Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
On Friday January 19, 2024, deputies with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Team made a traffic stop on a commercial vehicle transport on Interstate 20. During the stop deputies became suspicious of one of the vehicles on the transport.During a consensual search of the vehicle, the deputies along with the assistance sheriff’s department canines discovered approximately 130 pounds of high grade marijuana in duffel bags in the trunk of the vehicle.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the marijuana originated in California and was destined to a southern state. Law enforcement in that state has been contacted. This investigation is ongoing. The driver of the commercial vehicle was not charged and had no knowledge of the illegal marijuana being in one of the vehicles he was transporting. The street value of the marijuana is approximately $390,000.

$390,000 - bwa ha ha - nothing ever changes. LE managers love to inflate the value of illegal drugs in press releases, and include the weight of packaging.
But the goon squad would have gotten a confession out of the driver, including for the murder of Jimmy Hoffa.
So Voodoo was able to smell this driving down the highway and somehow alerted the Goon sitting in the median to pull him over? Doubtful. My guess is a tip came in from a cartel about some small fry who did pay up.
Why do the press releases always give explanations full of holes like what you would get from a 9 year old?
Oh no...Marijuana!!! I guess they had no real criminals to go after.
Who cares? It’s marijuana. At this point, the only people benefitting from a marijuana bust are the other in-state dealers. So ridiculous.
Resign Sheriff!!
Great job deputies!
The Dog should replace the sheriff! Higher moral ground
I’d be one pissed off truck driver. In some states, read Alabama, he’d probably be shackled.
$390,000/130 pounds = $3,000 a pound. I am out of touch with the current maryjane market status. Is that high quality dope? It does seem a bit pricy to me. That would be $6.60 a gram. If a joint were 0.32 grams, that would be 20 joints, or $.33 a joint, so maybe the market is down. This calculation s subject to my poor math skills and might be incorrect.
Legalize it.
I'm pretty sure your math is off and your decimal is misplaced, 11:22. No way 33 cents would buy a joint of $200 an oz weed.

$1000 a lb is a far more accurate number especially if it came from California. It hasn't been $3k in over 10 years. I haven't seen bad pot in over 15 years. There is no market for bad pot. It's all varying degrees of really good to excellent.
Oh no, marijuana!!!! The devil's lettuce!!!! I guess the RCSO didn't have any real criminals to go after.
Sub $200 ounces don't sound too bad for high grade flower? I'm not a patient or licensed to purchase said vegetable matter, but one would think you'd get a better deal when buying over 100 lbs at a time. Maybe I should pay a local provider and the health department to have the ability to check my local dispensary on that pricing.
11:22 - re-check your math.
Would one of you marijuana apologists please answer this riddle I've never.been able to solve: If tobacco smoke is a death sentence, why isn't marijuana smoke a killer too? First reader with the correct answer gets to live a life free of lung cancer.
once again, the donut squad happens to hit the right car to pull over. Amazing!!
@4:44
I couldn't tell you. I have never smoked cannabis. I prefer the wide variety of edibles.
Tell me this. What year do you think it is?
Serious question to the weed smokers: How and where (just generally; I don’t want a street address or phone number) do you get this weed? Used to be when I wore my hair long and had a beard, some guy (always a guy, never a girl) might sidle up beside me every so often and say quietly, “I bet you know where to get summat good shit, don’t you?” He might preface that with something more general, maybe ask me if a played in a band.
And I’d answer no, I don’t smoke grass, and he’d scuttle away like a late night cockroach surprised by the kitchen light.
Is that still the way it’s done, look for some guy who by his dress looks like he’s cool with it? Or do you drive up to some guy on a street corner just be, you know, hangin’ and you just have a feel for that sort of personage? Or do you call a coworker? An old friend from high school? Ex-wife’s old boyfriend? How do you know it’s a fair price, or do you not care the cost?
I’ve always wondered this and am genuinely interested in knowing.
4:44 it’s the nicotine , tar and other additives in cigarettes. A backyard Cannabis plant is harmless compared to any form of tobacco !
@7:42
Most people under 40 just buy edibles or vape. Nobody smokes plant matter anymore except boomers.
@7:42 pool hall, barber ( yes he knows white/black old/ young), gas station Co workers . etc. or just follow the aroma. In 50 years I ‘ve had a problem occasionally . Usually in August and November . ( harvest and elections )
How does a car on a transport truck look suspicious? Perhaps the subject vehicle had a yellow bumper sticker saying "plants on board."
Seriously, one would think that the driver would at least inspect the trunks of the vehicles he or she is transporting.
4:44. I’ll bet it has to do with volume of smoke getting sucked down. Even if you are a huge pothead and take ten rips of the good stuff per day, still nothing compared to the average pack a day smoker. I’m not pro marijuana or anything but that is what I bet answer is.
All these commenters that are against the sherif yet post about “real” criminals…. So you want the Sherries Office to selectively enforce the law and only enforce real laws and investigate real crimes?
Can’t have it both ways.
6:37am
It's possible dope mules get ratted out earlier in their I-20 trip, but Rankin County Sherrif deputies are known for no nonsense arrest, confiscation and prosecution, without permissive prosecutors, so Texas alerts Rankin Co with a specific bolo. Good on Rankin Co!
4:44: Remember a few years ago when we called nearly everything fake news? Cigarette smoking causing lung cancer is just more fake news! Don't believe the liberal news media!!
11:22 - did you say 33 cents a joint? I think you meant 33 dollars a joint.
@9:16 - do you believe in the tooth fairy too?
P.S. are you a member of the goon squad?
Sheriff, resign, your citizens don’t trust or want you here! Either you were incompotent by not knowing what was going on in your department or you were complicit in the crime. Either way if you had honor you would go. if you are a psychopathic criminal, then i suspect you will try to stay. like a mafia boss.
all other rankin county criminals, whether judges, supervisors, etc, run. the light of justice will be shining on you, the ungodly. have you no shame?
6:37 - I am told the officer making the initial stop wondered why a vehicle worth about $300 was being shipped cross country at a cost over $1000. Also, closer inspection revealed the trunk lock on the suspect vehicle had been glued shut. That's when Voodoo was called in. Good work, guys!
