JPD issued the following statement.
Jackson Police are investigating a fatal shooting
that occurred on Peachtree Street at Poplar Boulevard. It happened just
before 9:00am this morning after a citizen found an unresponsive male lying in a parking lot.
Officers arrived on scene and observed a black male
suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. The victim
appeared to have been there for some time. Officers later learned from
residents of the area that several shots were
heard the night prior just before midnight and several spent casings were located near the intersection.
Officers did responded to a shots-fired call in the vicinity on last night just before midnight but little information was given by the caller and nothing was found.
The victim’s identity is not yet known. It is also unknown what lead to the shooting and who is responsible.
Anyone with information about this incident is
urged to call CRIME STOPPERS at 601-355-TIPS(8477). A cash reward of up
to $2500 could be yours, if that information leads to an arrest.

Belhaven is LOST.
JPD responded but didn’t find anything. There are probably tire marks on the body from the patrol car.
I hope that more information is released sooner than later. It appears, from reports of those that live nearby, that the shooting occurred last night. JPD and Securitas responded to the report of shots fired and an individual screaming around 11 p.m. but found nothing. A neighbor apparently discovered the body this a.m. Would love to know if the deceased was a resident of the complex , whom he was shot by, etc.
It's the belhaven football players in these units that are causing all the trouble. Dr. Parrot has really changed the school and now hoodlums are on campus. No I'm not some typical liberal white ivy league St. Andrews tuition paying belhaven resident. It's sad that belhaven university has allowed this to happen.
As a thriving young millenial in the new Jackson, my biggest worry is that our justice system doesn’t stereotype potential suspects and harm innocent victims in the process of finding this one individual responsible for this alleged crime. We don’t know all the facts yet. No one jump to any conclusions.
I would advise all reading this to:
(1) make sure your garden/microbrew compost station is locked securely at night
(2) don’t go to spin class alone - use a buddy system
(3) education is the key: school funding cuts always produce crimes such as these.
Y-2 Hey, you're living in a dream world. Its nice and comforting to hope/wish that our system would work like that, but it doesn't and it will not unless the people change. Your post almost sounds sarcastic. If so, that makes more sense.
@ 1:26 - Whats wrong with St. Andrew's? You're doing exactly what makes the system fail and allows these situations to occur.
Very disturbing that shots and screams were heard and no one could locate anything. If there is a parking lot at this intersection, I just cannot place it. So, was the body out in the open at 9:00 AM? What happened to our "triangulation" to ascertain location of gunshots?
Nothing wrong with st Andrews, great school. Only issue I have is the parents often have a liberal mindset. Many residents in belhaven Fondren as well. Look at the nextdoor Fondren site. No one can use skin color to describe anyone suspicious...
So - 'A fatal shooting happened...after a citizen found an unresponsive male...'? Is there a chance 'the citizen' shot the guy who was lying there unresponsive, perhaps sleeping?
"Jackson Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Peachtree Street at Poplar Boulevard. It happened just before 9:00am this morning after a citizen found an unresponsive male lying in a parking lot."
Look out Chicago, we're gonna catch ya !
He was a tad more than unresponsive.......he was dead. JPD is FUBAB. All you Ole Miss students from the 60s will know what that means.
It's a small parking lot with spaces for about four cars. It's somewhat secluded by the landscaping around it.
This "parking lot" is in reality a paved area for two, maybe three cars for an adjacent apartment building. It is surrounded on three sides by a neighbor's 'garden' - very thick and tall vegetation around it. Drove by there this morning because I couldn't figure out how a body could have been overlooked in a 'parking lot', but after having seen it, understand it now.
From neighbor's accounts, it appears the shooting occurred last night shortly after the drubbing was over up north in Oxford - around 11. Cops came back this morning when someone reported the body and spent most of the morning at the intersection.
Attn 4:05 PM Chicago's murder rate per capita is nowhere near Jackson's murder rate per capita. Don't worry, Jackson will continue to overkill at an unprecedented rate. The only reason Jackson doesn't get the recognition is because of the size and the unrecognized sewer we live in. SAD BUT TRUE
The Belhaven? Before we know it there will be murders in The Fondren.
The parking lot belongs to the adjacent unkempt apartment building which is a Nejam property. Nejam also owns the property just blocks away on Carlisle Street where there was a cache of semiautomatic weapons and heroin found last week. I believe there was a murder last year at another apartment complex on Poplar Street that he owns. Neighbors say that he cared about the properties at one time, but most are now in steady decline. The parking lot should have been illuminated for the safety of its tenants.
KF - at one time, Jackson was number 3 in the murder rate contest. Behind New Orleans and St. Louis.
Have you seen updated stats?
PRAY FOR JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI!!!
It's time to sell before y'all can't give your homes away.
Don’t sell your homes. Persevere and build a GREATER Jackson. It is going TO BE SUCH A COOL AND PROGRESSIVE CITY!
Could the resulting increase in the cost of Homeowner's Insurance in the area due to this never ending yet escalating "perception of crime" be attributed to the "by any means necessary" part of the "FREE THE LAND!" movement? Axing for a friend.
*Belhaven Neighborhood Ass'n immediately looks to see how much it would be to set up a Checkpoint Charlie at every entrance to the compound.*
Murders, sinkholes and downgraded bond ratings, OH MY!
Murder in The Belhaven - a new TV drama starring...
Why do people want to slam Belhaven residents for trying to remain in Jackson and build their lives in a safe community when all the others just split like little punks?
The parking lot where this crime took place is hidden behind tall plantings. The lot itself is unlit and full of junk like Sanford and Son.
"Perception of Crime"
Belhaven looks safe but there are signs that something is amiss. Baptist medical center pd patrols parts of the area, and a security car is seen in the area patroling. Yet I see women jogging by themselves about sunset. Is there a bad area of Belhaven I don't know about. Looks like the houses and yards look good to me.
Stay away from the 1100 block of Lyncrest. Very rough.
10:11
There is a WORLD of difference between splitting like a little punk and moving your family to a place where you don't have to worry about them being shot down like rabid dogs. Of course, you don't know about things like adult responsibility, now do you? Bless your heart.
@3:48, having lived in Jackson for some 30 plus years now, I've never worried about having my family being shot down - like rabid dogs or in any other manner. Not any more than I have when I have traveled throughout this state and many others. Yes, I pay attention to my surroundings WHEREVER I happen to be at the time. No, I don't carry except in the most extreme of circumstances - and sometimes that might include while I'm in some of our neighboring counties as well.
Why don't I worry about being shot down like rabid dogs, or in other manner? Because I, nor my family, ran in the groups that are doing the shootings, either because as was noted on another site earlier today, where either drugs, or black women, or both, were involved. (And yes, on the other site it was a black woman who made the observation, particularly about the Belhaven shooting.)
Don't know where you live,3:48 - but do you lock your doors at night? If so, and your neighborhood is such that you moved your family there to avoid being shot down like rabid dogs, let me ask you -- why do you do it? And as I'm sure you will answer to keep the Jackson scums out doesn't address the question. If you have to worry about whoever, you did not move to an isolated island where you don't have to worry about being shot down like rabid dogs, you would only have to worry about the dogs being rabid themselves.
Enjoy your life in your moated castle. I'll enjoy mine where I feel perfectly safe at night.
4:30 - Are you really so ignorant as to think you need to be 'running with thugs' in order to be shot dead by one? You 'feel perfectly safe at night' but don't bother to tell us the general area in which you reside. If you're not lying altogether, then you're certainly failing your family, if you have one. But, if you ARE lying, then your post makes perfect sense.
You also forgot to tell us where your kids, if you have any, go to school. And you didn't tell us where your wife, if you have one, shops for clothes and groceries or where she gets her nails did and such. Actually, you've probably been sitting cross-legged in a circle sucking on that helium balloon passed to you by Ben Allen.
Have the police identified the murdered man yet? When they do identify him, will they release his name via the local media as soon as possible?
Belhaven is such a beautiful and unique place. It s a rare jewel that is not properly recognized. I hope it will get stronger and thrive.
To 2:13 PM: Where's the supposed problem on the 1100 block of Lyncrest? According to Google Maps, it looks to be a very nice block.
4:30 seems fascinated with the word 'rabid'. He's also being untruthful. But he failed to mention where his wife shops, where his kids matriculate and where he jobs at night.
I’m pretty sure 4:30’s use of the word rabid is in response to the post above suggesting that folks who live in Jackson risk “being shot down like rabid dogs”. To 8:41- I did not post above, but I live in Belhaven. I have lived her my entire adult life. I’ve raised 4 children here. They went to private schools, which is a known expense when you choose to live here, although the siren call of free education was appealing at times. We go to church in the city, grocery shop at Kroger I-55 N, shop generally at highland village, county line and dogwood, and I have my nails done on old canton road. I believe those were the questions. I like my choices. I like my life. I hope you are equally satisfied with yours.

3:48 PM here. I've lived in Jackson for 64 years. My entire life. Unlike you who has lived here for 30+ years, and you better believe I set the alarm and lock my doors at night.
Jackson has one of the highest murder rates, per capita, in the United States. That's a fact.
You claim to carry a concealed weapon only in extreme circumstances. Why would you have to EVER carry a hidden gun, if things are so safe here? Are you a scared little punk?
As far as your racist dog whistle saying that it's only "them killing them", the family of Carolyn Temple might argue against that. (Remember, killed in Belhaven for the crime of retrieving the garbage can).
Like I said earlier, Bless your heart.
8:08...On which side of County Line do you shop? Not much left on the south side of that road. Let's see...there's Dollar General at the corner of County Line and Old Canton...then there's a gas station that sells chicken where CL intersects with Pear Orchard...then we have a guitar shop next to where Academy is boarded up. A shoe store and bridal salon over in the Chic-Fil-A area. Other than Dragos, that's about it.
You live there but sent your kids to 99% white private schools so they wouldn't have to be exposed to a certain cultural experience. Dogwood is nowhere near the city limits of Jackson and I've lost count of the Jackson churches that have moved either to Ridgeland or Madison.
It's unclear if you're bragging about your status as a semi-liberal or you're simply confused as to your options.
No, 9:17. Not the same person, and not even remotely a liberal and not bragging about anything. Just saying I don't understand why folks who choose not to live in Jackson feel so irritated by folks who choose to live in Jackson. My choices suit me and when they no longer do I will make a change. Your choices obviously suit you. Its all good. Why the vitriol?
Yes, such vitriol!! It does not make sense. They are working hard to create more separation and disharmony amongst us.
Yes, NEJAM purchased so many of the apartments in Belhaven and does not maintain them. If they alone would police and maintain their properties, a larger problem would be resolved.
I'm curious as to what the body count has to be in Belhaven proper before the asking prices on homes start coming down. Seriously. I think there are some beautiful homes in Belaven, but the asking prices are insane. Obviously, Jackson is in a death spiral. But that doesn't mean you couldn't buy a house there and ride it out until it completely craters. For the right price. Especially since you'll never recoup your investment.
Local media are now reporting the identity of the shooting victim - Cornelius Bankston, 19 years old.
