Leftenent Governor Tate Reeves tweeted yesterday:
Great job by @snyguy & his team. With these savings & a strong economy pushing revenue growth, I believe we can invest those resources in Mississippi's future, our children. It's time to raise salaries again for teachers & boost pay for CPS caseworkers next year! #teacherpayraise
Governor Phil Bryant responded:
Great idea, Lieutenant Governor. I’m all inKingfish note: Looks like we are getting a teacher pay raise next year. Hard to walk this one back. Meanwhile, what is wrong with this picture on the Clarion-Ledger website?

Poor Conway. His sucker just got slapped out of his hand.
This backs the contrarian Donkeys into an uncomfortable corner.
If they doubled the teacher salary I still wouldn't teach. The amount of BS they deal with is not worth having the summer off.
Looks like private school in the picture KF. Do I win an autographed ankle brace from Matt Luke and the Landsharks?
What is wrong with that photo.......could it be that it was taken in a private or independent school?
Election coming up. Hope the teachers don't buy this. Look at how they have treated us the past 8 years. They are not our friends.
Yeah, right. Given how little you've cared about education in the past, I'll believe it when I see it, Tater.
This is Mississippi. It can be walked, talked and shoved back AND the opposition blamed for it all. The sad thing is that if that occurs, the faithful will fall for and help rationalize both ends of the journey. Plus, read the tweet carefully. For competent teachers, it is long past time to raise salaries. As to what Tater believes, I have no doubt he honestly believes he is entitled to be Governor.
Pay raise or not, decreasing the Medicaid deficit from $40m to $5m is pretty impressive.
"The great state of Mississippi can not afford four more years of cronyism! Nepotism! Rascalism! Of service to the interests! I'm a servant of the little man!" Tater Reeves (aka Homer Stokes) Reeves is a useless moron thinking he can be a leader.
Why just the teachers? When was the last time anybody else got a raise? Aren't prioson guards in MS. paid below average wages?
Buying votes, one cynical pay raise at a time.
But, it's "for the children."
12:22, accounting gimmicks always impress the ignorant.
Election-year game theory.
I hope at least it happens for the high achieving teachers' sakes.
What about State Employees? When was the last time any one who isn't a crony given a boost in pay? Are teachers the only voters? And didn't CPS workers JUST get thousands of dollars in additional pay? How's that foster care lawsuit going? The plaintiffs filed another motion for the feds to takeover.
Who gives a crap about State Employees who don't even bother to use their collective strength to demand the immediate reform of PERS. Please, let us know when you are serious about your future.
Wait, didn't we just have a special session to pay for roads and bridges with new "income streams" aka taxes.... where will this new expense stream come from?
State employees don’t deserve a pay raise. 99.9% of them are incompetent dumbasses who are too stupid to cut it in the private sector.
11:02, Tater, along with Phillip and Phil, whether you like it or not, and certainly you don't want to acknowledge it, have done more for education over the past six years than has been done over the past sixty. Granted, much of it has been done against the education bureaucracy because they were more concerned about the students, and their education, rather than protecting the administrative bureaucracy and the 'union'. (Yes, I know we don't have unions for public employees in MS, but in the case of the MEA, that's just a technicality.)
You think the state could have consolidated school districts under the Billy McCoy (and before) leadership of the House? Or do away with elected School Superintendents? Or established Charter School opportunities for those students stuck in absolutely failing districts because of their zip codes?
Check the funding, since that's all you and your ilk seem to think matters - it has increased as well each of those years.
So, don't know what you want to bitch about - unless its like those in the US Senate that want to bitch about the SCOTUS nominee just because he is not "their nominee" - and I'm sure nothing will open your closed eyes to the facts. But thought it would be fun to point them out anyway.
The establishment republicans must be in trouble. We have the Lt. Gov. promising pay raises for votes on one hand. Then Sen. Hyde needing the President to campaign for her and it is well known that the President is only helping those in deep trouble. Doesn't look good for the establishment.
Tate must be worried and he should be.
I think Jay Hughes might be getting under Tate's skin. And, Tate more and more of us have woken to your little game of courting the education vote before an election year and then turning your back the other three.
Tater is becoming a liberal. Who’d a thunk it? Then again, anything goes when its about getting reelected. Wonder why it is a good idea now, but hasn’t been a good idea for ALL of the years that he has been in office.
Tate Reeves hasn’t done ONE DAMN THING FOR TEACHERS in all his useless political career. Now, all the sudden when he knows someone is going to stomp his arrogant a$$ next year in the election, he pulls this old trick and gets Philbilly to chime in? Please pull this prank on someone else. Tate, you can give everyone a raise and I still wouldn’t vote for you. You are an arrogant tyrant dictator. No one is buying the bullshit you are your people are trying to sell. We are all looking forward to 2020 when you go back to being a bank teller. #NoTate2020 #GoodByeTater
A pay raise for state employees making less than $50K annually would be great.... helpful & a definite morale booster for some agencies!!
"If they doubled the teacher salary I still wouldn't teach. The amount of BS they deal with is not worth having the summer off. September 7, 2018 at 10:27 AM"
What 'summer off'? Wife just retired. Her school year ended at the end of June and she went back middle of August. Don't confuse a teacher's work-year with a student's school-year.
Mississippi has not changed since the end of the civil war when almost overnight its poor whites had to suddenly compete with (prevent) poor blacks from having as much as them. The power structure of idiot white supremacists remains the same as well with its concentration being on the Oxford plantation, and that's why the same type of idiots pander to the teachers and they vote for them like sheep to continue to get merely crumbs - and zero respect. Teachers today are no different than the poor whites who worked in the cotton mills of old, while the education bureaucracy has replaced the cotton snobs running things. The people? MS "leaders" couldn't care less, just gimme mine.
A pay raise? Really? I have a friend that "teaches" FOUR year old (Pre-Kindergarten) in JPS and makes around $65,000.00 USD per year...come now....
I will vote early and often against "the man who tries to walk both sides and declares he is not party affiliated", Hughes. He's pure flim flam politician. He salavates to gain control of the purse strings. Has not offered any thoughts of reducing top heavy administrations, safety, waste, and improving efficiency. His mantra is give me money. Most of his spill is similar to McD designed to evoke emotions.
"A pay raise? Really? I have a friend that "teaches" FOUR year old (Pre-Kindergarten) in JPS and makes around $65,000.00 USD per year...come now.."
If she's really a friend, then you know she's been teaching for at least forty years with a master's degree and she's had many classroom assignments over the years before finally accepting lower grades and now Pre-K. Otherwise, you're lying.
Attention 1:22PM - I'm sure you are a decent, sincere person and may not be aware of such things, but please don't feed the trolls, especially the bad ones. Here's a hint: when someone writes, "A have a friend who ," it's either a small troll or a big idiot. Either way, just let 'em be - you cannot "win."
@2:11PM Why don't you take a look at the JPS Payroll/Salaries complete with name and salary that Kingfish posted some time back. You may want to rethink your opinion?
Tater and Phil are just more "Dumb Southerners"

Now, that is just offensive...the polite thing to say is that they are "mentally retarded." Just sayin'...
Will someone tell Tater he can't buy an election with guvment money, oh wait it's Missippi.

Well now, in fairness, he really doesn't want to BUY anything, he just wants a straight-amort four-year zero-nets lease with an option to renew. Hey, the man has been in banking, for gosh sake, and what with the residual, the deductions, and everything else, a lease just makes sense.
Tater needs to get back to workin on his million dollar driveway and stop the bullshit about supporting teachers. He’s a liar and a phony.

"State employees don’t deserve a pay raise. 99.9% of them are incompetent dumbasses who are too stupid to cut it in the private sector."
Typical Mississippi troglodyte mentality.
This genius didn't consider that these are Mississippians handling the states business on a daily basis? This is the very same logic that tells people that its a great idea for Mississippians to spend their money in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee, but not here at home.
Look genius, there people who are highly qualified to work in the private sector, but what kind of private sector jobs are there in Mississippi!?
There are Administrative Assistants in this state that are making $28,000 a year that hold Master's degrees, but they can't find anything in their HOME state of MISSISSIPPI that matches skills!? So the next thing you'll probably say is to leave, right!? Because that's what we do, when people challenge the power structure in this state, the mindless cult followers tell them to leave if they don't like it.
State workers are Mississippians! There interest is in Mississippi! This is their home, this is where their family's are and this is where they want to stay! I am sick and tired of brainless farts like you that sh*t on them for asking for a damn pay raise when they are way past due one compared to their peers in the same positions in the contiguous states.
Phil Bryant and Tate Reeves have ignored this group of people for the last 10 years, to pass tax cuts for corporations that do not even make Mississippi their home!
That's why this state is bereft of talent and that is why the best and brightest are headed to Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida!
"@2:11PM Why don't you take a look at the JPS Payroll/Salaries complete with name and salary that Kingfish posted some time back. You may want to rethink your opinion?"
Sorry, Gomer, but my opinion (and the facts) remain the same. After 40 years in the system, a teacher with a master's degree will finally hit sixty thousand. Compare that to any engineer with a four year degree and three years on the job. Or any good accountant, computer specialist, HR assistant, customer service manager, landscape architect, welder, truck driver or assistant bank vice president.
