Inmate Commits Suicide (Updated)

The Mississippi Department of Corrections issued the following statement.

An inmate was found dead by apparent suicide in his one-man cell at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman on Wednesday morning.

The death in Unit 29 appears to be by hanging, according to Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton. The investigation into the death is ongoing, and the cause and the manner are pending confirmation of an autopsy.

Identification of the inmate is pending notification of the next of kin.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections will continue to provide information as soon as it is verified and is committed to providing updates as quickly as possible..

Update (9:30 PM): The inmate found dead by apparent suicide at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman on Wednesday morning is now identified.

Thomas Lee, 49, pleaded guilty to capital murder and was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole on Oct. 20, 2014, in Grenada County Circuit Court for the death of Grenada police Capt. Wayne Haddock. Haddock was struck by a fleeing car on Oct. 7, 2011, while attempting to lay spikes across Mississippi Highway 8 west to stop the car. Lee was a passenger in the car.

MSP officers found Lee, MDOC #193704, in his one-man cell at Unit 29 after 10 a.m. They performed CPR for several minutes before he was pronounced dead at 10:47 a.m.

The county coroner says the cause of death “appears consistent with ligature hanging,” but the official cause and manner of death are pending confirmation by an autopsy and an investigation by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Dang, they are dropping like flies in MS prisons.

Thanks are in order to the inmate. Now the taxpayer is no longer on the hook to sustain his worthless existence.

Enough is enough. That makes 10 inmates who have died in the custody of MDOC since December 29. It's time for the Feds to come in and take control. Obviously this is beyond our state government to resolve.

As if we don't look inept enough on a National/World stage. More sad days ahead with the brass and their IDGAF attitudes towards the pleebs.

Hey, it could be worse.

-The cameras could have malfunctioned during the time of said hanging
-guards been "asleep"
-remaining footage been "accidentally deleted"
-the inmate's hyoid bone could've broken in three places (rare for suicides, more common in strangulation)
-his capillaries could have burst (rare for suicides, more common in strangulation)
-his legs could be pale (rare of suicides, more common in strangulation)
-his cellmate moved from the cell hours before the "hanging"
-the neck wound could've not matched the alleged rope used
-the bed frame could've been too short to pull off the hanging

At least this guy actually killed himself, not like Jeffrey Epstein

Prison reform, Mississippi version.

They can ignore it if they want, but sooner rather than later taxes will have to be raised to fix this starting with increased guard pay.

It’s like the Raymond detention center on a statewide basis. Did he get ‘suicided’? It’s a reasonable question at this point.

Why must taxes be raised? Who do you suggest should pay more?

One more Thug gone🤣🤣🤣

We aint gonna like it when the Feds come in (like they did in Alabama) and this cost us millions more. When the feds are finished our prisons will be nicer than Memaw's nursing home.

Damn...that Parchman thing is working out as planned.

Wait a second. This guy is sentenced for capital murder and serving a life sentence without parole after he was a passenger in a fleeing car that struck a police officer?

It's no great loss folks. I hate to sound like an insensitive bastard, but the inmates up at Parchman are the scum of the earth. This particular inmate took his own life by all accounts, so it's really a win-win for all parties involved, including the taxpayers.

The Democrats scream for prison reform and the release of prisoners early. Well, 10 are no longer in the custody of the State. Geez, you got what you wanted, find something else to complain about.

This is an Gross injustice. Thomas Lee was passenger in the car. How can a judge sentence a person to such injustice? Kingfish your bloggers are the scum of the earth to quote 8:13 AM. Mississippi need to mature & not be the backwoods "I'd go to a hanging with him Hew Haw state!!"

I suspect he was convicted under the felony murder rule, as he should have been. He and his friend killed a cop in the commission of their crime.

If he died of true suicide, oh friggin well, I'm not shedding tears over it.

If he was murdered in prison, that's different.

Want to hear something funny? When all this prison riot stuff started to go down, a source, one I've relied on in the past for law enforcement matters, told me the count was ten. That was when the official count was two. I think its coincidence because the coroner has been pretty forthcoming with information through this ordeal. Still pretty interesting.

Views like 8:13 and 8:30 hold are the very reason why the feds are going to come in. For whatever reasons, state government is unable and/or unwilling to do anything about it, so the feds will come in and do what the state won't do, just as they had to come in during the civil right era. Like it or not, the feds will be here one way or another regarding this, and I can assure you they do not hold the same draconian views that you two hold.

Yes, he was charged under the felony-murder law. His conviction was the result of a guilty plea, no doubt to avoid the death penalty. I seriously doubt this was his first rodeo with law enforcement.

6:36 the folks who want them locked up will to pay.

8:13 here, and yes 9:09, I would go to a public hanging. If that method of punishment was still used in this state & country, we wouldn't be in the current state of crime, over-crowded prisons, etc. that we find ourselves here in 2020. As 'draconian' as that may seem, it would be a REAL deterrent to crime and lawlessness. Call me and others that feel the same way whatever you want, I really don't give a flying fuck.

A person with, at best, dubious judgment (as evidenced by his being both factually and legally guilty of playing a role in the death of a LEO) in a pretty much "end of the road" situation (life in Parchman) who makes the decision to commit suicide isn't really "a crisis" or even anecdotal evidence of one.

I guess the other 9 people who have died doesn't count as anecdotal evidence of a crisis either.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
