It appears there might be some fireworks over well, some fireworks in Madison County. John Wood of Canton wants to place a fireworks stand next to the historic Chapel of the Cross.
Mr. Wood submitted an application for conditional use to Madison County for his property on 200 Mannsdale Village Drive.
The Mannsdale-Livingston Heritage Preservation Overlay District will consider the application tonight at the Chapel of the Cross Parish Hall. Posted below is the zoning application and the map. If the District approves the application, it will be considered by the CommissionThursday at 9 AM.

If the gets to the Planning and Zoning Commission and that group sends this to the Board of Supervisors with an approval-stamp, the citizens should march.
Madison County (particularly the Gluckstadt area) has long been the fireworks capital of this state.
That's not too far from where I live. I love fireworks.
Booooooommmmm!!!! Ok w me - I don't live anywhere near there. Isn't that the way it works? Who cares if it doesn't affect me.
Whats wrong w/ having a fireworks stand there?
No, not in communities full of families, pets and trees!
The Preservation District- created by the County Supes some 20+ years ago - has now become a nuisance to them because it’s getting in the way of high-dollar commercial activity and the dollar signs in their eyes. It was created for the very purpose of keeping this type of activity from encroaching on that area. Now we’ll see how much integrity the supervisors have in keeping their word to protect the area when they see dollar signs everywhere. It’s so short sighted of them. Ultimately, the area and the whole county will benefit from the historic and beautiful nature of it and ultimately that will translate to more dollars for the county in the long run. But they’re too short sighted to see that. Thank you, JJ, for covering this story!
Mississippi becomes more and more like the bureaucratic sharthole blue states every day. Another regulation, another permitting process, another absurd imposition on private property rights. This man's property is out in the sticks -- let him do what he wants on HIS land, particularly as he's trying to make money on an otherwise non-income producing property. For those that want to regulate and restrict, get up of your arse and go make some money in the private sector, then buy your own property, and then place all the restrictive covenants you want on it until fulfill your heart's desire! Don't tread on me! And who in the hell is the "Mannsdale-Livingston Heritage Preservation Overlay District"?? What a bunch of crap!
(And no I don't even know who the landowner is)
Not in my backyard!!!! Take your stand elsewhere. But let me know where so that I can come buy some because fireworks are a blast!!
Better place would be on Galleria Parkway
A better place would be Jackson, because no one would even notice the fireworks noise because of all of the gunfire.
If the picture is representative of the location, it's a bad idea for the business. Low car count and visibility from the main thoroughfare.
I didn't know you were allowed to set off fireworks at the stand where you bought them.
If you build it, they will come.
John Wood is the guy who owns the Sno-Biz, goals/trampolines, and crawfish place next to Matheson gas (formerly Air Liquid) on Weisenberger Road in Gluckstadt.
"Mississippi becomes more and more like the bureaucratic sharthole blue states every day."
140 years of Democrat rule will do that. But, yeah, you can't buy wine and have it shipped to your house, you can't buy raw milk, you can't open up a health clinic without proving "need", you can't sell cars in MS without having a physical dealership. It's embarrassing that we have folks calling themselves Conservatives leading this State when all they do is protect their cronies from competition.
Anyone know the story on this parcel of land? It has been vacant for years after being developed for a neighborhood that never developed. Was it shot down? Seems like a prime spot to put some houses and now they want to put a fireworks stand on it? Something doesn't add up.
Ms O'Neal is exactly right! At some point in the past, the Preservation District was set up by a competent Board of Supervisors (one might assume).
Today, the District gets in the way of 'The Three Amigos' (Banks, Griffin and Votes-For-Sale-Steen and their repetitive plans to destroy and over-ride anything that makes sense to residents/voters.
There are two things that top the list of things Madison County DOES NOT need more of: (1) Convenience Stores (sponsored largely by Steen) and (2) Firecracker stands.
There is a reason Madison County is the Go-To place for fireworks for 7 counties. Figure it out.
Meanwhile: Fireworks are a blast in Madison, The City. There's an ordinance prohibiting them, but...what the hell.
I say set up a fireworks stand adjacent to Half Shell Oyster House! After all, Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, Easter, Father's and Mother's Day, Juneteenth, the 4th of July, Independance Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving only come around once (each) per year.
The Chapel is my church, and I can think of no reason to deny this request as long as it is done safely, and I think it will be done safely. On a positive note, hopefully it will introduce our beautiful church to even more people.
@4:15 PM: The politicians haven't changed anything other than the letter behind their names. The "D" became an "R" beginning with Goldwater and finishing up with Reagan, who destroyed the Middle Class, to the delight of "conservatives".
@3:13 PM - you aren't from around these neck of the woods, are ya? There is a huge traffic count on Gluckstadt Road.

"It appears there might be some fireworks over well, some fireworks in Madison County."
Run it thru Grammarly, gadfly.
Still waiting on the "bang," lame.
Attn 5:14 I guess you want to ban Christmas decorations so highly viewed in Reunion for the same reasons you stupidly brought this up.
I say, if we can clog up the roads for a day in the country so the church can makes it’s coin, they really have no high ground to deny anyone else the opportunity.
Maybe Madison County is the go-to place to go get fireworks because it is the safest place in 7 counties to operate a cash business.
And what church does not want more people coming by? Hell, the church should open a fireworks stand. Or maybe that is not the clientele you want to invite to church.
I live in the area. This intersection is the most dangerous one in the tri county area and getting worse every year. I would highly recommend Mr Woods find another location to rent out to a fireworks vendor. He is only doing this because he was not allowed to put a convenience store on this location. He is just jabbing at us that call this area home.
Who owns that completely undeveloped property on that corner which has a dental office in it and nothing else?
Do they not know there is a bald Eagle nest and a several ivory billed woodpeckers that call those trees home? Has there been an environmental survey done on that location?
@7:17, one key difference though is that the day in the country proceeds go to historic preservation of the church building, and to the church’s servant ministry, ie, assisting needy in the community. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, day in the country started as a way to raise money to fix up the at-the-time abandoned and overgrown chapel. Anyway, it is not the church that makes these decisions, it’s the preservation overlay district. This is their decision. And ultimately the board of supervisors.

If you were really a member of that particular church, or of that sect,I'd imagine that the very LAST thing you would want, would be its being "introduced to even more people".
Our family are of an equivalent sect, within a non-Christian faith. We attend a similarly historic edifice in a high-status location, in a state far from Mississippi. Our own faith actively and officially discourages converts. And, as newcomers, we were stared-down, until congregants were certain that we were not social-climbing wannabes, moving up to that sect, and to that particular congregation, for the cachet membership would confer upon us.
Not all religious sects are about growth. Come to think of it, if you actually knew the degree of hands-on involvement required of members of that particular congregation (Episcopalians pride themselves on doing their own cooking, their own catering, and their own gardening, despite being known as a sect peopled by the wealthy and educated. Chapel of the Cross goes FAR beyond that.), I'm DEAD-sure you wouldn't be hoping to attract habitues of fireworks stands.
But the church can still have all the people out blocking the road for the Day in the Country, right? Hypocrites.
Bill Dees: The only people removed from the middle class by Reagan style "supply side economics" were those people who moved to the upper middle class.
Of course Bill can rebuke me with an article from Robert Reich. Reich is the Clinton era Labor Secretary loved by NPR. Reich makes $250k from Cal-Berkley teaching one class, a class that "reviews" his writings.
Just put the damned fireworks tent up! Fireworks stands have operated in the Gluckstadt area for years with no attention to minor details, such as permits. A couple of years back the supervisors claimed they were gonna enforce a permit regulation. Did they?
Shit like this is why I chose to live in Brandon. Mayor Mary and her private army of HOA’s is Ughhh.
I’m only asking because I don’t know who the person is who has applied for the permit, but is he someone who will bring property values down? Is he the type that would possibly “sneak in” or attempt to sneak in multi family units like a person did in my community and ruin it? If the citizens have a valid concern then they should be heard and the supervisors need to listen and heed their concerns. I’m all for protecting property values and I wish I had know them what I know now where I live. I hope the citizens are successful in staring their case.
Hey 4;25 PM, you know how this coalition between Steen, Banks and Griffin came about, right?
Because a group of “I don’t want to buy the 500 acres of land but I also don’t want it developed into an extremely nice and upscale high end low density residential development either” idiots ran someone against Bishop in the Republican primary, and beat him, then lost to Democrat Banks in the general.
Steen, Banks and Griffin do not care about the area between Ridgeland and Canton.
If the drivers and voters are any dumber than in Mississippi, please list the state so we can scratch it from the next move list.
Bill Dees, you poor lefties; math just ain’t your cup of tea is it? So you just repeat what you’re told to repeat.
If you want to see a destroyed middle class, go to Democrat controlled California – where, as one Democrat business owner said after leaving the state, “I don’t want to raise a family where there’s only a wealthy class and a serving class, and no middle class.”
It’s plain as day and as simple as 2 + 2 Bill, just looks at the cities and states controlled by Democrats.
Interesting.
Between this and that area over by Deerfield, some good land use stories in the news.
@5:15 AM - Thank you for remaining in Brandon. We appreciate it. We don't need ignorant residents who don't know where the city limits are for Madison the City. Hint: That property is in the county, stupid.
fireworks are nothing but glorified litter..........just like those damn balloon releases
@ 9:30 - 'Our family IS'...not 'Our family ARE'.
@ 6:53 - You may be right. We'll never know how D.I.Young would have worked out long term had Steen not upset his re-election bid. District voters were still pissed at the way Andy handed the seat to D.I.
Steen joining the two black democrats as the 3rd democrat has effectively sold out the county on most every decision since Steen came along. He doesn't appear to be real smart but knows the art of greasing wheels and palms.
But I reckon things could be worse. We could still have John Bell, Howland, Steen, Griffin, Banks and Espy...as solid as a majority can get. Did I leave out Rudy?
And as usual the petitioner wasn’t prepared
Got frustrated and stomped out..
Watch the MC PZ meeting on Thursday am….
All that land out there is former plantation land, thus we have a heritage preservation overlay district. Need to keep it as close to plantation style as it was 200 years ago. Church was originally a part of the plantation.
You know fireworks might bring out the wrong folks to the plantation, I mean church.
That is not NEXT TO the church. You can't see the church in this photo. This down the street, in a development that has sat almost empty for 10 years minus the Dental office that was just built. And who cares? Fireworks stands are temporary structures and then they disappear. Slow news day?
8:18 why in the ever living more hell would I know where the city limits are if I don’t live there? Of course I’m ignorant of that. What, do you think the rest of the metro takes a Sunday drive in Madison county or Madison the city every Sunday or something?
The whole county is a shitshow, legally speaking.
@12:46pm - You can apply your last sentence to the entire state.
I keep hearing "tent" but in some places, like up and down hwy 49, they construct metal buildings that sells fireworks.
Not true 2:55. The 'metal building' you're talking about is a permanent warehouse that sells fireworks seven times a year. The rest are tents. Prove me wrong by supplying a photo reference.
11:03 AM, are you mad at the world and looking for excuses as to why Democrats can’t run a nice, clean, safe city?
Race hustling to get people mad enough to vote?
Please tell us the reason for your digression.
@12:46 PM - If you don't know where the city limits of Madison are, then why show your ignorance by posting a "Mayor Mary" hate comment for land in the COUNTY?
It's because of Mayor Mary that Madison is rated the #1 city in Mississippi. How's Brandon doing, bright spark?
Ban the damn things...they drive animals crazy and harm people with PTSD, many veterans that we all 'thank for their service.'
But I guess there is no better way to show love for China.
