Insurance Commish Mike Chaney issued the following statement.
Six juveniles accused of setting two separate fires in October 2023 have been convicted for their crimes. The names of the minors will not be released because of their ages but a description of each individual's charges and punishment is listed below.
The first fire was set on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the abandoned school before being extinguished by the Drew Volunteer Fire Department. The second fire was set on Sunday, October 15, 2023, and caused the structure to burn and collapse. The building was in the process of being added to the Historical Register in Sunflower County.

Boy, I am sure after these “wrist slaps” they will become model citizens. If you believe they will pay a dime of these fines, you need to work for Jackson’s mayor.
Wow, the judge sure showed them.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for those restitution payments.
Just another example of the total collapse of the judicial system in this country.
Just another sad example of poor parenting.
What else are you suggesting be done with 15-year-old hoodlums? In less than five years, they'll still be in Sunflower County - 8 miles up highway 49.
They should’ve just murdered somebody, then their sentences would’ve been so much lighter. Murder sentences ain’t nothing compared to effing around where an insurance company has an interest.
Probation and fines seem fair for what amounts to urban renewal. In a community where the land had value or the potential to appreciate, I might think that a speculator might have been glad of the fire so that the land might be put into productive use. In Drew, that building would simply be a drag on city resources until it was torn down. Making it a historical building would have just prolonged the process.
