Bloomberg News reported Mississippi Republicans created a PAC to help Senator Thad Cochran defeat State Senator Chris McDaniel:
Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, facing a vigorous challenge in the Republican Party’s primary election, is getting help from a super-political action committee.
Cochran, in the Senate for more than 35 years, “has been very effective in his representation of Mississippi,” Brian Perry, director and treasurer of the committee, Mississippi Conservatives, said in an e-mail to Political Capital. Perry, the managing partner of Jackson-based Capstone Public Affairs, praised Cochran’s work on agriculture and appropriations policy and in helping Mississippi’s recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
“His seniority, values and reputation in the U.S. Senate can make a significant difference for the State of Mississippi in the next six years, which would be magnified if Republicans do retake control of the Senate,” said Perry, a former political director for the Mississippi Republican Party. “The worst outcome for Mississippi would be for Senator Cochran to lose in the primary and Democrats to have a fighting chance to repeat their wins in similar situations in other states.”
Cochran’s opponent in the June 3 primary is state Sen. Chris McDaniel, who is attacking Cochran’s Republican credentials on fiscal policy. McDaniel has backing from the Senate Conservatives Fund, which is also trying to unseat Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and the Club for Growth.
“Voters need a change” from Cochran, who entered Congress in 1973 as a House member, and McDaniel is “an absolute conservative rock star in the state legislature,” Andy Roth, the Club for Growth’s vice president of government affairs, said Jan.5 on C-Span’s “Washington Journal” program.
Cochran and McDaniel disagreed over a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill that grew out of a budget compromise negotiated by Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington. President Barack Obama signed the measure into law today.
Cochran was one of 17 Republicans who voted for the measure, which he said was the “best option to avoid another government shutdown, stop detrimental cuts to our national defense and continue the fight to contain federal spending.” He also touted the bill’s benefits for Mississippi.
In a Jan. 14 statement, McDaniel said Cochran “has played a role in our deficit crisis” while urging him to vote against the “disastrous spending bill.”..... Article

McDaniel is quietly being shunned at the capitol this session. He is now the poster boy for jokes by everyone. Its reached the JUST SAD LEVEL.
It is tough to go first.
But the message of significant discontent amongst many conservatives in Mississippi is no less so because of the treatment he is receiving at the hands of the establishment Repulicans.
Very well said, 10:21 AM.
I am conservative Repub. I will not be voting or supporting Cochran. RINOs need to retire or be defeated.
McDaniel is a wanna-be. He tries way too hard to paint himself as a big time DC politician. Instead, he comes off as a total phony. Those TV ads were laughable.
"McDaniel is 'an absolute conservative rock star in the state legislature,' Andy Roth, the Club for Growth’s vice president of government affairs, said Jan.5 on C-Span’s 'Washington Journal' program."
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
It's not that I disagree with replacing Cochran; it's that I disagree replacing Cochran with a wannabe contender who has no apparent qualifications for the office he seeks other than a marginal ability to recite "conservative" talking points, whose performance as a legislator has been wholly unimpressive, and who seems to believe he can be elected in Republican Mississippi on the single issue that "I'm not Cochran." He -- and many of y'all -- are delusional.
Opinion: Cochran is planning to pull a bait and switch - Andy Taggart style - within 2 years of being re-elected. Hoseman is the intended beneficiary - but will be tricky to execute as planned.
Should McDaniel lose I'll be voting for Bill Marcy. At least with the Democrats I know up front they are trying to screw me in the ass. Cochran, Wicker, Harper and Pickering are moderate backstabbers that I'll never vote for again regardless of the alternative. Won't be voting for no Barbours either. Chris Christie? The man is a joke.
Thad has the very likely chance of being Appropriations Chair for 4 years. Would we as a poor state rather have that or Ted Cruz, Jr?
seriously why is this even a question.
2:01,
If Thad isn't approp chair then that means he lost the race.
I'll take that outcome every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Because at the end of the day I'm tired of the status quo. Funneling money to pet projects based on whose ass is occupying the seat is wrong. And if it takes a Ted Cruz wannabe getting elected seat by seat then I'm fine with that. Corporate cronyism needs to end and those jackasses in Washington should start voting the way their constituents tell them to, not their corporate campaign contributors. If Thad is anything, he's bought and paid for by big $$ lobbyists.
Purging Thad and Harper would be an outstanding start.
2:38 - i respect your comments, but i'd rather have my world of reality versus your eutopia.
Thad has done more for MS than arguably any MS politician alive today. Look what he's done single handly for MSU, Ole Miss and the Medical Center. Look what he did for the Coast after Katrina.
You think those three campuses look like they do today without him? You think the Coast would have gotten the money they did without Thad (certainly Haley pushed him)?
I'm sure there are 100 other examples of projects he has helped counties and cities all throughout the state during his time.
"Eddie! What have you done for me lately!"
Within the past couple of years, Thad has turned a deaf ear to his constituents. The pork was nice, but it's made us (and the nation) fat and lazy. Thad should be a gentleman and retire with whatever goodwill he has left.
Bless you 2:38 pm and 3:31 pm.
It seems odd that the Vote-Cochran-or-die crowd (the exact type of attitude as the standard liberal scream crowd) has formed a specific PAC for this election.
"those jackasses in Washington should start voting the way their constituents tell them to,"
Thad's constituents have spent many years telling him "Send as much as you can to Mississippi"
98 other senators have gotten similar messages from 49 other groups of constituents.
Please, please vote to keep Thad as our drug dealer. We're all fucked up and we never want to come down.
bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
McDaniel's only chance to do anything beyond the legislature is to show some sense and pull out now.
Campaign us interruptus?
McDaniel is a JOKE!! Thad Cochran has forgotten more about this position than McDaniel could ever hope to know!! Re-elect THAD for MISSISSIPPI!!!
12:24, you are obviously an idiot. (1) Cochran isn't the type to pull that kind of stunt, and (2) even if he were, Hosemann would be the LAST of the possible choices to be the beneficiary.
Cochran wouldn't go for a Hosemann appointment, after Gilbert's crap over the past six months trying to push him to the side so the the 'smart one' could take the position.
Bryant wouldn't appoint Hosemann ahead of any of his band of followers - something Hosemann isn't.
So, just because Gilbert thinks he is the most deserving, and the smartest, and the one that should be there - why would you fall into the well thinking that such an appointment (again, something that ain't gonna happen) would be his.
... Cochran isn't the type to pull that kind of stunt ...
Lying bag-of-wind Taggart said the same thing ... after the fact!
Politicians are bad. Bad politicians are worse. McDanielle is a bad politician (a double negative).
From this thread, one would think "earmarks"--as opposed to, say, Medicare--are what's driving deficits and debt.
Now I understand why the pac was formed. Its to raise funds to pay for 2 people to constantly post comments that are derogatory towards anyone who is against Cochran. NOW I get it!
Unless you boys are going to stand next to me in the voting booth, with a gun, follow me around and 'monitor' every conversation I have, you really are wasting your time. But it really is nice to have confirmation that the old school Repubs haven't changed a bit. Face it boys, old RINOs are not liked, its time for a breath of fresh air.
Y'all are better with talking points than your candidate is. (That's far more of an indictment of him than it is a compliment to you.) The saddest thing is that you interject RINO into every other sentence -- how many of y'all even know what that stands for? -- without being able to distinguish between a Cochran and a Collins. Your political philosophy is derived from bumper stickers and your political activity consists of ranting to your spouse and on social media. Your candidate is funded almost exclusively by Beltway groups (that are evil in your eyes when funding anyone with whom you disagree), and the largest contributors among you will only write McDaniel a check with three zeros on the end.
I'm telling you this for your onw good: Hold on to your money. You should spend it on something useful -- maybe even give it to charity -- and then all meet up in the Target parking lot to kick each other in the balls. You'll come away from that with less pain and more satisfaction than you will by getting emotionally invested in McDaniel's Senate campaign that is D.O.A.
Shalom.
Let's see - some Mississippi folks form a PAC to raise money for Cochran, and the crazies go crazy. But McDaniel is being totally funded by a couple of out of state PACS who have a history of funding Republican candidates to run against incumbent Republicans, who - in the few cases where they win the primary they lose to a Democrat.
McDaniel hasn't raised enough money on his own to buy one commercial. Everything you have seen thus far came from the Club for Growth and the so-called Senate Conservative Fund.
And, by the way 8:08, don't believe the PAC here is paying anybody. Don't know about the "2 people" you are referring to, but bet its not much difference then the couple of mouth-breathers that are on here constantly bashing Republicans that to them aren't 'perfect'.
January 21, 2014 at 9:00 AM = desperately in need of a conjugal visit
9:00,
This is where you're wrong. I don't give a shit whether it's a republican or republican in name only (would that stand for RINO?), a damn democrat or a purple people eater, I want someone to vote based on what his constituents tell him and not his sponsors. Cochran and Harper sold us out with their spineless votes on spending and Obamacare. They have no courage. None.
And thanks for the backhanded compliment about messaging. Me and my ill-informed compadres will vote for whomever is on the ballot not named Cochran. It's beyond time for a breath of fresh air. And if McDaniel isn't the guy, then somebody else will be. It is entirely possible to break the machine and the fact that you are on an obscure (sorry KF) blog post trading barbs with Joe Schmoe voter tells me just how threatened you feel.
I like it.
Besides, didn't Big Buddha tell you to run scared or not at all?
I know the Repub insiders have a plan to enthrone someone. It is an electoral robbery if the plan is for Cochran to bow out after a couple of years to an appointment of one of the faithful. The Secretary of State ,who has put on the mantle of the protector of the electorate, might be part of such a robbery plan. The corporate business filings under Hosemann have shifted as earlier records are not there anymore. I have in mind a utility business with a Barbour officer which is no longer in the business records.
1:36, you are about as full of shit as anything I have read on this site in months -- no, years.
I realize that McDaniel's faithful can find a black helicopter under any lily pad, but you really take the cake.
If Cochran was going to resign and hand his position to someone else, it would have been while Barbour was Governor, not with Bryant. Second, if for any reason there is a vacancy in the office, it is up to the Governor to choose the appointment and that would be Bryant. Of all the potential prospects, he would probably be choosing fellow Rankin Countainian Harper - another person Cochran would never 'hand' the mantle over to on his own voalition.
And I'll be glad to bet with you on the mississing records in the SOS office. While not about to go to bat to defend anything out of Hosemann's office, I'll take on any bet you want to make about records that used to exist that are no longer there. Either speak up with facts, or shut the f*** up.
8:56 PM, We realize you're a Cochran die hard, but you may need to lay off the caffeine.
" Me and my ill-informed compadres will vote for whomever is on the ballot not named Cochran."
Including "Thompson"?
12:07, voting "Thompson" would be voting "Cochran".
