wow... anyone needing to publicly display a picture of them just holding a gun, especially one that looks like/is a tactical firearm, should be forced into a mental evaluation.

Just stalked his public facebook. Other than the assault weapon, seems like an average suburban Christian republican. Nice message about thanking friends for prayers when his father passed away. There is a video on his wall that shows him firing the gun and it's fully automatic. Wonder what set him off?

On Jan 31, 2010, his Facebook says, "My Dad died 4 days ago, young at 72 from a heart attack during a leg amputation." I didn't know the man personally, but his bizarre behavior could very well be caused by effects of anti-depressants. Sadly, doctors hand out anti-depressants like candy now. I know from close personal experiences that seemingly "harmless" anti-depressants can make even a sane person snap and become homicidal/suicidal. If his father died end of Jan and he sought help for depression, it's likely the RX was what made him snap.

There are 'some' doctors? who do overprescribe I agree, I had one who gave me a prescrip and told me to take 3 a day. My best friend since 1st grade is an RN and she flipped. I took one at night only and for a short period of time. However, I know this Dr they were seeing yesterday. She is very conservative in all aspects. I seriously do not believe that IF he was a 'patient' and IF she prescribed him anything it would have been enough to bring about such behavior. He abused it for this result to say the least IF he were even given anything. From what I can tell, they were there for marriage therapy so no prescription would have been given. I personally think, with all I've heard and seen, he was a timebomb and would have done something this stupid one day or the next. That is something a Dr. cannot keep from happening unless they follow the patient around day and night. This Dr is in no way responsible for this.

Also, now that I've had time to think about yesterday as I came back from lunch and heard the male voice raised. I must have had an Angel on my shoulder. I couldn't tell if the voices were coming from the attorney's office or the Dr office. I knew the Dr's receptionist was not in as she was in the parking lot talking with the wife and son. Of course I had no idea of anything at this point. As the elevator came down to get me the voices quited and I shruged it off and went on upstairs to my office. If I'd have thought for one second the Dr. was in any sort of trouble I'd have turned that corner in an instant to help her. If I'd have busted up in on them it could have been a very different outcome for her and myself. For once I'm glad I didn't pay close enough attention.

If you don't think those drugs will screw you up, just watch the next commercial on TV and listen to the side effects. All they have to do is make you aware of the side effects.

Oh I totally agree! They certainly will and I do not think the doctors giving them out know exactly how they affect people. I've been prescribed Cymbalta (going thru divorce from Bi-polar w/sever paranoia husband is tough!) I took it for 3 months. You couldn't hold me down and shove one in my mouth today. That was the most horrid experience ever and I took myself off of it with that Dr trying to increase it! The side effects coming off of that is worse than the reason you started it to begin with! Have you ever felt your brain flip? Trust me, not fun. I just do not think the doctor this man was at Friday gave him a prescription and if so, she is VERY conservative in all other aspects of her life so I'd imagine she was in that aspect also. Some doctors WILL prescribe more than others. This particular one I highly doubt is one of the looser prescribing ones.

Sometimes it takes time to find the right antidepressant drug for the right person. And the side effects can indeed be strong because they are powerful, powerful drugs that affect brain chemistry. I wouldn't be so naive to say they are never overprescribed, but I would argue that they have probably prevented a whole lot more people from snapping like this guy apparently did.

does the atf do anything?? remember that doctor who was in a swat standoff 5-6 years ago in madison county, threatened wife w. murder suicide? it was on wlbt... he fired a shot or two. got fired from mea group, but no jail time:
-currently practices at madison co. hospital!
-still has full auto guns!
-still has FFL license!

Why doesn't Madison Police Chief Gene Waldrop make some kind of official statement regarding this incident.His Dept. was involved in the initial contact with Mr.Mitts when this thing began.Waldrop should be more Professional in the way he conducts himself as MPD Chief.

Wonder if Mr. Mitts had an HO4 so his Liability would pay for the damages? In a normal purchase the buyer has an HO3, etc which would be void if a tenant was in the dwelling.... I certainly hope Mr. Green isn't stuck paying repairs out of his pocket...

If this guy was a threat barricaded in the house with rifles, why did most things in Lake Caroline go on almost normally, excepting the few houses in close proximity.

Those rifles have effective ranges of over a mile. The guy standing on the MHP SWAT truck would have been an easy target for a snipe attack. So would have several I saw on videos and photos.

And I can't see why they only saw the blood late in the evening once a sniper or whatever was in position. That should have been seen earlier, easily.

I am not saying anything was not above level, nor am I saying this guy is not responsible. He probably is. But some of these things don't add up.

Every hostage situation/standoff is blazing new ground. None are the same and all are easy to second guess. I think the sheriff did exactly what he should have done and handled the situation as well as it could have been handled.

Um, this psychiatrist is my psychiatrist. Previous posters correct about being extremely conservative.

IF he was ex-military it would fit as she is a specialist in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The PTSD is WAY more likely to have set him off than anything this doc gave him.

Ex-military shows up at psychiatrist's office who specializes in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and then holes up in his house and has stand off with police? Sorry, but it makes perfect sense to me. She obviously hit a trigger button in him (no pun intended) or he was triggered before appointment and family knew he was unbalanced enough to take him there.

Receptionist was overheard telling wife in parking lot "you should have never let him walk up in that office with a gun". Sorry but I'd have called the law if my husband, with that mental history, were that 'upset', was armed, and going anywhere!

But here is what I had a source tell me...It was said that he killed himself but he had two shots to the head...UMMM how does that happen? I have noticed Breeland stays out of the public eye quite a bit..I don't know I live in Madison before the yuppie invasion..and now that it is time to retire we will be heading out of here and with all the cover up around here I can't say as I will miss it... I have just learned of this because I was trying to track Keith down.
I have known Keith since he was just entering college at UCF, he was about 20?
Best hearted and generous guy that you would ever want to meet.
Great at Math and the Sciences. Very nerdy.
But, always troubled and on Medication.
After college I often spoke to him by phone both In Mississippi and in Moscow.
He often spoke of suicide and we would kid him about it like,
“Well, if you do it, do it in the bathroom so you don’t make a big fucking mess.”.
Our tough love seemed to snap him out of it and make him laugh.
He had many friends.
He was a good shot though. He wouldn’t have missed very often.
I don’t believe he meant to harm anyone except himself.
And, no. He was never in the military.
And, no. He didn’t have PTSD.
He did get some training in automatic weapons through the UCF ROTC.
I trained him but he wasn’t comfortable with guns and left during one night leaving the weapon leaning against a tree.
No, he was not an ROTC Cadet either.
I am Saddened and my knee jerk reaction is to blame the Psychiatrist.
After all, he had been under Psychiatric care and medication for years.
What happened between them? Did she suggest separating his wife and child from him?!?
Now, That would have made him snap.
