U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate canceled two hearings scheduled for today on HB #1020 after Hinds County Chancellor Dewayne Thomas issued a temporary restraining order against part of the bill.
The NAACP asked the Court to block the appointment of four new special circuit judges created by HB #1020 with a temporary restraining order. The new law directed the Chief Justice to appoint the judges by May 8.
Judge Wingate scheduled a hearing this morning to determine whether the Chief Justice enjoyed absolute immunity from the lawsuit and another hearing this afternoon for the TRO request. The Court punted to the Chancellor and said it can hold said hearings at a later date if necessary.

A pandering MS Chancery Court Judge holds up a Federal Hearing. Only in MS.
Wingate avoiding having to make a ruling? Tell me it ain't so!
The chancery court didn't "hold up" a federal hearing, it just made the hearing unnecessary because the plaintiffs already got what they were asking for. There's nothing remotely unusual about that, especially when plaintiffs file the same or similar suits in multiple courts at the same time.
Which means this goes to the MS Supremes before Feds see it again.
What a sorry anti-American bunch of plaintiff lawyers.
If Jackson doesn’t want the state’s help, move our capital and let it fend for itself. Personally, I’m tired of hearing about Jackson and it’s jackassery.
Wingate must be exhausted. That's the fastest he's moved on a case in decades!
It’s a state issue. Not a federal one.
I can’t understand how this lawsuit can win in a court. The state can absolutely enforce laws in a city. These are state laws that are being enforced. The citizens of Jackson are also citizens of Mississippi.
100+ Jackson black families with murdered children/family members ought declare class action against NAACP, Lumumba & COJ, hire a black law firm on contingency, sue for money plus enforce 1020.
