Greenbrook Flowers has served the Jackson community for generations and has remained downtown. Unfortunately, it suffers from a plague of petty vandalism. Posted below is a video of an attack that took place less than ten days ago.
The hoodlum walked up to the window and looked inside Greenbrook. Once he determined no one was inside, he proceeded to smash the window just for the hell of it. He didn't take anything nor go inside the building. He just smashed the window because it was there.
Another hoodlum slashed all of the tires on Greenbrook's delivery vehicles Friday night.
Such misfortune has tormented the storied florist for several years. The owner tried to get help from the City Council but was completely ignored. JJ reported two years ago:
The owner of Greenbrook Flowers went to City Hall Tuesday night and
pretty much spelled out why businesses leave Jackson.
What is really sad is not one of these goldbricks sitting in front of her said a word. Not.a.word. The Mayor was silent. No promises to fix the problem were offered to Mrs. Dearman. The City Council just sat there, unified in its silence. They all bitch about businesses leaving Jackson, the need for tax revenue, and how much we need jobs in Jackson. However, none of them could say a word to a business owner pleading for help on basic government services. None of them have a clue about leadership. None. Meanwhile, Mrs. Dearman left City Hall even more frustrated.... and probably more likely to leave Jackson. What I didn't include in that post was what transpired immediately before and after Mrs. Dearman's comments. A Jackson resident complained about the fire department. The Mayor discussed the complaint with him and put him in touch with the fire department. Commenting immediately after Mrs. Dearman were the activists who want the city to identify officers involved in shootings. The Mayor discussed the issue with them for another ten minutes after their time limit tolled. Meanwhile, bums proliferate on the streets because city attorneys tell JPD they can't do anything about them. The Mayor can gripe all day long about businesses leaving Jackson but these videos show why businesses leave Jackson.

To those of you that “stay and fight for your city instead of running from the problems,” this is what you have to look forward to, if you’re not already suffering from it. Leave while you can, you’re just swirling the drain on the toilet. The city needs to fail so the feds take over.

As I have said before Baby Chock wants to be a "national player" (playah?) so bad he can taste it. (I'll bet he has dreams of a fancy office and fawning staff in the Longworth or Rayburn HOB.) Too bad being same is way out of his league. Let me make a modest proposal (with apologies to Jonathan Swift):
Mr. Lumumba put all your efforts into turning Jackson around. Build coalitions between black and white. Fix the streets, fix the water system, enforce the laws, fix the schools. Vociferously support a DA and judges who actually wish to prosecute crimes and put the bad guys away. Once these projects are completed successfully then you might have something relevant and helpful to say to the national audience.
By the way, even without doing anything meaningful to turn Jackson around say hello to your next Representative from Bennie Thompson's district.
I really want to be sympathetic, but businesses (and, for that matter, people) who choose to remain in Jackson when they have the means to leave are willing participants in the Crime Victim Volunteer Program. The city must be allowed to collapse before its politicians and voters realize that their way doesn't work. That won't happen as long as decent people remain in Jackson and use their money to prop up this disaster of a city. The political power and economic power must be aligned in order to resurrect Jackson, and that will only happen once it hits rock bottom. Don't be the last one out.
Still waiting on Fed Up in Jackson to provide SPECIFICS as to what he/she wants suburbia to do to stop Jackson's decline. Its easy to whine about "being a part of the change for the better in Jackson" but much harder to define specific actions that can be quantified and measured.
10:05. as long as MS remains the state of blame the past, black and white will continue working together in some cities while resenting each other in others. jackson unfortunately is the center of the blame whitey movement. until those in the west/north/south want to work with the east it’s just going to continue its downward spiral.
By the way, even without doing anything meaningful to turn Jackson around say hello to your next Representative from Bennie Thompson's district.
Yep.....I agree that is the path he is pursuing. By the way, Bennie has held that seat since 1993 and to this date has only done two things: collect his paycheck and eat lunch.
In and around downtown Jackson there is an element you find in many cities much larger than Jackson: Homeless mentally ill and drug addicts. They are especially bad in downtown Jackson because that is where they get fed and find a hole in which to shelter. If Stewpot and the like are going to feed these people the city has got to have a serious plan to manage these people during the night time hours. It's a big city problem. Jackson only wants to pretend to play like a big city.
Erick Simmons would argue otherwise. Winning Jackson in a primary is no longer the only path to the nomination. The Delta tolerates Thompson but doesn't truly view him as one of their own. Lumumba has even less in common with the rest of the district. He certainly has faced ZERO economic hardship in his life.
He certainly has faced ZERO economic hardship in his life.
All his opponents need to do is flash a photo of his new Eastover/Leftover 4600 sq ft high brow digs when Antard starts talking all that yang about knowing the plight of the poor and downtrodden. Like the kids of many Marxists he's got a silver spoon stuck in his mouth.
Why all this attention for Greenbrook? My business has been burglarized and vandalized several times over the past few years and I didn't go bitching to the city council; I called the police, provided video of the incidents and filed with my insurance. When my family started this business a few generations ago, the police were proactive and the courts actually punished offenders...we held out hope for long enough, but after a few car burglaries and a driver delivering raw materials was almost killed by a "misunderstood" yoot, we decided it was time to go. As soon as my building is finished in Rankin County, Baby Chok can kiss my ass and my tax money buh-bye!
Oh, and Tate - we're back working! Come and have a cup of coffee with us!
It would appear that this is not particularly a "Jackson" crime problem, but rather someone who has a beef with the nice folks at Greenbrook. Between slashing the tires on the delivery vans, smashing the windows, and other crap over the year, this appears to be aimed at the particular business. And isn't being done as most crime, with the intent to cart away some goodies.
Bet this guy would follow Greenbrook into the burbs if they were to move - ain't that far for someone to go that has a grudge.
Now, it would be true that if the perp were to get caught in the burbs, his prosecution and sentencing would be much more severe than it would be with the Judges that are elected by Hinds County voters.
most commonly a former employee or boyfriend of employee or similar. Green brook needs to start with asking current workers or those that were recently employed.
Nope. It's street bums. There are different people in the videos. One crazy woman last year did a damn grotesque strip act on the street in front of the window in the middle of the night one night.
Want to see the future of Jackson. Take a drive through downtown Greenville and the rest of the town. A once thriving area that has become a sad place to visit.
KF, you're so sure these acts are not being performed by someone with a grudge, then explain why the other businesses on State St in that area aren't being victimized? There are plenty of buildings with Windows, and cars with tires, on state and the surrounding streets.
You think all the "street bums" had a meeting and decided to only attack this one building? Or they all randomly selected Greenbrook? You sound naive.
Homeless mental illness, drug addicts, or even village elders from Pelahatchie . . .
I have no sympathy for any idiot that chose to remain in Jackson.
Way back in the 90’s, I had a business in downtown Jackson that I closed after 6 years. As with all retail endeavors, it had challenges every day but downtown revitalization was a much ballyhooed concept at the day. Lip serve only from the maor and city council and outright opposition from the god awful JRA (Jackson Redev9lpement Association) who literally laughed in my face at some of my requests that were tried successfully at other cities. It’s disgraceful and, as soon as Madison gets a hospital, Jackson will become a ghost town.
Speaking of street bums, what's the deal with the 3 'camper/picnickers' that have their sleeping bags permanently staked out under the I55/N'side Dr overpass? Seems like they've been there a couple of weeks? They leave em rolled out during the day... looks like they're on the beach.
@10:05
You surely are aware that chokwe lives outside of Beenie Thompson's district right! Chokwe lives in district represented by Micheal guest and Roger wicker. Hell... the eastover NE Jackson crowd is who funds these Republican clowns. Remember audio Romney bush all held 10k person fundraisers at the houses in eastover. That's not Beenie Thompson's district.
Hey! To everyone here postulating that the owners of the Greenbrook have a disgruntled ex-employee or have brought this upon themselves:
If that where the case, then why did they take time out of their busy lives (they are small business owners, just to remind you) to go before a dismissive City Council that ultimately couldn't care less about their vital concerns?
