JPD issued the following statement.
On Saturday, April 25, 2026, at approximately 7:30pm JPD was dispatched to Leavell Woods Park regarding an Aggravated Assault in which two individuals had been shot. The shooting occurred as a large group of young people gathered for a celebration. When officers arrived on scene the crowd had dispersed. Officers located one of the victims lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. Precinct 1 officers administered basic life support until AMR arrived and transported him to a local hospital. The second victim had already been transported to the hospital by private vehicle. Robbery/Homicide Detectives and the Mobile Crime Unit were called out. The scene was processed and several individuals are being interviewed by detectives. Homicide detectives were notified after he was transported to the hospital that 18- year-old Justin Body had succumbed to his injury. His next of kin has been notified. The second victim was still in the hospital at the time of this press release. This is an active investigation. Proof once again that it doesn’t matter who the police chief is, until the culture is changed this will continue to occur. This culture has been evolving for decades and will take longer to change.

My son played in a couple of baseball tournaments there in the mid 1990’s. Sounds like the area has completely transitioned since those days. So sad.
As we read on this site consistently, there are no consequences for acts like this in the Jackson Catch and Release program. These kids (and they usually ARE kids) have no fear of authority, because they know they're likely to either be back on the streets soon or if they're incarcerated at all, they'll be out in an incredibly short amount of time, having learned better criminal skills than they had before they went in.
Society HAS to stop asking "why" these kids did what they did and start saying "we don't care why you did it," you've now got real consequences to suffer. Society can't change the thug culture, it has to provide penalties for being a part of it. Until a real deterrent is offered to these feral people, NOTHING is going to change.
We DO NOT have to live like this! We have simply shrugged and assumed we do.

'The Succumbing' would make a grand title for a dark comedy filmed in Jackson's happening new Metrocenter movie-making facilities. Kingfish, I believe that the implied copyright is yours. I'm seeing something absurdist, with nods to 'The Exorcist', 'A Madea Family Reunion', and 'Lust in the Dust'.
Moving the plot along, is the competition between Jackson, Mississippi, and Managua Nicaragua, for top place as 'World Murder Capital'.
Considering that Jackson IS an absurdist dark comedy, the screenplay should basically write itself. Grok could write it, even - like on the day Grok went wild and declared itself 'MechaHitler' - revealing it had progressed to the point of having a wicked sense of humor (so subtle most people didn't get it).

Once upon a time, even in the Wild West, you couldn't " take your guns to town" anymore. Parents with troubled children and families with mentally ill relatives could get a 48 evaluation at a mental hospital or psychiatric wing of any hospital to keep everyone safe. Two sworn statements would get that accomplished. We didn't have to wait for the troubled to " hurt themselves or others". When that happens, it's TOO LATE. I'm tired of hearing the neighbors, friends and relatives say, " We knew something was wrong but..."
You wanted unrestricted gun rights for the deaf, dumb ,blind, senile and crazy, you got it. You even elect them to public office. And, you decided kids whose brains aren't fully developed at 18 can have guns without the proper training the military provides. What could go wrong when you don't think having "responsibility" is the key to having " rights"?

Some of greatest doctors, scholars, scientists , professors, and engineers we know were products of single family homes. Many of the school shooters had both parents in the family. I agree the culture and depressing morale of this city seems to have turned the devil loose. It's not just a family, school, or church matter...it's also a dysfunctional COJ administration that has plagued us for decades.
Don't tell me that you actually think not having a Dad at home is "no biggee".
