Ag Commish Andy Gipson issued the following statement.
The Mississippi Hemp Cultivation Task Force will convene Wednesday, September 25, at 10:00 a.m. in Room 113 of the Mississippi State Capitol for its second meeting. The meeting will be open to the public.
The Task Force, chaired by Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson, was established by the Mississippi Legislature to consider the potential of hemp cultivation, market potential and potential job creation in Mississippi. The Task Force formed four committees to research the various areas of hemp production during its initial meeting in July: Regulations and Monitoring; Economics, Marketing and Job Creation; Hemp Agronomy; and Law Enforcement. During this upcoming meeting, Task Force members from each of the four committees will give updates on their respective subject areas.
“Our present focus is to examine all of the issues surrounding the cultivation of hemp in the state. We are committed to keeping the interests of Mississippians, including farmers, law enforcement and other stakeholders, as well as the general public, at the center of our mission,” said Commissioner Gipson.
The meeting, which is open to the public, can also be viewed through livestreaming on the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce’s Facebook page. The public can submit comments by emailing MSHempTaskForce@mdac. ms.gov.
Kingfish note: Just couldn't resist.

They were growing hemp on the research farm (north farm) at MSU 15 years ago and at that time said it would be an excellent crop for farmers in Mississippi.
Sad lack of action by the state.
Oh. I'm sorry, the report here says we now have a hemp action committee.
My bad.
Before that, ZeroPolo, former Commissioner JBR led many delta farmers into the land of milk and honey of hemp cultivation in the early 90's, only to lose their arse just like they did when they followed Jim Buck's promotion of Emu farming as a pyramid scheme (raise breeding pairs, he said, and sell the eggs to other schmucks for tens of thousands each.) After a few years of feeding these birds and cooking the oil, many turned them loose on the roads - I guess to eat the hemp that the Commish had moved to.
Hopefully, this time our movement into hemp production will be better thought out; but considering how much thought Jim Buck gave to anything other than his own promotion, that wouldn't take much.
Remember the "Hemp Lady" that ran for Mayor of Jackson. She was trying to tell everyone what a cash crop it would be. Do tell....
Heard John Dowdy on the radio saying that state law enforcement would oppose this because it looks like marijuana. What a dumb, backwards, small-minded objection. Farmers in Tennessee are growing this now, looks like we will be last in this too thanks to “leaders” like Dowdy. Hope Tate cans this guy when he wins.
No one wants weed grown in Mississippi, it's too weak.
After McConnell and Pelosi passed the legislation to make hemp legal and Trump signed it Mississippi should have jumped at the chance to get Mississippi farmers up and running. Instead we have a "study" group while the other 49 states are actually growing it. I will be voting for Rickey Cole.
Not just that, John Dowdy said if the medical marijuana referendum passed, he is confident that the legislature will ignore it and not make medical marijuana available.
Curious what Tate will do given he always says about the will of the voters on the flag issue.
I heard that same radio program (JT show) with Dowdy. Everything he said was 'his personal opinion'. He hangs his hat, and his 'legal objection', on the fact that he personally is opposed to it. Who gives a shit what his personal feelings are?
Eventually this is going to be legal everywhere. Never understood why it can be grown at an Institute of Higher Learning but not on farms. The LE objection is a case of stupid, which is a crop we need to do away with.
I don't care either way. But no matter what they decide, I hope a law is passed to make Gibson take off that goofy "Cowboy" Hat.
Is the committee going to share a bong?
If you thought it was dangerous dodging the deer before, wait until some stoned whitetail tries to flag a ride.
The only reason Phil appointed Gipson Ag Commissioner was to get him out of the House. The Speaker and a good number of members wanted him gone. They were getting sick and tired with his "new gun" laws and anti vaccine stance! And instead of learning more about the Ag department, he's been going around the state with his white hat on. He even wears it inside when he tours the state. Andy Gipson is no more a farmer than Tate Reeves is one!
Imagine growing up in the middle of nowhere, watching nothing but westerns.
Your heroes are John Wayne, the Lone Ranger, and Andy Griffith.
Oh, the psychological power of being one of those men! Wearing your white cattleman cowboy hat. Pulling up those lovely ostrich cowboy boots with the fancy quarter stitching and spur ridge. Galloping on your steed with the Smith and Wesson six shooter on your side.
Such a power changes a man... his appearance... his voice...
Unparalleled is such might! Do not cross the Sheriff, and dare not break the law, for the wrath of the Department of Agriculture shall strike down those who wish to grow hemp. Or sell eggs. Or buy corn.
Hopefully, the Commissioner has now figured out that hemp and marijuana plants are in fact different as he didn't understand the difference in a Supertalk interview shortly after being appointed.
How have 46 states figured this out, but we can't? https://www.mspolicy.org/mississippi-only-state-in-the-south-where-hemp-is-illegal/
What ever happened to the Mississippi LAND WATER AND TIMBER FUND? It was the i n n o v a t i v e slush fund of Lester Spell's that partially funded the beef plant debacle. Is ole A N D Y making and grants these days from that fund?
I can support medical marijuana use, but the industry should be heavily regulated with a doctor's prescription required to avoid random recreational use. And all of you are aware that CBD oil from the hemp plant does not contain THC or get you high? Though this process also should be heavily controlled so that THC and fillers and toxins do not make it into the product. These shops will pop up just like the vape shops, and we see where that is going.
2:04 PM It will be legal for recreational use in nearly every state soon. Mississippi should go ahead and join the rest of the nation.
