Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
On Friday January 13, 2023, at approximately 7:20 p.m., the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received a report of head on collision with serious injuries on Greenfield Road near the intersection of Highway 468 near Whitfield. Rankin County Deputies along with the Pearl Police Department, Pearl Fire Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Monterey Fire Department, Rankin EOC, Pafford Ambulance and Aircare responded to the scene.
Once on scene, responders found that a Toyota Passenger Vehicle and a Mercedes Benz SUV had collided causing heavy damage to both vehicles.
The male driver of the Toyota was seriously injured. Medics from the fire departments, Pafford and Aircare began immediate treatment on the driver.
Despite the best efforts of first responders, the male driver of the Toyota succumbed to his injuries and passed away while being transported to UMC on the Aircare Helicopter.
The driver and passengers of the Mercedes received non-life threatening injuries and were all transported to a local hospital.
Rankin County Coroner David Ruth responded to UMC where he recovered the body of the deceased.
Greenfield Road was shut down for over 2 hours due to the accident and the reconstruction investigation.
The accident is currently under investigation by the Rankin County Sheriff’s with assistance from the Flowood Police Departments Accident Reconstruction Team.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all agencies who responded and assisted with the incident.

Most likley crazy people.
Tragic. But it's never necessary for one agency to publicly recognize or thank other departments for responding. That might be appropriate if it was a law enforcement picnic.
That intersection needs a light in the worst kind of way.
It was tragic for sure - it may not be necessary to say "Thank You" to responding units but it sure is Courteous-
"We would like to thank the MHP, Pearl PD, Rankin S.O. Dispatch, the wrecker service, Pafford Ambulance, the T.V. station, all the rubber-neckers, everybody who heard about it on a scanner and rushed out here, three motorists who pulled off the side of the road when they saw blue lights, the coroner and all who stood back 200 feet."
