Update (#2): Oxford Police announce arrest. See bottom of post.
Update (#1): Statement from Mayor Robyn Tannehill.
A driver ran over two Ole Miss students in the parking lot of Oxford City Hall early this morning, killing one while severely injuring the other. The Oxford Police Department issued the following statement on Facebook:
On Sunday, October 16, 2022, at approximately 1:14 AM, the Oxford Police Department received a 911 call by passers by that there were two people injured in the parking lot behind City Hall. Our officers and the Oxford Fire Department arrived almost immediately and began tending to the two victims. They were both transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi. We are running down every lead and are asking the pubic for assistance. Attached are photos of persons and vehicle of interest. If you have any information please call OPD at 662-232-2400 or CrimeStoppers at 662-234-8799.
The female victim is a student Blanche Williamson of North Carolina. She has a fractured pelvis and is suffering internal bleeding.
The male student was Walker Fielder of Madison. He graduated from Jackson Academy. It was his 21st birthday. Williamson was his girlfriend. Fielder was the Rush Chairman of Sigma Chi.
Oxford police released these photos.
Update (6:15 PM): Oxford Mayor Robyn Tannehill issued the following statement on Facebook:
I cannot let the sun go down on this terrible day without making a statement regarding the tragic event that happened in our community early this morning. As many of you have already heard, two students were injured in the parking lot behind City Hall. They were both immediately transferred to Baptist Memorial Hospital - North Mississippi. Sadly, the male student, Walker Fielder from Madison, Mississippi passed away from the injuries sustained. A female Ole Miss student remains hospitalized in Memphis. Please follow the social media accounts of the Oxford Police Department for information regarding the details of the incident and arrests. Information will be provided to the public as it is appropriate to do so. As this is an ongoing investigation, information may not be as readily available as some would hope, but I promise you that these families and finding justice for these students are our top priorities and the case will be handled with as much compassion as possible for those involved. I am proud of the Oxford Police Department and their dedication to these families and to getting answers. They are ultimate professionals and I am honored to work with them.I am writing to you tonight as a Mother with a broken heart for these families, for their precious friends, for their sorority sisters and fraternity brothers, for their hometowns, and for our community as we all weather another terrible storm. I am writing to ask you for your prayers for Walker’s Mom and Dad and Sister as they mourn the loss of this young man who was handsome and kind and talented and loved by so many. Pray for peace and comfort for them that only comes from our Heavenly Father. I am asking you to pray for complete healing for the female student. Please pray for wisdom for her doctors and nurses. Please pray that her injuries and her heart would heal. The physical and emotional pain these families are experiencing is unimaginable.Oxford is a community that comforts those that need comforting. Perhaps that comes from practice and from times of trials that we wish we could pray away, but nevertheless, Oxford always steps up when things are hard and when people need us. These two families need us. They need our prayers. They need us to surround those that love them and be God’s hands and feet. Times like these make us treasure our time with those we love. You have my commitment that we will continue to do all we can to make Oxford, Mississippi the safest community to go to school, to live and to visit.
Update (9:35 PM): Oxford Police issued the following statement at 9:00 PM:
Since the tragedy that occurred early this morning, our investigators have worked non-stop on identifying two suspects involved in the death of Walker Fielder and the injury of a female Ole Miss student. We have identified the suspects as Seth Rokitka and Tristan Holland, both of Collierville, TN. Moments ago in Shelby County, TN, Holland was taken into custody for Accessory After the Fact and will face extradition back to Oxford. We are working actively with local, state, and federal officials to bring Rokitka into custody. He is driving a Toyota Tundra with Tennessee license plate number 0J76U6.If anyone has information on his location they are to contact the Oxford Police Department at 662-232-2400 or CrimeStoppers at 662-234-8799.

All I see out of Oxford and Ole Miss are death and tragedy.
That is horrible.
I saw a group of young girls darting across traffic last week and they came so close to getting hit.
It happens so quickly.
With these photos they won't be free for long. RIP.
I’ve heard from my child in oxford that it was much more than a hit and run, that these guys had been beating up the young man. Either way, such a tragedy. The drunk students in oxford are out of control.
I am not sure what is going on at Ole Miss and the Greek system. Supposedly this tragic accident stemmed from fraternity issues between the victim and the assailant. I was in one of the main three fraternities, my wife was in one of the main sororities, and my daughter is in one currently. Today’s Greek system has an entirely different feel versus 30 years ago. Even the big fraternities and sororities have some very shady and suspect members. I think the out of state population has changed Ole Miss for the worse. I am praying the young girl that was hit will survive. I can’t imagine what these parents are feeling. I hope they find everybody involved very soon, and I hope they put them in prison for life.
I talked to my son this morning and heard much the same, 2:22. It’s sickening
Ban football in Oxford. The Grove and the Square are hotbeds for violence and racism. National Guard is needed to take over that town.
Most of the frats are a pay to play on campus drinking club at this point. ABC is too politically cucked to do anything and the university police don't want the bad press so LE is hands off unless someone goes public with being raped, beaten up, or killed.
I am terribly sorry for the families of both victims. I feel like the perps will be caught and hope justice will be served.
3:50 pm, you are wrong or misinformed regarding ABC. My daughter tells us about somebody new getting an MIP or ticket for a fake ID almost daily. Four of her guy friends were arrested this weekend. Supposedly, if a student uses a real license to get in a bar, the charge is a felony for identity theft. She has had ABC come into private sorority parties and write MIPs.
When will the Ole Miss Chancellor say enough is enough and do something to end the excessive drinking (much underaged) and violence. It’s time to step up and be a leader.
How is this terrible tragedy linked th the Fraternity system even if the thugs were in a Fraternity. Typical knee jerk comments. I show about a lack of personal responsibility.i
Enough with the acronyms already. What the hell is ABC MIP?
When Mississippi Universities started selling beer at games, that was a clear signal that alcohol and sports are connected at the hip. Of course they have been for decades. Alcohol sales just ratcheted it up.
Enter the gate pretty well zonked, top that off with four or five in the stands and you're good to go. If you can just remember where your truck is.
@4:01 What adult had been arrested under the social host law involving a Greek organization? Most of those first offense MIP tickets are no big deal once they get before a judge and they come from the bars and not the frat houses.
Alcohol Beverage Control. Minor in Possession.
ABC - Alcohol Beverage Control
MIP - Mississippi in Peril, errr, Minor in Possession
Every person that was with the driver of the vehicle needs to be charged as an accessory after the fact. The police and Ole Miss officials need to take a hard line on this to prevent future incidents.
From what I hear from Oxford, the two boys have been identified and are from the Memphis area, neither are Ole Miss students. Supposedly a fight started in a bar that resulted in the couple being badly beaten then run down intentionally. This is so tragic, my heart breaks for the families.
A lot of freezing cold takes in the comments. It'll be public soon enough I am certain, but the suspects not only are not part of the greek system - they aren't even students. But go ahead and use this tragedy to further your own agendas.
"When will the Ole Miss Chancellor say enough is enough and do something to end the excessive drinking (much underaged) and violence. It’s time to step up and be a leader."
According to the article, this incident occurred at 1:14AM downtown. How can the Chancellor or even University Police have any control over what happens off campus? I know nothing of the fraternity problems up there nor the sororities but if there are problems, then yeah, the Chancellor is responsible for that but policing the whole city does not fall under the purview of the Chancellor.
From on campus beatings, to fistfights of baby-men “brawling” in the stadium, to this, Ole Miss is a disaster. The parents encourage the binge drinking and partake in the bad behavior with their own kids.
What a joke of an “academic institution”.
So embarrassing.
Parchman won’t be kind to these thugs.
Hearing suspects may not be students. There are names floating around.
Does it really matter if this heinous crime happened on or off campus, was or wasn’t fraternity related? Our entire country is becoming meaner, more vicious, and lives don’t matter to those who take them. This is so heartbreaking. I pray for the victims and their families. Can you imagine receiving that call, that your child has been so savagely beaten and murdered. It makes me sick. Please let these animals be caught and brought to justice. And God help all of us.
3:28…why go post something as I’ll informed as what you posted? The suspects are non-college students from Memphis. They aren’t in a rival fraternity or whatever other stupid rumor you’ve heard.
The tragedy is horrible enough without ignorant comments like this.
Ok, knock it off with the Ole Miss comments. From what I am finding out, the suspects are not Ole Miss students but troublemakers foreign to Oxford. If what I am hearing is true, the deceased acted with honor.
Putting this together from multiple social media, it appears that the suspects (from Memphis and not students) were hitting on the male victim's GF (a victim also) and he pushed back. Then they ran both of them over.
Deceased victim had just turned 21 and is from Lake Cavalier, Madison.
5:24 PM Wealthy white kids don't go to Parchman.
A fairly large number of attorneys and influential people in MS went to Ole Miss.
I doubt a situation where non Ole Miss students assault an kill Ole Miss students is going to sit very well with this crowd as it shouldn't, so the shitheads from Cordova (as heard through the grapevine) are on their way to prison.
A child is dead. His parents and sister are devastated. The least the posters can do is stop this wild anonymous speculating until the authorities complete their investigation. This is common decency and every unsubstantiated rumor is a dagger to the heart of the family.
Larry Jones
This is sad to the core of humanity. Please stop with the comments about students at Ole Miss . This is not the place or time. Let these parents and friends grieve in peace. It is the criminals who will have their day in Court. May God have Mercy on these young people hurt and killed along with their families!
Suspects are two punks from Collierville, TN, per release from Oxford PD. No connection whatsoever with Ole Miss.
Oxford police is reporting that the accomplice is in custody in Shelby County TN and still searching for Seth Rokitka the shithead who did this
I called my son about noon today to ask him about this. He told me I woke him up and he had not heard anything about this.
@9.25 PM
Thanks!
Larry, so the devastated parents are actively reading every comment dropped at JJ? Hard to believe.
@9:25 pm with that nose to the ground reporting. Good job. Such enlightening news
Oxford and Ole Miss are out of control, I’d be hesitant to send kids there.
Too much emphasis on partying, now you’ve got people being savagely beaten and murdered outside of a bar?
Not to mention the drug culture which has led to a high number of fentanyl overdoses
Ole Miss student here. Ole Miss is a great place with many great students. The word around campus is that the scumbag kids, who are not Ole Miss students, INTENTIONALLY ran over the 2 victims for some sort of "revenge". Oxford police do a great job, but they need to focus more on the entire square and surrounding area. Instead, they camp out at the popular bars and give out hundreds of MIP and PI tickets, instead of doing roadblocks are patrolling parking garages etc.
Side-note: Supposedly, The mayors husband, Rhea Tannehill, is an attorney specializing in underage drinking and pushes a quota on OPD.
https://www.mississippifreepress.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/OPD-Tannehill-Ethics-Complaint-mailed-May-28.docx.pdf
To me, this was a preventable tragedy and OPD need to focus more on citizen safety rather than capitalizing off of 19y/o Jiimmy who ordered one beer with a fake ID.
Prayers to the Victims!
Hope they don't turn the investigation over to Seth Tindall. He REFUSES to release any information about any murder in Mississippi. His reply is always: I'll turn over the results to Lynn Fitch at the conclusion of the 4-month investigation, so she can sit on it for another 8 months.
This had nothing to do with the Greek fraternity’s. This had to do with some thugs who don’t even go to college there being thugs
I cannot stop thinking about the parents who lost a son and have a daughter clinging to life. Over something so stupid.
I hope these kids rot in prison and I hope their parents realize what utter failures they are too. You created these little killers. Perhaps you should have focused more on the basics...like DONT MURDER PEOPLE.
The world would be better served with the dead young man still in it.
Cannot say the same for the criminals.
It seems unlikely the fugitive kid is still alive
@3:28
We are “Out Of State” Ole Miss family whose daughter graduated with honors in 2020. I can assure you that she was not a trouble causing student who has anything to do with an atmosphere of Ole Miss that you are trying to project and blame on Out Of State students and their families. She, like MANY Out Of State students, was highly respected by her peers AND she also highly respected her fellow classmates and the student body while she attended Ole Miss. She did great things while at Ole Miss and she contributed heavily to its academic culture as well as to its student body. She was highly respected by administers, professors and even the Chancellor. Do I think she was exceptional or an exception regarding Out Of State students? No, I dont. I think she was like most all other Out Of State students at Ole Miss. She loved where she was and she embraced all it offered and gave back to Ole Miss all that she could during her 4 yrs that she was there. Ole Miss will forever own her heart.
I’d like you to back yourself up with any kind of substantial documentation that supports your theory that “Out Of State” students are wrecking the city of Oxford and negatively impacting the reputation and safety of the campus. Because I personally know many current and past Out Of State students at Ole Miss who are doing quite the opposite. Just because something tragic happens that involves an Out Of State student does not mean that Out Of State students are the root of all bad things happening in Oxford or at Ole Miss. When trouble comes, it comes from everywhere…..even from In State students and residents.
Prayers to the families of the two students involved and may the deceased young man RIP and the injured young lady recover.
~Signed IN NAME NOT ANONYMOUSLY, Angie Knapp from Out of State IL.
So the killer is a union electrician, doesn’t live in Oxford, not part of the Greek system and is not an Ole Miss student?
If so, this tells us a lot about the previous comments and those making them!
Larry, 8:59 etc., you’re wasting your time with the Ole Miss haters. They are obsessed!
These drivers were thugs from Memphis and not part of Ole Miss. Large events held any where attract these types. So very sad for families of students. The only thing good is if people will be more careful when there are 100,000 extra people in town and that still is a large price to pay. Really sad!
@10:20 PM. What a stupid thoughtless comment! I’m more of a reader than a poster of comments and perhaps you should do the same if the only contributions you can make to the discussion is to attack the person who is simply reminding everyone there is a family out there that is devastated about the loss of their child. Show some respect!
I was up there this weekend. LE needs to have walking patrols instead of camping out. And I still haven't figured out the horse thing. Do they plan to trample wrongdoers? That's a large accident waiting to happen
Thank God he is in custody!! Now....all you people who have been bad mouthing Ole Miss and Oxford concerning this incident, would you please EAT YOUR WORDS!!! The "perps" in this case had nothing to do with either the beautiful town or the University!!! Take your hatefulness elswhere!!!!!
October 17, 2022 at 9:41 AM
@ 10/16/2022 10:55. I am so very sorry that you are soooo naive. You best open your eyes!!! Partying and drugs are in every college town. I have 2 in 2 college towns. I was in the ER last weekend with one of my kids, fortunately not this type of outcome. And say all the Partying and drugs coming thru that ER.
The suspects have zero to do with Ole Miss and the poor victims are just that victims. This could have happened in Memphis, New Orleans or anywhere.
But the incident did happen there in Oxford, and others have also said there is a lot of nefarious activity around the Square and they don't feel safe. Whether they're OM students or not, the culture of partying is attracting things like this to happen
We got frats having a huge brawl at a game, literal beatings and murders outside of a bar, 16 fentanyl overdoses in one weekend this yr, etc...
The IBEW union sponsors Ole Miss football. They run ads in the stadium during the game.
