Metrocenter Angel Busted for Fraud in 2012

It appears our Metrocenter Mama was busted for some fraud a few years ago.   A Jefferson County jury convicted Emily Sanders of two counts false pretenses in 2012.  Circuit Judge Lamar Pickard sentenced her to serve ten years in prison consecutively but the second ten years was to be suspended if she repaid $130,000 to the victim.

The verdict states she "fraudulently" represented to Dudley Guice that she had an agreement with Moran Foods to open a Save-A-Lot grocery store in Fayette.  Guice invested $130,000 with Sanders.  She was granted parole in 2014 and is currently on probation.

The Natchez Democrat reported in 2013:

A Natchez woman will spend 10 years behind bars for her part in a business scheme that reportedly bilked an investor by never opening the business into which the victim poured their money.

Emily Sanders, 53, 302 Mansfield Drive, was sentenced in District 22 Circuit Court in Fayette Monday to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years probation for her October conviction on two counts of false pretense.

The sentencing magistrate, Judge Lamar Pickard, also ordered Sanders to pay $132,000 in restitution.

At that time, officials said she had allegedly told a Jefferson County resident she was looking for a business investor. Sanders reportedly told the investor she had already collected three-quarters of the funds needed.

However, the business reportedly never opened, and even though the money was supposed to be put into an escrow account, that never happened, officials said.

Sanders’ husband, Merrick Sanders, was also charged in March, but when the matter was taken before a grand jury the jury did not return a bill charging Merrick Sanders.

The grand jury also changed the charges against Emily Sanders to false pretense.
Ms. Sanders made the news yesterday as she announced on Facebook she purchased Metrocenter for $10 million.

The Secretary of State website states that she and her husband, Merrick, opened Ashley Sanders Seiferth Properties in 2009.  The address for Emily and Merrick Sanders was 818 Main Street in Natchez, the same address stated in the sentencing order.

Ms. Sanders opened a new company on December 31, 2019.  She is listed as the registered agent for Ashley Sanders & Seiferth Holdings, LLC.  Lord Snow attorney Reed Nunnelee organized the corporation.

@2:07 - Per 2:05’s post, it appears that’s just what they did up in Illinois. Got busted and came down to Mississippi and started up again. Most get away with it down here.

The theme of ten's keeps coming up in her life.

In the video, she says "we are about ten days into ownership"
$10M for the purchase of Metrocenter
In the video, she says "we are going to have a state of the art 10,000 sq ft day care center"
10 years sentence for false pretenses
10 years commuted for paying back the victim 10 x $13,000 to the victim.
She lives at 302 Mansfield Drive, the numbers 3,0, and 2 add up to five: half of ten.

Ad valorem taxes for 2019 were $91,647.86. The taxes have been paid on time every year by the previous owner, Jackson Commons, LLC. It will interesting to see what the taxes are next year. There is no sign of Ms. Sanders or Seiferth borrowing money to make the purchase.

I’m shocked —SHOCKED— that an individual who “bought” Metrocenter is anything other than a serious, reputable entrepreneur.

If you google the address listed in the Natchez Democrat, how is an individual living in a $100k house affording to shell out $10 million for investment in a mall?!? Who is backing her?

Yes, but the GARDEN GNOMES displayed atop that stylish waist-high brick wall, ought to be worth SEVERAL Dollars.

Who did everybody expect to invest in a vacant mall in beautiful and prosperous Jackson, Ms ? Warren Buffett ? Bwahahahahahahaha

John said...

She could raise a million or two, promise above-average returns, pay those returns from money collected from new investors, then flee.

That's a pretty good business model, isn't it? I mean...it worked in the timber industry, didn't it?

If the City of Jackson gets in bed with this felon in any way, there will be lawsuits coming out of the municipal wazoo, not to mention the bad press our radical Mayor will have to endure.

3:18 - what's the rest of the Code? Articles 2 and 5 are spot on.

How can I contact her? I would like to buy some timber futures. She seems very nice, sincere, and honest.

I bet she bought it for less than a million then fleeced an investor into putting in two million and sold it from her shell company to the new company. Can anyone verify that it was one transaction and not the two I allege as probable? Million in the pocket and some sap left with a mall?

These craptastic real estate investors out here, always trying to fleece someone. They do not have what it takes to actually do it.

Does anyone remember when Magic Johnson and his investment group considered revitalization of the Metro Center? With $330 million and institutional funds, partial occupancy and a savvy business squad, they said, “Nope”. I wonder how Ms. Sanders plans to do what she proposes. If this is a financial scam, she’s judgment proof (asset is upside down). I doubt she’s the face of a group of investors because felons and shady people look for squeaky clean people to be the face of the group. But, hey, I’ve never had a sandwich from Crust and who knows, the food court may be more crowded than a Chik-fil-A on soccer Saturday! So, drop your kids off at the 10,000 square foot daycare, get in line and jump on the trampoline, come out watch the escalator run, browse around Payless Shoes and when you get your sandwich, go home to your studio apartment!

Anonymous said...

Hahahaha

Anonymous said...

She said she had talked with Payless Shoes and they were anxious to open a store in Metrocenter. I don't think so.

"Payless ShoeSource confirmed Friday that it will close its 2,100 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico and start liquidation sales Sunday. The company is also shuttering its e-commerce operations. The closings mark the biggest by a single chain this year and nearly doubles the number of retail stores set to close in 2019.Feb 15, 2019"

When I saw this story yesterday my immediate reaction was it's a scam; this before I saw who was behind it. Look for bucketloads of Federal $$$$ to be poured into this boondoggle all in the name of saving Jackson!

Very sad that so many people are so naive and they use their faith to justify and excuse her previous behavior.

Predictably, this has become all about racism and sexism. The WLBT Facebook page is overrun with comments like,

"they don't want West Jackson to recover",
"I can’t believe WLBT would stoop this low to discount someone who has done their time and paid their dues for the crime they did 8 years ago",
"It shouldn't matter did she do any Fraudulent against her new investment? Stop trying to tear down this woman Character."

They're looking at her as a savior right now, but once the whole charade collapses, they'll turn on her.

Anonymous said...

@12:07- You'd think they would turn on her, but they'll likely still be screaming racism. (They are only after her 'cause she's black, etc., etc.) I was initially shocked by the blind faith the people commenting on WLBT are putting into this stranger; but, realistically, they are doing it simply because of the color of her skin and not because of her reputation or history, or even their true lack of understanding of economic development. The commenters are chiming in about having a place to shop and eat. Asking for basketball courts and ice rinks, etc. Essentially, they are begging this woman to turn the facility into a haven for delinquents to accumulate and overrun. The loitering is what KILLED the mall in the first place... well, that plus another mall in what was a safer part of town and the slow, painful death of brick and mortar storefronts. Regardless, recreational facilities that will serve as daycares for those up to age 18, will cause this venue to fail, yet again, in an expeditious fashion.

I honestly don't see any LEGITIMATE big-name store or restaurant sitting at the table with this lady. These corporations have legal departments. The combination of her history with Jackson's crime and the condition of area immediately surrounding mall... I just don't see it. Her lack of knowledge about the retail outlets she chose to spout off (Payless?!?) shows her lack of legitimate planning and foresight. Her own video can/will be used against her in her search for legitimate tenants!!!

Many have stated the transaction isn't complete. It makes me wonder if it will actually close. I hope her investors were already aware of her past. If they weren't, are they still investing or have they pulled their funds? Would that action affect the transaction? So many questions...

Anonymous said...

One thing I noticed was that Baby Chock* did not appear on camera with Ms. Sanders. One wonders why the Honorable Mayor did not see fit to take this opportunity and make some high sounding pronouncement that the sale of Metrocenter is an indication that his plans to revitalize South and West Jackson and the Highway 80 Corridor, are coming to fruition? If Baby Chock could not be persuaded to get on board with this project then something must be really wrong.

*P.S. You all do know that the "Baby" Chock reference is to Baby "Doc" Duvalier, right?

Anonymous said...

12:07 Who is "they" that you refer to? Have you ever thought that when it comes to social media comment, the person(s) in question can support themselves and create their own groundswell of support. You never knkow who is actually making comment.

If she brought back the ORIGINAL Widow Watson's, then the mall might be economically viable. That sort of thing is about all anybody's buying in South Jackson, these days (apart from skankynails, wigs, and drugs). And truly, if Mississippi's Legislature can create or condone zones where casinos are legal, then why not REDLIGHT DISTRICTS?

https://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/local/2020/01/27/economic-development-projects-metro-jackson-ms-worth-millions/4422059002/

Less than 5% of that development is happening in Jackson.

Of course, MetroCenter is about to undergo a transformation, thereby including Jackson in these great economic times. LOLOL.

Too bad all of these angry messenger shooters weren't spending their money (however little the amount) at Metrocenter in the first place. Yup, all of Jackson's problems are the fault of someone else ... anyone else ... but especially racists.

So not only do you people hate the fact that we are finally getting something back , that you make it about politics. I’m so SICK OF YOU RACISTS BIGOTED PEOPLE having all the power. Mr. Ramsey. You’re a POS , and I hope you never have to struggle because when you’re watching your city die & all white people can do is laugh at us. We have children to raise. The wording of that headline made me think they were talking about 6 projects which each were worth 700 million. But googling the headline (I don't click on Clarion Ledger) was enough to reveal that this was the TOTAL. Madison's City Center project is being counted (at a strangely-small hundred million). Maybe it's because we've been gone from there for a decade, but to me, "Big Bucks" START at a billion - per project.

700 million, TOTAL, for what are presumably the metro's six biggest projects, is not a figure to brag about.

Anonymous said...

10:23, not bragging. Just citing the C/L story.

If you visit Dallas or Frisco, Texas $700M is a drop in the bucket. There are a dozen buildings going up in Frisco right now that are bigger than the biggest buildings in Jackson.

My point was simply that no one in their right mind wants to invest big bucks in Jackson right now.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
