Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announces the successful prosecution of Brittany Carter for Murder in the 2019 death of Chornell Mayfield.
In 2017, Carter and Mayfield were involved in an ongoing dispute over a mutual love interest. On March 30, 2017, Carter intentionally struck Mayfield with her SUV causing severe bodily injuries. Mayfield never recovered, spending over two years in a coma before succumbing to her injuries.
A Hinds County jury found Carter guilty of Second-Degree Murder following a weeklong trial in Hinds County Circuit Court before the Honorable Betty Sanders.
“It is a tragedy any time a young person senselessly loses her life over a personal dispute,” DA Owens said following the verdict. “It is especially tragic here where the victim was rendered comatose for two years before untimely dying as a result of her injuries. I hope this verdict brings some closure to the victim’s family.”
Carter will be sentenced on December 2, 2022, and faces a term of 20 to 40 years in prison.

"Nah."
Yet James Heath Kitchens continues to walk free as he's a "good ole boy" even though he murdered the mother of his child by running over her.
Justice for Brittany Rhea Phillips
Wondering how much that 2 year coma treatment cost us taxpayers?
