Polling is a tough process in today's environment, primarily due to cell phones along with caller ID.

Also, this is nine months out from the election, with the primary for both stuck in between. If the dem candidate can get enough traction that Hood has to come out and speak to some issues, he is going to lose either some of his Dem support or his Independent support come November.

Don't know that Waller's entry will do the same thing to Reeves - his position has been pretty well stated over the years and he doesn't have to change it for the primary.

Regardless of the validity of polling today, I would much rather see and operate on the results from OnMessage than Mason Dixon, considering their results over the past few cycles in Mississippi.

On Message is one of the biggest polling firms in DC. If you think they’re going to put out a poll that is complete BS, you have no idea how any of this works. They’d lose their reputation and cease to be able to get clients.

See, this is real data and it won’t go away. It would be used against them by their competitors and they know that. Therefore, big DC firms don’t put out BS numbers - they know it’d come back to haunt them later on.

In this day and age anyone who answers the phone for a pollster is a fool. If you actually tell them who you are voting for you are a damn fool.

I don't know Tate but my polling suggests that a lot of people just don't hold him in high regard. Don't know why exactly. Maybe money and his political machine can overcome that. It didn't for Hillary but Mississippians seem to vote for the idiot/thief/whatever they know vs the ones they don't know.

There are groups in Mississippi in which Tate polls very well. Unfortunately for him, they are dying out by the day as fast as there are people putting up their black face make-up and confederate do-rags. But no doubt, there are still plenty of them still out there.

I always vote a straight GOP ticket. My parents, husband and extended family do the same. We NEVER answer the pollsters and if we accidentally answer the phone we hang up. We don’t like being bothered at home. Not sure how accurate any of this stuff is.

What Tater needs to do is show up at the 50 yard line of Memorial Stadium this fall and give a fire breather about heritage and sovereignty. He can invite that same group of inbreds he spoke to a few years ago and bring all those flags. He might get a lake named after him.

We pretty much know where Hood stands on taxes, entitlements and the empire of publicly funded jobs.

After all this time, I can't say we have a clue where Tate stands on anything and we have even less information on Waller.

If the election were tomorrow, I'd have to vote for Waller. But, as with my vote for Trump, that would only be a vote AGAINST the other candidates.

And I don't know a soul who would sit still and respond to a telephone pole or poll.

Wait a minute? Mississippi is practically functioning as a one-party state, comparable to China, where the Communist Party sets all the policies. Just because Mississippi is run by a poltical party with a different name, doesn't change how the two execute power to set their will over the people in the Commonwealth!?

You can sell those "Democratic Socialist" boogeyman tactics somewhere else - while we are literally ruled by one party in this state.

I think Reeves' poll is about right. Anyone carrying a (D) behind their name these days is going to struggle in a conservative state with everyone but the entitlement folks who are totally one dimensional.

I live in Rankin County and have pretty much voted republican for the last 20+ years, and I can't say that I've run across a single person anywhere that will admit that he/she likes Tater. I honestly don't know who his supporters/base are. Does anybody know? I'll be supporter Waller, and if ends up not beating Tater in the primary, I will just write-in somebody's name in the general election. I will NOT vote for Tater or Hood, period!

In reading the report, it seems they polled with the assumption that the favorability of the current administration will favor Reeves personally.
I suspect they may have overlooked the anomaly of Mississippi politics... our small population. We are more likely to have a lifetime of personal histories with the individual candidates. So negative or positive interactions with a candidate over a lifetimes can result in overcoming party loyalty.
If a candidate was a jerk to you in high school or college or as a neighbor or you know of sleazy behavior, you aren't going to vote for him or her regardless of your party loyalty and vice versa.
I don't think polls will be predictive in this race as one candidate is personable and fellow well met and one is not. It depends on whether the " not" have offended enough people who tell their personal experiences to others.

While Waller is a great potential candidate....you should remember that he has NOT officially qualified. AND there is a GOP candidate other than Reeves--Robert Foster is running and has the right motive and is so passionate about what he believes in and why he believes it. As of now, he has my total support and my vote!

Just reading the news that District 22 has been determined by a federal judge to be racially imbalanced. Even though blacks have a majority, it ain't major enough so it has to be redrawn to give black more of a majority than they already have.

Makes me wonder what the feds will do with Mississippi as a whole, to ensure a democrat has a chance to be elected, statewide. Maybe it'll be similar to the congressional action taken in the day of Ole Abe but democrat votes will count 1.5 as much as republican votes. Don't scoff!

They want to do away with the electoral college because they know that the the big inner cities are who will vote for Democrats/Progressives/etc. and if they can get rid of the EC and make it strictly go on the popular vote, they will control the votes from here on out with those areas siliencing the less populated areas of the US. The Mayor of Jackson's wife(Rukia Lumumba) has a picture on her facbook of a group called "the movement for black lives". In it there is a whole section about basically propping someone up and coaching them "Through an intensive cohort and coaching process, 12 Black organizers will be resourced to serve as campaign managers for the 2018-2019 election cycle to gain progressive candidate and advocacy campaign wins in their cities." Interesting read that I would have never known about without a picture.

For all that want to comment, without bothering to read the details, they should note that this poll was done before Waller announced his intent to run. However, because it was a possibility, a good campaign would poll the various candidates.

The less than obvious question is why would Waller run as a Repub? There was much discussion whether he would run, and if so - as a Repub, Dem, or an Independent?

Any support he may have at this point is evenly divided between Republican voters and Dems. His best bet would have been to take on Hood in the Dem primary where Hood has little money at this point and some serious issues in the black voter community - especially in populous Hinds County. Those same Hinds County voters particularly, but also throughout the state, could move to Waller easily based on, if nothing else, his Dad's term as DA and as Gov.

Beating Hood in August and then taking on Tate in November would allow him to benefit from his crossover appeal. Only problem with this approach is that those that have been whispering in his ear (Josh and FrontStrat ?) wouldn't accomplish their goal which is to have an opponent against his favorite enemy, Tate. And we all know that it is very important that "the Hand" needs someone other than Tate in the Governor's office to continue his financial use of the office.

Hey Tom, go check out the video of the Hinds County board of supervisors and the meeting over redistricting posted above. This is a power grab. This is paying he head of the NAACP $40,000 to draw up what would no doubt be fair voting districts and telling the few people who found out about the meeting to go do themselves. The "cult" you speak of are a result of people voting for the candidate they believe most reflects their own opinions and beliefs. Show me how you're not a hypocrite by telling me they did everything they could to hide that meeting from the public and followed none of the acceptable guidelines required by law to alert the public so they could be there. Tell me you believe beyond a doubt that hiring the head of the NAACP in Mississippi is an obvious and direct conflict of interest. Then you can tell me how republicans, by way of their simple election, is a cult in Mississippi

Actually, Mississippi is a victim of tribalism with all the members of the tribe being " right fighters" and "true believers". It's not unlike Afghanistan in that respect. Different factions cannot work together for the progress and modernization of the whole. If one tribes wins , another loses and it's just a matter of tallying columns of wins and loses in an endless war than never ends. But, in both cases, " failed state" is the best description.

It can be as silly as Ole Miss people and MS State people stereotyping one another with USM as the blue collar step-child. Even then, the social impact can be toxic. Sillier still are the divisions and stereotypes that exist within those tribes based on Greek affliations , financial contributions, contribution to sports, etc.

The tribes have geographical identification as well with the Delta believing they are superior to all and with Central Mississippi , the Coast and Northeast rejecting that notion and any hint they are seen as the lowest on the totem pole. All are vying for in a struggle for both limited resources and a change in perceived status.

Or, it is as serious and deadly as racial tribalism and religion divides between evangelicals and mainstream Christians.

God forbid that we should just people based on their earned achievements and character or political positions based on facts and sound logic. Choose the tribal belief du jour instead!

The only candidate who would have a chance of making a good impression nationally and thus helping Mississippi is Bill Waller but in the current climate, even a little polish is too shiny.
