselves as the spokesman for the commission? Are not citizens entitled to an opinion?
Let them fight all they want! It's 1% of sales tax in the poorest city in the world.
When one is gaslighting the public, one must be careful to keep everyone on the same script.
I’m guessing the nugget is about the minutes. Pete’s right, what did his diatribe have anything to do with the minutes? No action was taken.
Mayor wasn’t expecting Pete to call him on that.
Nope. Y'all are missing the nugget. It's what was said at that cops meeting.
Telling Pete not to talk is about like telling an irate woman to calm down.
10:57, it's a simple fix with a disclaimer. The individual members should lead off with saying that they are speaking for themselves and not for the commission.
I’m sure the statement that Jackson would never regain control of the water system might have set the Mayor off into control freakdom.
Everyone watching this was thinking from the start about Perry’s question at the end: WTF does this have to do with the minutes?
Mayor said that the city will never get the water system back.
A council person was at the COPS meeting apparently lying to the attendees and was called on it by Pete and Jonathan. What council person is lying about Ted Henefin?
1:25, good point!

Thanks for your opinion, Mr. Jokeway
LMAO. Lumumba claimed a "resident" complained to him about the water situation. The 1% commissioner shot that down and was saying that they were through talking about the 1% commission and a lumumba lackey said Mr. Henefin lied but was rebuffed by finding what he said was quoted by the news 3 separate times.
If Pete is on the commission, then he can speak for the commission, right?
BTW: Paris Air Show next week.
In other news, another library closed today and a beautiful pregnant lady was murdered on Antard Ladumbass watch. Right.
I watched the entire video, what a waste of time for all concerned. Seemed like the Mayor wanted to take someone to task for what someone else told him.
I would be nice and say go fuck off with this he said, she said bullshit. I’m a grown ass man!
All a pretext to try and muzzle the Commission members Lumumba doesn't already command either by appointment and/or employee status. He doesn't want to seek and reach agreement on content and message, he wants total dictatorial control. That is why the control freak is sending employee staffers to these meetings in order to monitor what is and isn't said by attendees.
Hey Hondo, up yours.
Off topic but the Jackson water crisis made the New England Journal of Medicine today. Title of the article is: A slow moving disaster-

@10:57 - Legitimate? Hell no.
The Mayor was wanting to make it an argument about "speaking FOR the Commission" - at least that's what he argues for the first five minutes of his bitching. From what Lee and Perry both said, they were not speaking FOR the Commission, Lee was asked to speak ABOUT the Commission.
What the Mayor has his panties in a wad about had nothin to do with the comments Lee made ABOUT the Commission, but things that were said after Lee's presentation was over and they were just part of the crowd.
Like Perry said at the end of the meeting - Mayor can't and ain't gonna tell him who he can talk to or what he can say. He hasn't been and won't be speaking FOR the Commission but will be speaking for himself. Didn't sound like he included it but I'm sure that means the Mayor will continue to hear commentary that might not show much appreciation for Lumumba's corrupt and inept administration.
The Mayor and his crew just KNOW the city is going to one day get back its water system. The only problem is no one in the room (a rhetorical room) thinks the city should have it back but for him.
During the negotiations over the stipulated order last fall, the Mayor held out on major point, calling Henifin a Water Manager instead of what he really is, a Receiver. The feds and Court took it away from Jackson. The Court appointed H to run it. Judge Wingate said H works for him. Period. So when Perry, Lee, and Hartley joked around later about the city not getting back the water system, THAT is what set off the Mayor.
Off topic but the Jackson water crisis made the New England Journal of Medicine today.
Riddled with factual inaccuracies and connect-the-dots conspiracy theories.
Chuck was to be the conduit for ALL information as it concerns Jackson. Do not let him have this power. To many lies and plans that never will work. Anyone on the commission should speak to any concerns that us residents have. If Chuck gets his tender feelings hurt he is not meant for politics. His new world order is failing us all. But he doesn’t seem to care. Too much blame to pointed elsewhere. Right. Keep an eye on when he uses Right. There is a pattern. None are good.
I enjoy reading Pete Perry’s comments on nextdoor speaking facts and trying to talk sense into the senseless from time to time.
There's a Napoleonic Complex in play here. Everybody knows it and everybody knows who is afflicted by the malady.
The mayor wants total control and cannot accept the fact that he neither HAS it, nor can he DEMAND it.
'Somebody told me something you said about me in another meeting...er, uh, a constituent reached out to me, right'. Does this remind you of a ninth-grade girl?
Of course, as always, the mayor is violently opposed to a white, male, republican having or expressing an opinion about the radical new city or its issues.
One thing Antar could not control, spin, or misdirect: The recent federal court order in which Judge Henry Wingate let it rip.
"..it is clear that the Mayor said that any commissioner was welcome to speak however they want.."
Ah, 7:57 - Only a narcissistic control freak would make such a comment. He has no right or authority to regulate speech. Period. Lumumba does not 'own' this committee or its work-product.
