Will Jim Barksdale be the next Chancellor at Ole Miss? The Daily Mississippian reported today:
Jim Barksdale has quietly applied to be the next chancellor, according to three sources familiar with the search process.Hmmm.... does he have a website? Was he in Congress? If not, his chances are probably doomed.
Barksdale is the chairman of the board and president of Barksdale Management Corporation, which manages philanthropic activities. He served as the president and CEO of Netscape Communications Corporation from 1994-1999.... Article

Barksdale could buy Gibbert 100 times over. Not to mention Barksdale ran companies larger than Ole Miss (FedEx, McCaw, Netscape)...as opposed to a local technology reseller.
Not saying he'll get it, but he'll get it before Gibbert. He could also promise a couple hundred million to the school and never miss it.
His main knock is he is 75 years old. And not a young looking 75.
He'll just be another chancellor in a long line of liberals wanting to change everything. Guarantee he wants to change the state flag, move the confederate monuments and let black people vote.
In my opinion Mr. Barksdale is the greatest living Mississippian. He has the wonderful gift of putting money where his mouth is. Pretty unusual.
But like Dan Jones he might just be too smart for the job. People don't like that in an educator.
Another libo.
What's a Netscape? How is some obscure primitive 90s technology even relevent today? As useful as a floppy disk.
But Ronnie has said he wants the job. It is his lifelong dream. Please give it to Ronnie.
Jim is a very talented and generous person, but no way he becomes Chancellor.
Rumor has it Chip Pickering is in the hunt. If that's so, they may as well bring back Freeze.
I am hearing Philip Gunn is in the hunt...
Here is a novel idea, let's name a Chancellor who works in the business of teaching and at least education.
Barksdale recently sold Cadillac biz.
"But like Dan Jones he might just be too smart for the job."
That right there is funny. I answered to Dan Jones, and he's as dumb as a box of rocks. He just doesn't know it.
OTOH that might be smart enough for Ol' Miss.
4:24, might as well throw out Alexander Graham Bell and Henry Ford as relevant also. WTF modern technology company are you running?
4:24, ever heard of FedEx? They became great when Barksdale was COO. Ever heard of AT&T wireless? The billion he made on Netscape was gravy on an outstanding career, but I’m sure the extra billion he made was nice.
Now this is more like it. I’d like him, or Ed Meek to be chancellor.
Netscape (and the people who started it) literally created the technology you’re typing your shitty comment on.
So, yeah, pretty relevant.
I’am still for Kennuf stoke!
4:24 AM made one of the dumbest comments I've seen on here in a while.
He would be awesome.
Why don't y'all just give it to Archie and be done with it.
Personally, I think Ole Miss needs someone other than a stuffed-shirt-politician type who can't relate to people and/or does not engender trust. For that matter, I think we can all do without the IHL.
The last time a Barksdale led people from Ole Miss, a contingent of their soldier students were wiped out in Gettysburg.
If Chip Pickering is on the list he's being pushed by Phil or Haley or the Creekmores who own C-Spire. Ole Miss would be the laughingstock of America if he were named.
Go look at who donates and props up "Mississippi Today". Jim Barksdale is very prominent along with The Creekmore Family. Oh and Archie Manning and his wife.
1. Mississippi Today is not nonpartisan
2. They lost $1 million in 2017
3. 2018 990 not released yet
4. They don't post financials on the website which is a no-no for any good nonprofit
5. Jim Barksdale rents MS Today their office space and has another related business transaction disclosure on 990
6. Very little interaction on their Facebook page
7. Are not relevant in the Mississippi narrative
8. I feel bad for Marshal Ramsey
In closing, Jim Barksdale would make a horrible Chancellor, just like his ruse of a nonpartisan news source.
Probably not of interest to many on here but Barksdale as chairman of the Mayo Clinic Board led $3.7 billion capital campaign. So might have some connections. But Like I say, small potatoes for you folks and probably not what Ole Miss needs.
Mississippi Development Authority Director was a job he held in 2012 and he did very little. He could not even run a meeting and His better days were behind him 7 years ago. The guy is an old 77.
Ole Miss needs more from a chancellor than dollar signs.
I think that's great. But really, Mayo Clinic and a stacked emeritus board of trustees with the likes of Dick Chaney, Tom Brokaw, Sem Daschle, Marriott, and Walter Mondale, it wasn't a heavy lift.
There is no doubt Jim's done great things and been good to MS and Ole Miss, but the new Chancellor needs to be someone that will be 100% committed and south of the age of 65.
Why do you feel sorry for Marshall Ramsey?Have you looked at his politics lately? He's moved so far left he fits right in with Mississippi Today. Openly supported Hillary in 2016.
Jim Barksdale should spend the remainder of his years schmoozing with the likes of the Deep South's Deep State up there at the House of Faulkner in Charlottsville, lest he be called upon to apologize for his role in the destruction of Iraq and the deaths of millions of non-combatants, including the UN Sanctions-related deaths of(650,00) Iraqi infants and toddlers during the years of combat and occupation.
Yes, we know of the year 2000 $100,000,000 gift to upgrade the reading skills of Mississippi school children. We also know of Barksdale's role in electing George W. Bush to the Presidency through his association with the then Texas Governor George W. Bush Information Technology Advisory Committee.
Barksdale was rewarded with an appointment to the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board(PFIAB). From there in 2002 he joined with Philip Zelikow--former executive Director of the 911 Commission investigation-- in the conspiracy to make the case for invasion and occupation based upon the WMD lies and disinformation to launch the terror bombing of Iraq's cities and civilian population in 2003. Shock and Awe was a war crime defined by the protocols of the Geneva Conventions.
Just to be clear about the Mayo deal: so Barksdale was chair of an organization w Cheney, Brokaw et al. That’s pretty good, right?
What's a Netscape? How is some obscure primitive 90s technology even relevent today? As useful as a floppy disk.
Masterful trolling.
Does Ole Miss need a politician, businessmen, or educator?
Why does OM have a "one of us" attitude towards their next Chancellor?
When old businessmen and washed up politicians start getting their name thrown around the fire... RUN! I'd take an outsider that knows how to run a university over a hand grown good ole boy any day of the week.
Ya' ain't from around here are ya' 2:05? Keep that "Unknown" opinion to yourself.
"Probably not of interest to many on here but Barksdale as chairman of the Mayo Clinic Board led $3.7 billion capital campaign. So might have some connections. But Like I say, small potatoes for you folks and probably not what Ole Miss needs. "
People around the world are happy and eager to donate to the Mayo Clinic, regardless of who is leading the fund-raising campaign.
Ole Miss, not so much ;-)
