Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced today that 38-year- old Avery Bankston has been found guilty of First-Degree Murder in the brutal killing of his cellmate, 50-year-old, Tyrone Wilson. Bankston was a pretrial detainee at the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department Raymond Detention Center in Raymond, Mississippi. In the midnight hours of February 23, 2023, deputies with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation responded to a call at the Raymond Detention Center. They found Tyrone Wilson deceased, lying on his back in the cell that he shared with Bankston. Surveillance video showed only Bankston and Wilson entering and exiting the cell. Footage captured a struggle under the cell door, visible movement on the floor, and a red-sleeved limb reaching from the cell. Later, Bankston is seen using a white cloth to clean the inside window and door of the cell.Bankston was being held on burglary charges at the time of the murder. He has had multiple run-ins with law enforcement dating back to 2010. After a jury trial, Bankston was found guilty of First-Degree Murder and will be serving a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. “For our system of law to work, prisons have to be safe. We will not tolerate our detention centers to become battlegrounds,” said District Attorney Owens. “Every act of violence behind bars will be prosecuted as aggressively as one on the street. We hope today’s verdict brings a measure of closure to the family of Tyrone Wilson in Illinois, who never had the chance to say goodbye to their loved one.”
