Jackson Mayor John Horhn issued the following statement.
At approximately 3 a.m. yesterday, a fire occurred at Beth Israel, Jackson’s only Jewish synagogue.
The Jackson Fire Department responded quickly, contained the blaze, and extinguished the fire.
Acts of antisemitism, racism, and religious hatred are attacks on Jackson as a whole and will be treated as acts of terror against residents’ safety and freedom to worship. Targeting people because of their faith, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation is morally wrong, un‑American, and completely incompatible with the values of this city.
Jackson stands with Beth Israel and the Jewish community, and we’ll do everything we can to support them and hold accountable anyone who tries to spread fear and hate here.
I was at Beth Israel yesterday, and I saw firsthand how our partners stepped up. I want to thank the Jackson Fire Department and its Arson Investigation Division, JPD, along with our federal partners at ATF, the FBI, and the Joint Terrorism Task Force, for moving quickly, working together, and getting their arms around this situation.Their work led to the swift arrest of a suspect, and we’ll continue to support their efforts as the investigation moves forward.
Note: Make comments in the earlier post about the burning.
