The Mississippi Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety issued the following statements.
MDOT
DPS
Due to nearly impassable icy road conditions, traffic is being stopped on Interstate 55 northbound at the Highway 32 (Oakland) Exit 227 and on Interstate 22 westbound at Exit 37 (Lake Center).
These roadways must remain clear so the Mississippi Department of Transportation crews can safely remove ice and work to improve conditions. Motorists are urged to avoid travel and stay off the roads until conditions improve.
We will continue to provide updates as conditions improve.

The ice is literally concrete on those interstates. They should have closed them Sunday to commercial and recreational use. They will likely have to resurface many miles of road after this storm. Bad bad situation.
Closed for drag racing
Chicago interstates are open and the weather is worse there
Mississippi is the worst prepared state when it comes to ice.
They had at least four hours Tuesday above freezing, and six hours today...and about 8 hours above is forecast tomorrow. It should clear most of the major roadways by then, especially if they get sun on it, too.
How much ice does Chicago get?
We could be more prepared by buying fleets of snow plows and salt spreaders that would very rarely be used, but would be a huge economic burden to purchase, maintain, and store. We could also maintain huge stockpiles of salt, which is corrosive to anything that comes into contact with it, such as your car or the rebar in roads and bridges. Or we could deal with the ice as best as we can when an event like this happens every 30 years or so. Life’s full of tradeoffs, and DOTs make decisions like these based on benefit/cost analyses.
KF please report on there being 0 water interruptions in Jackson! Need some positive news for JXN water spread around! We gotsta keep Ted!!
Snow and ice are not the same thing dumbasses.
