JPD officers make nearly double what they earned ten years ago. JJ obtained a roster of JPD employees and their salaries through a public records request. The city of Jackson reported there are 348 employees at JPD.
JPD officers started at $27,000 in 2016 and made up to $32,500 with experience. All that changed when Capitol Police entered the picture as it paid officers over $50,000. The invisible hand indeed raised the boats as the competition forced all local agencies, including JPD, to make their salaries comparable. JPD police officers now earn $51,000 per year while Master Police Officers earn $56,000.
Justin Vicery reported in the Clarion-Ledger in 2016:
Starting officer pay in Jackson is $27,000. After a year, it goes up to $32,000....
The pay for Jackson police also falls below the average for the state, even though Jackson is the largest city in the state. The average salary for police officers across the state was $34,550, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. Since 2010, the highest paying salaries for officers in Mississippi crept up some, but trended downward for starting pay. Article
Although JPD reports 244 employees assigned to patrol operations, that number is somewhat misleading as it includes school crossing guards, recruits, park rangers, detectives, sergeants, leftenants, and a captain. The roster states there are 100 Master Police Officers and 39 police officers.
The roster is posted below.

That may be so, but they are doing twice as much of nothing while on duty.
"The roster states there are 100 Master Police Officers and 39 police officers"
So there are 139 police officers patrolling Jackson in 3 shifts 24 hours a day.
Thank God for Capitol Police.
If you read the rest of the CL article, Vance said he had 212 patrol officers. I remember when he ordered M4's for his troops, it was around 300 purchased.
