Another inmate was murdered at Parchman this morning. The Clarion-Ledger just reported:
Inmates have been contacting media including the Clarion Ledger, sending photos and videos and claiming violence is unchecked and smoke from fires has been making it hard to breathe. Mississippi Department of Corrections officials have mostly been mum, providing little information since putting the state prison system on "lockdown" Sunday after an inmate was killed in a South Mississippi prison....It was the third death at Parchman since New Year's Day, and the fifth killing at all Mississippi state prisons in less than a week. ...Rest of article.
The Kingfish got a tip Wednesday that there were ten deaths. There was only one reported death at the time. Now we are up to five. Let's see if the unconfirmed tip winds up being true.
Meanwhile, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AT MDOC? Why isn't our Commissioner being straight with us? Where the hell is her boss? Has Phil already checked out or does he remember he is still on the clock? Inquiring minds want to know.
Update (3:10 PM): Commissioner Pelecia Hall issued the following statement.
–A lockdown of state, private, and regional facilities will continue until further notice as the Mississippi Department of Corrections continues to investigate the most recent violence in the prison system.
“We
are continuing to be vigilant and mindful of the situation,”
Commissioner Pelicia E. Hall said. “These are trying times for
the Mississippi Department of Corrections. It is never a good feeling
for a commissioner to receive a call that a life has been lost,
especially over senseless acts of violence.”
Four
inmates have died and several have been injured at two state prisons
and one regional during major disturbances since Sunday.
One death occurred at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution,
(SMCI) in Leakesville, two at the Mississippi State Penitentiary (MSP)
at Parchman, and one at the Chickasaw County Regional Correctional
Facility (CCRF) in Houston, Miss.
MDOC investigators have determined a fifth death and a minor fire, both at MSP, are unrelated to the major disturbances.
Commissioner
Hall said investigators have been working tirelessly and aggressively
pursuing leads to determine what sparked the
violence. The department has confirmed that some of the major
disturbances are gang-related. The identities of the gangs or security
threat groups will not be released to the public for security purposes.
“There
is a lot of misinformation fanning the flames of fear in the community
at large, especially on social media,” Commissioner
Hall said. “Cellphones are contraband and have been instrumental in
escalating the violence.”
“I
understand the public’s right and need to know,” Commissioner Hall
continued. “But my department will not rush to release information
for the sake of perpetuating rumors. Contrary to what is being said, we
are providing information. There is a process to releasing accurate
information and that takes time.”
All
movement at the three state prisons, three privately managed prisons,
and 15 regional facilities is limited to emergencies only.
Open bay housing units continue to be a challenge to manage at all
facilities because inmates are not secured in single cells.
“The MDOC, private prison operators and sheriffs of the regionals are working together to make sure that facilities are as safe
as possible because of the different housing structures,” Commissioner Hall said. “Not everyone is locked in a cell.”
In
addition to the lockdown and with the help of local and state law
enforcement, the department also has moved inmates at MSP to
more secure housing units on prison grounds to contain the violence.
As
investigations continue, once the identities of aggressors are known,
the department will pursue criminal charges and any other
available remedies to the full extent of the law, Commissioner Hall
said.

Phil is too busy meeting with contributors in preparation for running for a higher office. He is what is called a "short-timer" in the military.
The Republican brass know they have no one to hold them accountable. They are untouchable and they act like it. Hell, most of the commenters here are probably happy there are a few less inmates living today than last week.
I care about this story as much as I do PERS and Sid Salter op-ed's.
Run thank Fisher. Pelicia was molded at his feet. This is all by design. They had no business ever BEING in a position of power. I hope everyone sees it now. This is what we desperately tried to get out years ago. No one would listen. The prisons lacked leadership and the capability to detain its inmates. Pelicia thought that Convict on their shirt was cruel. Wanted it changed. If a CO WANTED change and saw what was needed. He or she was immediate fired. You do not buck status quo of Fisher or Pelicia. You just didn’t. We begged for the legislature to listen to us and the people hear our cries. It feel on deaf hears. Now sadly there has been 5 deaths and we are finally being heard. Fisher got rid of anyone he could that ever crossed him. He taught Pelicia the same. They ran cover for each other and left DPS DOC so short staffed they literally have 62 yr old women watching an entire male pod. Poor lady had to work for insurance. No wonder it’s a war zone.
Better yet, where is our new dear leader Tater on this issue? I know they have newspapers at Primo's, he should be well aware.
And this will be Phil’s legacy. What else is worthy of remembering? Except maybe his absurd comment about having full faith in big pharma.
Republican leadership top to bottom. You thought it was a good thing, but now there is no one to blame but yourselves. Enjoy!
I assume Republican leadership is hoping this will blow over, or worst case hoping that no one cares because they're "just prisoners, after all."
@12:48
Right you are. It is like the problem solving itself. It is why I couldn't care less how many thugs shoot each other in Jackson. They will never bother me in my gated Flowood community.
Amazing that no one is calling out State leadership for this but If something happens in Jackson...
Pitt, I'm sure Pelicia Hall's party affiliation is Republican....right?
What's the surprise? Bryant has been a topwater position-holder for eight years. No ability to run deep. He's fine as long as he can free-wheel with his 140 word sentences about his successes. He's comfortable making appointments and being driven up and down the interstate doing 88 mph behind black windows.
Bryant's legacy is Cindy Smith, turning JPS over to the mayor of Jackson and appointing a 10-gallon hat preacher to lead our Ag/Commerce Department. Otherwise, he's done nothing for eight years other than piss up my leg.
Trump recognized Bryant as a buffoon early on and couldn't distance himself fast enough, although, on a regular basis we hear Phil brag about how he has the president's ear and can walk right into the oval office carrying a large, super-loaded pizza any day of the week.
5......4......3....2....1 DOJ and Federal court orders coming.....
This is a rather unorthodox Way of handling prison overcrowding?
Last I saw Philbilly he was helping the guys with Two Men and A Truck load stuff at the mansion.
Last I heard, Phil was at Boots and Britches trying on some new kicks.
I never did like Phil. I could always see through him. Barbour? Well, let’s just say HE controls Missippi pretty much by himself. Tater? Well, just waiting for Haley to give him his orders. Yes we have a crime problem. Much is brought on by drugs and crimes associated with drugs. We are a drug addicted nation. The communist world is loving it and laughing about it. Meanwhile our masses get dumber because we let a dept of education let the districts get too heavy and didn’t invest in Vo/Tech training. Gotta keep that loan mill ginning with the government to keep the colleges and universities fed so THEIR overstuffed institutions can exist. Kept on telling our kids you need to go to college to be someone and we dug a hike we couldn’t get out of by dumbing down our state. WAY TO GO! Run that ball boy!!
" but If something happens in Jackson..."
Well 2:29, I think the body count over the same time period between Jackson and the prisons is about about equal.
I am all for hard time in jail. However, it is the states responsibility to keep prisoners safe. Not babied or pampered but safe. Failure to do this makes the state an accessory to murder.
If you think Philbilly was a do-nothing governor, you can expect Lil Tater will be more of the same for 8 years.
It would not have been the worst thing in the world to have had an incoming Governor who had served most of his career as attorney general and district attorney.
Guess what 5:04! Tate Reeves won. Jim Hood lost! Donald Trump is still President. Get over it.
For every action there’s a reaction. We are too soft on crime and criminals!
The problem, officers bringing in contraband. The Correctional Officers are making a statement, using the inmates as a means to bring about change by giving them the tools(Contraband) to create chaos.
Look at the big picture, the inmates started the fires, killed their fellow inmates and tore up the place all with the help of a few sorry ass weak officers!
The smoke, blood and gore play by play is all over Facebook!
January 3, 2020 at 12:54 PM "I care about this story as much as I do PERS and Sid Salter op-ed's."
Are you really that insensitive and stupid??????? Dear GOD. People are being slaughtered.
She has a talent for "spin." Tell us how those cellphones get inside...they are brought in by your staff.
Pelicia, please...stop breakin' down.
At first I thought we were talking about the Raymond detention center. But this is worser. Much worser. Maybe Victor could step in and do better. Or Dan Akroyd
Heavy LE presence at the State Penitentiary! I hope feeling cute Trooper gets the call to go! Maybe she can post where am I from inside the walls. Would be very cute then. Her little games don’t work out here in the real world.
Pelicia I’ve seen soccer team captains with more leadership ability than you and your man Fisher
" Better yet, where is our new dear leader Tater on this issue? "
I suspect he'll address it better than Hood and Waller Jr. would.
"Hell, most of the commenters here are probably happy there are a few less inmates living today than last week."
Yep.
Let the gangs kill each other.
It's much cheaper than than years of appeals and eventual lethal injection.
Until then, President Trump is preparing to eliminate even more terrorists.
I can't think of better way to make liberal heads explode.
Mrs. Hall ask these people to lay off you for a bit. All you wanted from Ms taxpayers was to give you one million dollars to buy new inmate clothing! Convict was way too cruel for them to wear across the backs of their shirts. You were dealing with some real issues. Hahahaha you big JOKE!!
Hate or love him, but you gotta respect him...there are many people who have missed Chris Epps at MDOC. Half of the COs have left during Hall's tenure?! How does one enter an already broken system and reduce it to sawdust? Amazing!
9:08 pm.
Well feeling cute might stop a prison riot later I’m not sure. Well that shit goes out the window behind the wire. She can just refuse to go or your superior want allow her too. “Protect her” they know she isn’t capable.
Pelicia... you big JOKE!!! Glad you have left us!! Happy New Year Warden
The entire Squad said it was coming. You consistently denied it. You trusted CON-VICTS! See. Do you seeeeeee now!!! Can’t trust them
Kingfish how do I get info to you on this ?
People are asking out of jail before noon today, riding four-wheelers, borrowing trucks, just another day in paradise
Hahahahahaha yes get feeling cute! A real road dawg!!! RED LEG
Kingfish1935@gmail.com
If you can't protect the inmates in your care then you are an accessory to murder. Plain and simple.
To the opening poster: Pray tell what 'higher office' Bryant could possibly seek. All he's hoped for is a presidential appointment with lots of flight-time. But, that ain't happenin'. His only real hope is that Tater will put him over in the Game and Fish building.
0110 hrs
Thank you! Exactly right
Sometimes when an organization is having problems they ask the people where the problems are occurring what they think. Whoever comes into the mess at DOC would be wise to sit down with a few guards and even some ex-convicts and find out what's really happening where the rubber meets the road.
Where are the Troopers? Bring them in to an understaffed facility and have them walk your dorms. There are plenty Troopers. Some 500 plus. Stop the damn killing.

That’s leadership 101! Listen to the people under you and use your resources. You have many reformed inmates. Even if Pelicia wanted to she couldn’t. Fisher wouldn’t let her. Remember he appointed her. He told Phil she was the ONE. THESE PEOPLE ARE MORE CORRUPT THAN WHATS BEHIND THE DAMN WALLS! Look at Dowdy. Anyone else is arrested. He is still the director having others arrested. It’s Ms.
Never ask a clutched-rabbit what he's got against being thrown into a briar patch.
It’s a matter of time before they over run guards and the prisoners are in our communities. Then where is your Public Safety
Like every other state agency, MDOC is under funded and under staffed. That will not change under Tater, who once again will cut taxes to benefit his rich supporters.
Just read on WLBT web site about how Investigators are admitting that the VL and GD are at war. " Informants are telling MAGI investigators that there have been guards who gave keys to inmates which allowed them to get to other inmates they wanted to attack. They said the fight started with the Vice Lords and the Gangster Disciples started to retaliate". Also read in the article informants telling MAGI about guards assisting by giving keys to inmates (apparently no vetting). Then we have two escaping during a lockdown. System is totally busted.
The voters of the state decided to continue with a policy of governmental starvation championed by Phil and to be expanded by Tater. It's alright as long as no one actually starves to death, like the college board determined to starve any institution dependent on state funding, but the one exception is the penal system where someone really can STARVE TO DEATH. The federal government will step in and show that even the republican justice department will not sit still while these nuts cut even the bare essentials to satisfy the dreams of some "no gov'ment spending" Rankin County rednecks.
Mass prison break in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... LOCK AND LOAD! No bag limit.
"but the one exception is the penal system where someone really can STARVE TO DEATH. "
I read several recent stories about deaths of prisoners in custody but I can't remember any one of them dying of starvation. Please post a link.
where are the elected and appointed officials. Not one word spoke! Fisher is laughing and Pelicia is calling him asking for advise. This was on going before they left. No coincidence that the day of their resignation this all happened. It had been unfolding. They fired good guards. Hired all the females so they would be nice to inmates and pass out keys and control the units. They made sure of it. So thanks to you both and yes. Don’t forget ole Phil!!!
I guess there are consequences for giving all those tax breaks to shopping malls and car dealers. Who would have thought it would take money to run an effective prison system?
The name of the gangs or word gang period should not be mentioned in any news outlet article. Really!! This just gives theses idiots more power and press and street creed.
Oh, I forgot the big picture! Give them all the press so they can eliminate each other, then MDOC can try to take control.
People our leaders are smart, they know what they are doing, most of this shigity is by design. (Let’s stop the name calling)
Don’t get your blood pressure too high on this farce, let’s spend our energy and taxpayer dollars on the ones who want to succeed! And not on these damn criminals!!!
12:42 ***Correction*** In this case "starving" is a metaphor for underfunding. The penal system is the only one where severe underfunding can directly result in deaths. Others might only indirectly result in death. Thank you.
To 1:23 p.m., Is the you, Tate? Refusing to acknowledge a problem is never a solution. Gangs are a problem, not just in prison, but in society.
12:52...Fisher is neither an elected official nor in the D.O.C. chain of command.
Many things went on during Epps' watch, but nothing like this. It is only going to get worse.
Roads, bridges, schools, prisons, health care, etc. are all declining to 3d world status in Mississippi but ain't we proud the taxes on corporations was cut and the anti illegal immigrant legislation was tossed in the can.
Maybe Texas can assist MS officials in setting a much Higher Bar for what is & is not acceptable. After seeing Warden in Dentist Kendra Hatcher trial talk about safety measures in Texas state prison & signs posted with no hostages allowed past this point sends a powerful MESSAGE!
