22 is old enough to know better. Now he’ll have this come up on every background check when he applies for jobs. Stupid stupid stupid.
And we here in SEC country put so much value on our kids having the 'college experience'. I know it can and does happen in every college town around the country, but it just seems like the SEC has more than its fair share of episodes like this.
With the exception of Vanderbilt and A&M these schools place far too much importance on athletics. Reality is we should get back to placing priorities on academics rather than sports. College is suppose to be amateur athletics and stats show less that 2% of NCAA athletes go pro in a sport. Sunday is for the pros. Focus on academics. The return will be far greater.
Now they need to arrest the black kid that knocked the boy just standing there out with a blindsided cheap shot.
A&M hired Jimbo Fisher with a 10 year $75 mil contract AFTER all the crap he pulled at FSU. Yeah, they don't put a lot of importance on athletics.
Vandy would care more if their top tier baseball program's stadium would sell more than 2500 tickets for home games.
We don't know that this guy is even a student. He's 22. I remember when people graduated at 20 or 21.
A perfect example of too damn many people going to college. In the infamous words of Judge Smells "the world needs ditchdiggers too."

"Vandy would care more if their top tier baseball program's stadium would sell more than 2500 tickets for home games"
Yes! It would also help if they had air conditioned restrooms! I attended the Super Regional at Vandy last year. That whole experience was horrible. The restrooms and concession area for the outfield are in the basketball arena. It questioned some Vandy folks if the air conditioning was broker or turned off for the summer. They informed me that the area is not air conditioned. Dudy Noble in the 70's and 80's was better than the Vandy experience.
@10:37
It's like the ole saying in Tennessee goes. What do all University of Tennessee grads have in common? They all end up working for a Candy grad. I live in Jackson and went to Rice in Houston TX. I did a case on a high school football player last yr from a local public school and he asked me why I went to Rice they have a horrible football program.? I didn't know what to say. I guess lower income less educated people really base education on athletic programs or facilities in the athletic program as this guy complaini g about the A/C at vandy baseball. Truth is majority of there student base could give a flip and are there for a education. This is unreal I'm having to tell someone this.
I wonder if state baseball fans would trade air conditioned bathrooms for one .... just one .... national title.
@11:00
I would trade A/C at MSU for a Vandy degree rather than a miss state southern or ole miss degree.
Grandson of former MHP Col. D.D. Cvitanovich? That's definitely a way to tarnish a family name.
September 10, 2019 at 8:59 AM, have you looked at what's going on in the Pacific Northwest, in California, in the Northeast?? It's a lot worse than here in the SEC.
Wasn't Texas A&M the school that pioneered allowing college athletes to attend their classes online? I believe that started as an accommodation to Johnny Manzel.
The Columbus Dispatch has a higher-resolution video, and this slope-shouldered son-of-a-bitch was throwing most of the punches. Screaming like a banshee and totally out of control. Looks pretty cocky in his mugshot, too.
Typical drunken Slav behavior. Nearly as bad as the Irish.
@10:58...
I agree 100%.
I pull for USM in athletics because my parents went there and we (as a family) have had season tickets for 40+ years. I practically grew up there. However, when it came to education, I chose to go undergrad at a school that doesn't have much athletic tradition but has a much better academic reputation and 3x's the academic endowment than all 3 MS schools combined. Education > Athletics. SEC mentality is brutal.
I laugh everytime I hear a kid say they are going to school somewhere because "they like the sports team". One can "like" a sports team and still get an education at another (usually better) institution.
Me thinks this spry, 22 year-old junior (as described in the Columbus Dispatch), may have had something else in his system besides a few beers. At least no one pulled a gun...
The black kid with the blond dreadlocks on the top of his head needs to be charged for sucker-punching one guy and dragging another off by his ankle - not sure what happened to that one. It shouldn't be too hard to ID him with that hair.
Is he really 6"3"? He's gonna hurt somebody real bad if he doesn't get a grip.
In my day everyone was too drunk to land a punch in a bar fight before the bouncers broke it up.
Love playing wack-a-mole with the busses and redlights and whatnot every time I want to comment on JJ.
@ 11:26
That's what I was wondering, as well. I'm sure his family is so proud, if so.
@2:31, you made me laugh out loud.
I'm sorry folks but I can't get too worked up about this. I don't know when "we" humans got so civilized. This kind of thuggish, tribalistic ("State is too better than Ole Miss") behavior has been going on since time immemorial. It certainly happened when I was a kid (I am 75 years old). Some young bucks were worse than others. One pal of mine suffered a lacerated temporal artery from a broken bottle -- the old "if we'd have stopped for a train he would have died." It happens everywhere in all times. This is where the reservoir of young warriors comes from when our trade wars devolve into shooting wars. The largest age cohort on the Vietnam Wall is 19. That's what testosterone is all about. I got into an awful fist fight at an alcohol fueled house party over -- get this -- Lyndon Johnson. Tell you what else -- I know this is a different piece -- while I personally am opposed to cross-burning, the KKK, Xenophobia (I'm a first generation American of a religion whose adherents are not allowed to join the KKK) and can recall being called a ______ (my ethnicity) N-word in high school I think burning a cross is political speech. Sorry. So is painting swastikas or waving the stars and bars. Thank God I am almost dead because I can't stand too much more civilization.
"I live in Jackson and went to Rice "
Well I'm impressed !
I'm also reminded of the old non PC Cheer.
What comes out of a Chinaman's ass ?
RICE! RICE! RICE!
He is not a student.
Is that a church?
And what did the little skinny guy do to deserve a sucker punch like that?
Reminds me of the JJ video a while back where the men kept arguing and then hitting women.
Yeah, I bet he wishes his name was Smith.
He is lucky nobody fell wrong and died from hitting concrete.
The obvious question....which fraternity?
The article said it was the Catholic church and the guy is a junior.
I have yet to read what the fight was about. Most likely it was about drunk college students.
SPD went and picked up Mr. Husser today.
SEC, SEC, SEC....
It just means more!!!
I am impressed by his skills. Did you see the carnage he instilled by simply using his bare hands? When he gets out, he needs to put his gift to good use, like the Marines, Kung Fu, Space Force, etc.
Uncle Sam just found one more good man.
The fight was over some of the frat boys making disparaging comments to some girls that were with the boys from the Coast. The frat rats ganged up on one of the coast boys and then the calvary showed up....All we are seeing is the effect, not the cause...keep that in mind!
I would like to offer some insight into the unfortunate fight in the Starkville Cotton District that is being discussed. Shortly after midnight, two young men were carrying a female friend to a nearby location to catch a cab because she was very intoxicated and they were concerned about her well being. A female friend was walking with them also. On the way to catch the cab, the two young men and the girls were confronted by a group of guys that started yelling derogatory words towards the girls like “whore” and” slut”. At the same time, they were also harassing the two guys helping, with statements including “I guess y’all are gonna rape 'em". That one produced plenty of laughs in the group. The young man that was carrying the inebriated young lady told the guys to “shut their mouths”. At that point, the group of guys doing the harassing started to approach closer to them. Fearing the larger group was going to assault them and/or the young ladies, the two guys sat the girls down on the curb in front of a church. One of the guys stayed with the girls while the other went for help from The Drifters Bar, where they had just left from. While alone, the remaining young man found himself and the girls being approached and surrounded in an aggressive manner by the 4-5 guys. He was then punched in the face by one of the aggressors and did all he could to protect himself and the young ladies. All of the above occurred PRIOR TO cell phone video being taken. By that time, the guy who left to get help was headed back with two additional males. They saw what was going on, and came to the aid of the group being assaulted. (Video starts now) The guys laying out on the ground in the video were part of the initial group who started the confrontation. It was later learned that the bullies are associated with a Fraternity. Apparently, the repercussions of their unprovoked and unacceptable aggression were a bit more harsh than their Fraternity initiations and late night slap fights. Thankfully, the young women were helped to someone’s car uninjured by the large group. At this point, the situation was calming down, however, while the two guys who were initially helping the girls were talking with a non-bully bystander, two guys from the originally aggressive group, later identified as Stephen Jernigan II and Harrison Porter, each sucker punched the two guys who were originally assisting the two girls. As you can see in the video, that also didn’t work out to well for the bullies. Porter was dealt with and Jernigan went to sleep on the sidewalk. I know the video makes it look like Jernigan was sucker punched and that is absolutely not the case. If you slow the video down, you can see Jernigan accosting an African American young man, then Jernigan was pushed or hit with a jab, fell on his butt, got back up, and was then knocked unconscious. Better keep those hands up next time, Jernigan. I hope that the Fraternity doesn’t sanction this type sexual harassment, disregard for a female’s safety, or plain stupidity. Kingfish, I’m not trying to justify this kind of craziness, but would like for your readers to have all of the facts. If that were my daughter, I would be comforted to know that there are still young men out there who would defend her like that.(I and her mother would have conversations with her later about her behavior.) Looks like the Starkville Police have had a chance to visit with Jernigan and Porter about the events of that night...the ones they recall prior to nap time. And looks like this wasn't the first time Porter was accused of physically assaulting someone.

This is beginning to sound like a situation where the police arrest everyone involved and let the lawyers sort it out. I'll not suggest that it is the best way in a perfect world, but since this is not a perfect world, it certainly keeps down the chances of the police being accused of favoritism, etc. Plus, it allows the police to avoid spending valuable time and resources investigating a clusterfuck in which many folks (on any "side") will not be forthcoming with facts, outright lie to them, or simply be very poor witnesses. I know this will mostly fall on deaf ears, but maybe wait until more is known before rushing to judge anyone or anything.
Looks like almost all of the video has been taken down. If you live there, then you know this is just normal behavior for that area...and the Starkville Police aren't going to do anything that MSU doesnt approve of...adter all, it's MSU Football.
