Well, Councilmen De' Keither Stamps and Councilwoman Larita Stokes voted against a $100,000 change order on the Fortification Street project. Hemphill Construction submitted the change order after it discovered more work was required than the original plans anticipated. A giant hole developed on Fortification. The drainage system required clearing and cleaning as it was filled with trash and debris. The water lines in one area were too close to the surface and require an arched pipe for replacement instead of a regular pipe. Chief Engineer Robert Lee told the council the work was unexpected as it was almost impossible to predict what problems Hemphill would discover as work progressed.

Morgan Keegan victims in Mississippi filed suit against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) yesterday in U.S. District Court. The victims allege the SEC did not distribute $100 million to investors defrauded by Morgan Keegan as directed by law. Morgan Keegan paid $200 million for defrauding investors when it sold mortgage-backed securities.

Not much of interest, although Mayor Lumumba is asking the city council to confirm the appointment of Soyonda Green (not to be confused with Soylant Green) as Chief Administrative Officer. Mr. Green was a legislative assistant to Congressman Bennie Thompson and was a Sergeant with the Hattiesburg Police Department in 2009. He is the son of Hinds County Senior Circuit Judge Tomie Green. Not much else of interest on the agenda.

Front page story on prescription drug abuse of course. No less than five stories and op-ed pieces on the dastardly threat to our state. Check out the headlines in the op-ed section: Death by overdose at new heights, Painkillers pose big risk for addiction, and Bryant supports restriction for key painkiller.The newspaper was serious. They rolled out the big guns and had Jerry Mitchell write a story, Technology makes faking prescriptions for narcotics much easier, in the Saturday edition. The artillery barrage before the attack. However, Mr. Mitchell did join in the main assault on Sunday as he interviewed the Governor.

Gannett stays true to form.
Spoke to the WSJ reps several more times. Didn't deliver last week, today was in improvement. The carrier delivered The New York Times. She has delivered it exactly 3 out of 11 weekends. It being the WSJ. Twice she has delivered the NYT instead. Thank you Gannett. I'm starting to wonder if the carrier is literate. Seriously. Maybe I'll pull a Chane and next Friday night grab one of those orange barrels, put it on the curb, and tape a poster that says "Wall Street Journal HERE" with a big arrow. Of course I'd return the barrel in the morning. If you're a Gannett advertiser, advertise on their websites. Customers can't see your print ads if they can't deliver the paper properly.

Graham & Hunter: Liars!!! (Updated)
Updated: Al Hunter withdrew from the race today. (July 24, 2013) Darryl McQuirter qualified.
Hinds County Interim District 2 Supervisor Al Hunter qualified to run for the seat today while his brother withdrew from the race as well. Mr. Hunter earlier promised not to run for the seat when appointed. Supervisors Kenneth Stokes and Robert Graham both said they were appointing replacements for Phil Fisher and the late Doug Anderson who agreed not to run for the seats.No matter. What are promises between friends.

WLBT: Stokes says let's go to court over primaries
WLBT reported Hinds County Supervisor Robert Graham said the county will not pay for the Democratic and Republican primaries in the elections to replace the late Doug Anderson and Phil Fisher on the Board of Supervisors. However, he appeared to back down a little in a letter posted below. Stokes said the parties could take the county to court.

Congratulations to the Faulkner Estate as it managed to find itself compared to Sharknado after a federal judge dismissed its complaint against Sony Pictures. Truly a feat worthy of the scribe as the Judge threw out a complaint that was on a par with Tara Reid's acting. Or should I have written it had as little logic as Tara Reid's brain? Or was the foundation for the complaint as jiggly as her... well, there are so many different comparisons one can imagine when Sharknado enters the picture but you get the idea.

Graham says county will not pay for primary elections.
Hinds County Supervisor Robert Graham told the Hinds County Republican and Democrat parties the county will not pay for primaries for the supervisor special elections for Districts 2 and 4 in November. Both parties recently announced they will hold primaries and runoffs for the two elections to replace Phil Fisher and the late Doug Anderson. The letters are posted below.

Who will rid us of these pests?
I'm going to write up the story later, but here is a video from the Monday meeting of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. The Board rejected the lowest bid for mosquito spraying after Mr. Hathorn of Hathorn Pest Control threw a hissy fit over not getting the contract. He demanded, no, that is not right, he told the board to award him the contract without accepting competitive bids. The board rejected the winning bid and took no further action. Too bad Phil Fisher wasn't there. He would've straightened out any vendor who told the board to do something. Enjoy.
Judge doesn't monkey around, orders rematch in Canton.
Note: Attorney Cory Wilson will appear on WJNT at 8:05 this morning to discuss the verdict.
Looks like we got ourselves a rematch in Canton. A judge threw out the results of the alderman's election in Ward 1 and ordered a new one be held. The Governor will select the date. The Clarion-Ledger reported:
