Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones will remain Interim JPD Chief as Mayor John Horhn seeks a new police chief.
Mayor Horhn appointed Sheriff Jones to the position on August 26. However, state law limits interim appointments to serve 90 days if the position requires a confirmation vote. As the Interim Chief's tenure neared the deadline, Mayor Horhn said he will submit Sheriff Jones to the City Council for confirmation as Interim Chief. Sheriff Jones issued the following statement:
“As we approach the 90-day mark of my appointment as Interim Chief of Police for the Jackson Police Department, I remain honored by the opportunity to serve in this capacity. I extend my sincere gratitude to Mayor John Horhn for his continued trust and support during this critical transitional phase for our department. In accordance with state law, the interim appointment cannot extend beyond 90 days. Therefore, I respectfully look forward to the City Council’s confirmation process, which will ensure continuity of leadership and compliance with governing statutes. I want to be clear: I am not a candidate or applicant for the permanent position of Chief of Police. My commitment remains steadfast—to lead with integrity, uphold public safety, and support the department with sustainability and professionalism. I fully support the Mayor’s ongoing efforts to conduct a transparent and thorough search for a permanent Chief of Police, a process I believe will reach its conclusion in the very near future. Until that time, both the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson Police Department continue to operate with excellence, thanks to the dedicated men and women who serve each agency with honor and distinction. Together, we remain focused on building trust, ensuring accountability, and delivering the highest standards of service to the people of Jackson and Hinds County."
The city hired a search firm for $65,000. The firm will present its recommendations by January 23, 2026.

He drawing pay from both agencies? You know, a friend asked me.
Glad Mayor Horhn is doing it the right way...unlike Harvey J when he selected his yes man chief....
Same thing will happen as always. The best candidate available nationwide was found right here among the Jackson troops and has been promoted to satisfy the local church folks and neighborhood gangs.
I hope they get a dollar tree madea who wears ridiculous problem glasses and makes Kamala harris sound coherant. JJ could use better headlines
65 K for a "search firm" ?
Typical Jackson schit.
BTW ... Tyree seems to prefer the blue JPD Chief''s uniform over his brown
High Sheriff's uniform. I guess blue makes his beard look better.
