Waller Waves Goodbye

Former Chief Justice and failed gubernatorial candidate Bill Waller, Jr. will not run for Governor.   Speculation ran rampant Mr. Waller would run against Governor Tate Reeves as an independent.  However, Mr. Waller met with his family and chose to stay on the sidelines.   It appears there will be a Mano a Mano matchup between Governor Reeves and Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley.

Excellent decision. Being a spoiler for the Republican Party is not a good legacy.

Smart decision. After the crybaby got his thin skin hurt last time saying that Reeves ran a dirty campaign and refused to endorse the Republican nominee after his defeat, he would have a hard time selling some of us that we should support him again this year.

Reeves basically ignored him through the first primary - certainly did nothing that could be claimed negative. When it went into a runoff, Reeves campaign did what normal campaigns would do - pointed to the weaknesses of their opponent - something I guess Chief Justice Waller was not used to having to put up with while on the bench.

But Waller did the same - remember the commercial depicting Tater as being a young tot in the kindergarten playground? Guess Waller thought 'negative' only went one way.

And, Waller couldn't beat him this year - could have made him spend a lot of money, and let his handler Josh make a lot of money - but in the end, would be doing nothing but helping Brandon. Which may have been Democrat Waller's intent all along.

Well…Presley will be offended if someone steps on his blue suede shoes….will he be the next cry baby? Tate is going in because the real voters see what he has done to put the mayor of jackson (lower case j until it becomes a substantial element in society) in his rightful place. On another note, the Zoo should be decommissioned and the animals sent to other Zoos who can properly care for exotic animals. It’s not humane to keep the animals at the jackson Zoo and let them suffer due to incompetence.

Absolutely can't stand Tate but cannot vote for a Dem.. I suspect there are a lot of people who feel the same way.

Being on the bench tends to make one assume his shit don't stink, as it were. Waller, as every soul who rides the pine in a black robe, thinks (or knows) he is not to be crossed, vocally opposed, criticized or even smirked at while all robed-up. The power to cite people for contempt has got to be an overwhelming feeling. And when one retires and takes that pious persona into his new world....he's got a reckonin' comin'. Maybe the boy needs a Harley and a trip past Waterworks Curve to pump his ego.

I like the Waller family more than Reeves, but that last campaign did not go well. Waller needs to stay out and keep his mouth shut.

What a sad day for Mississippi! Chief Justice Waller cares more about the state and the people of Mississippi than he cares about political parties. That’s a rare, underappreciated quality. Chief Justice Waller is not only brilliant, but he’s also a genuinely kind person with impeccable character. He’s exactly what this state needs! Unlike many politicians, he’s the type of person who would be willing to reach across the aisle to find the best possible solution for an issue. One day I hope that people can look at the actual candidate, instead of just the political party!

Not @4:35 but, rather, in regard to 4:35's comment, yes, Tate is going in again. But it's not based on Tate's record, nor is it based on his party affiliation. Right or wrong, like it or not, most people vote color, and you know I don't mean red or blue, either. And *that* is why Tate will return to office.

Support Reeves, Abolish State Income Tax, top priority, State is at a big disadvantage against Tennessee, Florida and Texas.

"he’s the type of person who would be willing to reach across the aisle"

That policy hasn't worked in decades. (For local, state or national politics).

If Waller were such a liberal, why did Tate want his endorsement?

Maybe Waller’s problem is that he actually cares for people’s good and well-being instead of pandering to the type of person who thinks capitalization is subjective. He would have be great for Mississippi, and I’m bummed he’s not running.

Does that apply to the Jackson peanut galley as well?

621, statistics proves you wrong. Or at least, half wrong.

One 'group' votes a straight ballot, based on color. When color is equal, that same group votes on party; always the same party.

The other 'group' is segmented, with the larger segment (60%) voting Repub; the smaller segment (12 +/-%) voting Dem; and the remaining segment moving back and forth, depending generally on the candidate. Sometimes on the issues. Sometimes a combination of candidate and issues

MS is 37% black; Dems baseline number is 44%. With the black vote being cast 95% for the Dem, there are clearly a break in the other 'group'.

Understand your theory - and the result is as you state it. BUt the basis of your theory needs a little refinement.

And, Reeves wins in November - and would have beaten Waller again should he have run. After Waller exposed himself, and his lack of preparation for the race (thinking he didn't need to think through it ahead of time) his numbers this time would have dropped 5% or more.

808, Any candidate would want, and expect, a party primary opponent to give at least lip-service with an endorsement. But a bigger reason is that those folks that voted for Waller, to a large degree, were Republican voters - and as the Republican candidate, he wanted to show a unifed party.

Find me any candidate, in any election here in Mississippi or elsewhere, where the winner of the nomination did not solicit the endorsement of his party challengers after the race was over; regardless of their disagreements. And show me the very few losers that refused to do so. (OK, there is Chris here in 2014, but lets go to normal campaigns.)

Waller running was nothing more than MT's wet dream. Presley doesn't have a chance.

"Support Reeves, Abolish State Income Tax, top priority, State is at a big disadvantage against Tennessee, Florida and Texas."

Damn right. The only difference in Mississippi and those states is State income tax. Gotcha.

Tate’s personality doesn’t help his campaign; however, what he has done for the State over the past 4 years has been great strategic leadership. He’s a smart guy and is on the right track to eliminate the State income tax to help bring businesses to Mississippi.

If the state income tax is eliminated, other taxes will make up the lost revenue. The overall tax burden simply will shift.

WALLER LIVES TO RULE ANOTHER DAY...

Breaking: Waller will be appointed to head up the Justice Division of the Capitol Police and Prosecution squad. To calm the natives, he's bringing in Rukia and Blackmon in advisory capacities.

Stokes will be asked to write the policy and procedures manual. Queen Mary will be tapped as Drug Czar and McDaniel is expected to be targeted as the new legislative liaison (someone who can effectively work both sides of the aisle).

Held my nose and voted for Tate last go round. Wasn't a fan of any of the Republicans. Waller has the "I'm a judge and I know best, don't question me" mentality. I get it, most politicians have it, but he really does have it big time. Had LOW expectations of Tate, however he held office in a difficult time and to my mind didn't embarrass the state. Sad to say but that is all I try to expect from public officials these days, local, state and especially those sent to Washington. I will vote for Tate again and would have in the primary against Waller. Dreading another round of elections though. UGH!

If state income tax is eliminated, we will end up with the crushingly high property taxes of Texas. Mississippi doesn't have the tourism of TN, much less FL, to make up the difference. I voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 and Jim Hood in 2019 because I support expanded Medicaid. This year I won't bother voting at all.

Anonymous said...

@ 10:43 and millions more people, and industry and many other revenue streams than Mississippi. They can eliminate the income tax because they take in WAY more from other areas than Mississippi does.

Republican who voted for Waller last time.
Guess it will have to be Tate this time? Haven't been impressed with Presley so far. He sounds like an absolute redneck, and hasn't made any comments other than to say how awful Tate is. His being Elvis' 2nd cousin twice removed does not impress me and does not qualify him for office.

It's truly astounding how many people are commenting that Chief Justice Waller is entitled or thinks his **** don't stink just from his time as a Judge. I'd be interested to see how many of them have actually met or know him because I've never heard anyone else say the same anything even remotely similar to those comments.

...Me thinks the comments are from either Tater's PR team or a whole bunch of voters who believe Tater can do no wrong because he's a "Republican."

The present election cycle is not that interesting. It will be a story of incumbents. What's going to be interesting is four years from now watching chowder-heads like Fitch, Watson and Hoseman on the ticket for Governor with one of the Blackmon twins opposite.

Who the hell is M.T.?

And 4:06 - Maybe it's because you hang out at the law office and country club and most commoners don't.

It's not humane to have a zoo in the first place.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
