Governor Tate Reeves issued the following statement on Facebook.
Today, we highlighted the hundreds of millions of dollars in state spending on critical infrastructure like roads, water, and bridges that we’ve signed recently. I also just announced a few decisions to veto spending. I’ll outline them here:
First, we vetoed $14 million in golf course spending. I’ve been trying for a long time to get the state out of the golf course business. One of these projects was for a golf course that we already gave to another entity. The other was to revive a closed golf course in Jackson that is surrounded by three other publicly accessible golf courses within five miles. It’s just not a good investment when we have so many other critical needs.
We vetoed $2 million of state taxpayer money for the defunct planetarium. The Jackson city council actually made a similar decision recently. I think the reason is simple. Jackson needs investment in safety. We need more police, not planetarium spending that has already proven to be wasteful. When we get that fully funded, we can consider luxury items.
I vetoed some spending that is simply not state taxpayers’ responsibility: a privately-owned pool, green space around a federal courthouse, city office upgrades, and a parking lot for a convention center that the state gave up long ago in order to end a losing investment. We gave it up for this express reason: to avoid putting you on the hook for these types of expenses. I also vetoed some money that would have gone to private interests that are better served in existing state programs that have accountability and oversight—not earmarks.
Want to make sure you know why we make these decisions! It always makes people, even my friends, angry when we can’t spend on everything they want. But it’s important to be responsible with the money because it doesn’t belong to politicians—it is yours.
Kingfish note: The Governor provided a list of some of the items vetoed.
* $1 million for a scenic river development for a golf course
* $250,000 for Briarwood Pool
* $500,000 to Greenville for green space around the federal courthouse
* $1 million to Pascagoula for renovation of city offices
* $1 million to build a parking lot at the Jackson Convention Center
* $50,000 to a Rise and Shine in Copiah County
* $13.2 million for golf course and other attractions at Lefleur's Bluff
* $2 million for Jackson planetarium

I’m shocked that the Governor, who has been attacked by the Jackson mayor, did this. Shocked!
This statement and the vetos are proof the governor gets it. They are also in complete alignment with the major ethics reform package he has proposed in the wake of the TANF scandal.
If the legislature wants to see a really mad and well spoken governor all they need to do is fight Tate's newly proposed ethics reform package.
Smart move to reject a golf course site that has been a failure since the get go and would have 60 or 70 just play 9. Jackson Muni should be a good example on HOW NOT to run a golf course. Ol Tater slapping them down left and right.
Well, lying about the state not paying water bills over and over to the New York Times, PBS, CNN, and numerous other media outlets doesn't help.
We all know Harvard Boy is gonna cry racism and MSM does not care about factual reporting.
Its a shame the voters don't demand better in Jackson and instead have to rely on the Governor to slap Chuck's greedy hands.
Go Governor go! You are on a great roll! Keep that veto pen handy!
"I vetoed some spending that is simply not state taxpayers’ responsibility" - really surprised not to see Trey Lamar's $150k for his children's private school's capital campaign on the veto list. (not)
Earn that raise Tater but do not forget it isn't you that struggles to pay their bills on state salary. Great job on this veto either way.
Yo Chowke, you may want to write this down: "Paybacks are a bitch, bitch."
I haven't been a fan of Tate Reeves, but this was well done. Thank you, Governor! Also, I live in Copiah County, and have never heard of Rise and Shine. What is it?
If only the Convention Center downtown had a parking lot, then it would be a massive success.
KF, good point about the water. All of these projects would have never been done to completion and it just another way for a Jackson hustler to extort some more money and do nothing. See Farrish St for an example. And Tate is correct. Jackson needs a lot more than a new golf course or planetarium.
Also, 11:57 Trey Lamar is a douchebag.
@1204 - yo' state salary got raised as well, just doesn't take a specific bill to do it. Don't know what job you (probably aren't) doing, but that SEC Squared adjustment is pretty damned hefty.
And it is in effect today. Not two years from now
Meanwhile John Bell just help cut the ribbon on a 50 million dollar plan to clean up the lakes in Baton Rouge that brings more recreation and tourist to Baton Rouge and the state. If you want to make money you have to spend money.
Like him or not, Tate appears to be really freakin smart - all this crap will play really well with the masses.
The biggest beef with Tate is his fence-straddling on a few major issues (it was going to change - Tate dithered/failed to lead) and medical marijuana (he should have championed the cause).
Oh well, hopefully this means Jackson leadership and State leadership can eventually get on same page and create some momentum around these parts.
Please provide mailing address for the governors re-election fund.
Med dope won't cost Reeves enough votes to move the needle even -1%. Get real.
12:30 : Gallo Show never said a word about state salaries other than the big wigs hoss. I've earned the right to delegate while I watch. Funny, UMMC CNA'S etc....didn't get a raise but whatever....you the man.
Tate just bought his re-election without spending a dime.
So everyone is supporting MS governors now even though the last one was involved with stolen welfare money?! Also the Russell C. Davis Planetarium was one of my favorite childhood memories. Clinton public schools took us their on field trips every year! Those experiences help benefit young children including those with little money. Everyone is not fortunate to take their kids to Orange Beach, San Destin and the various mini beaches on HWY 30A. Jackson needs more cultural activites/outlets for children and not investing in that will continue the cycle of juvenile crime.
Wait, is the LeFleur’s Bluff thing he veto'ed the same project Delbert was just promoting or is this something different?
https://www.wlbt.com/2022/04/12/live-expansion-lefleurs-bluff-include-golf-course/
These are good moves and appear to be principled moves until you start to notice the ones that he didn't veto. Gulfport hospital gets money, but UMMC doesn't. Trey Lamar and other unconstitutional private school projects - still funded. Pay raises for himself and other elected officials - not vetoed.
That's not principled leadership. That's political pandering disguised as principled leadership.
On the other hand... The current Jackson leadership will screw anything up, but we need a vibrant capitol city, so somebody needs to step up with a plan that can get all the public and private support to make projects happen. The LeFleur's Bluff project didn't strike me as a Lumumba project either, but it seems like the state should step in for 5%, not 75%.

This shit wasn't about being smart or "fiscally conservative". It was personal and petty. The things listed here, that he vetoed, were in areas he lost, the one item he vetoed for Pascagoula was to keep people off of the trail regarding his level of petty. Jackson County still received $8.5 million in special projects, even with the one item he vetoed!
He only governs the parts of Mississippi that voted for him. His actions and the legislation he signs are proof.
1:00 - you just gave the explination to your ignorance. Your sole source of information is Paul Gallo.
Thanks. Makes it easy to know the IG level of those one communicates with.
And, BTW, those nurses you are talking about got a raise as well. But obviously Gallot didn't talk about them either.
@1:07 horse shit. The kids around here are LOST. The blame lies ONLY with their parents (or lack thereof).
1:13 - one and the same. Evidently Delbert didn't bother to invite Tate to the big announcement but felt that since He was the most important leader in the state, no need to send Tate an invite.
1:31 : Idk, the stuff in Jackson would have taken the money and the projects would have never been done or used the money and came up short , Robert Trent Jones design and only 13 million ? Hmmmmmmm. You know it...I know it and he knows it.
Tate win = Mississippi Lost.
FIRST THINGS FIRST!!! Thank you, Gov. Reeves, for these common sense priorities. Now....prove your sincerity and wisdom by utilizing these otherwise frivilous monies on necessities which affect our quality of life here in our state.
A 78 year old native Mississippian
Thank you Governor Reeves for slashing the silly stuff. Spending for LeFleur's golf and Uranus are light years away, if ever, as long as police, infrastructure, JPD and JPS rot.
Lil Choke, it's PIE simple, you punka$$ fake mayor:
P: Police (more and better police, detention space)
I: Infrastructure (Water, Sewer, Streets)
E: Education (Choice and Vouchers)
P.I.E. Don't waste a dime on anything else.
Enough with the posts Parker. How much BS can you post about your boss in one day?
I live in South Mississippi.
Idisgusted that some of the taxes I pay will not be used to build a flower bed in Greenville.
So according to 1:31, because Tate does not give money to an elected official that has been an utter failure in every aspect and demonstrably incompetent with city finances, it must mean Tate is vengeful toward Democrats.
Got it.
I guess I applaud you for not blatantly using the race card.
a zoo would be a better use of the old lefleurs bluff golf course…
Who's Trey Lamar, and what's the deal with the private school taxpayer dollars are funding? I was out of the loop, I reckon.
If the state is going to have parks, then Lefleurs Bluff is a good investment. This is a state park, not a city park. Its one of the only safe and decent rec areas in the capitol. I agree, this was petty.
I'd like to see the list of pet projects that he did NOT veto.
"The state of the Tate" (to quote Marshall Ramsey) is good.
12:30 - a 3% pay raise, not across the board, that only went to a limited # of employees is hefty? While we are in the midst of 8% inflation? Yea ok. SEC2 is a joke.
@1:07
?? Taxpayers should fund the $13.2M golf course, $1M for Convention Center debacle, $2M for Planetarium upgrade, $1/4M for a pool upgrade while Water, Sewer, Crime and JPS schools all suck?
Would the same $16.45M for core responsibilities of Jackson government (Police, Infrastructure, Education) have been funded and not vetoed? Maybe.
Is this the same guy that had the state build an exit from Lakeland (highway 25) to his subdivision (Dogwood)? Ok, Tate.
I can't disagree with some of these vetoes (and lack enough information to comment on others), but I strongly disagree with the veto of the money for the Briarwood Pool. Yes, it's privately owned (rescued from foreclosure by a dedicated group of individuals who raised enough money for the rescue), but open to and operated for, the public. It's where JPS's interscholastic swim team practices. Is there another publicly accessible pool in Jackson? The $250,000 appropriation was to make the pool handicap accessible, so that segment of the public could enjoy swimming and picnicking in the adjacent shady area. If Tater was so concerned about spending the public's money on a private enterprise why didn't he veto the $10 million appropriated for private schools. Reeves is flat out wrong on the pool.
@1:31, He only governs the parts of Mississippi that voted for him. His actions and the legislation he signs are proof.
And???
@1:07 PM broke the code. If kids don't go to a planetarium they become thugs. Those planetariums make the kids all starry-eyed.
How about using some of that money to move the capital city out of Jackson?
@1:31 PM [AND] there ain't enough Donkeycrats remaining in Jackson to swing a statewide election. Jackson could vote 95% for a candidate other than Reeves and it won't get it done. Population matters and Jackson has its voters jamming the exits to all points on the compass out of town. Cheers!
Build a golf course in Jackistan and the thugs will 'jack your golf cart.
So everyone is supporting MS governors now even though the last one was involved with stolen welfare money?!
Won't be any blow back on any GOPer beyond possibly White no matter how much huffing, puffing and hyperventilation we hear from the Barksdalers.
Thought that there was a Municipal Golf Course by the Zoo. Why would we need another? Use the money for more appropriate causes like not tearing the shit out of my vehicles and having toilets that actually flush into a working sewer system.
There is a reason you can't find or have a public pool in Jackson. City can't RUN ANYTHING correctly. That park and "golf course" has never been worth a shit...not in my 50 years anyway. Running and maintaining a golf course is not easy.....finding solid employees is even harder. Doesn't matter who owns them. There is a reason why some of these places charge you 70 a round on a weekday !
The Governor can veto on a line item in an Appropriations bill which requires a 3/5 majority vote in both the House and the Senate.
HB - 1353 was a general bill, which requires only A MAJORITY of both the House (62 votes) and in the Senate (27) votes. The Governor cannot line item veto in a GENERL BILL!
Senate vote : 48 yeas
1 nay
2 not voting
1 present
House vote: 110 yeas
3 nays
8 absent or not voting
1 present
This is what happens when your Mayor touts loudly to the press that he plans to spend barely over 1/2 of Jackson's ARPA money on his billion dollar infrastructure problems. In a recent interview John Horhn all but called him a dumbshit over the spending plan and posturing.
Fat Melvin is in full meltdown over in Twitworld. He's got alot to melt.
2:22
Is that you, Dilbert?
Planetarium boondoggle price tag increased 33% in just two years while the project's scope kept growing and growing.
Looks like several dignitaries were a little presumptuous at the recent ground breaking ceremony at Lefleur’s Bluff. As the old saying goes: Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
Attn 3:45. Get a life and quit trying to impress anyone other than yourself of your state governmental knowledge.
I'm not a Tate cheerleader, but thank god someone finally stood up the Labumbles clowns.
Its time someone said no to the endless waste of money insane tourism pipe dreams.
The Legislature has to follow the rules. HB 1353 was a transfer bill (general). Someone has got to know what they are.
Never understood Dogbert's new golf course. Does he really think golfers are going to tolerate the smell of raw sewage running down the Eubanks to the Pearl?
I can’t wait until Phillip Gunn whips Tater Tot at the polls.
The idea of Jackson having/maintaining a golf course is beyond comical.
Planetarium: sad, but also far beyond Jackson's capacity. It is a luxury.
I am over the sadness. At this point, I (and nearly all of us) are watching with morbid fascination as Jackson just gets worse and worse. It is on par with cities in India or Africa, with kids riding 4-wheelers in traffic and just being a generally lawless place. Also fascinating is that some people who actually could leave continue to choose to stay. Poor decision, to say the least.
3:45 are you saying they about to kick Tates ass?
You had me at personal and petty. Just what pork did he NOT line item veto?
Our RINO U.S. Senator Cindy-Hyde smith has chimed in saying she support the golf course, but of course she has become the champion of earmark spending on crappy projects. She should switch to the Donkey Party.
I would think experiences in a classroom via virtual reality would make a planetarium obsolete. Plus the expense to bus kids there from all over the state is ridiculous.
Why am I not surprised that the racist white governor of Mississippi is disenfranchising African-Americans?
How much state money has been spent in Rankin and Madison counties in the last decade? I’d say a S**T ton. Taxpayers in Mize and Water Valley don’t see much value in overpasses and venues in Tates stompin grounds. But they get through every session.
@1:42
You reference ignorance but your grammatical errors make me wonder if you know the meaning….
Kinda funny looking back at all the JLJ and millennial NEJXN white folks gleefully posting all their pictures from taters inauguration all over social media. Wonder what they think now?
5:11, the sewage comes in south of there. But keep typing your ignorance. Now, if the state wanted to put a big park at the termination of McDowell Road or Siwell Road, you might have a point.
PS...if it is stinky on the west bank, it is stinky on the east bank. Thus, the Stankin Rankin references. Yalls side of the river is just as Sh***y.
Yea, looks like he has some work to do…check this out:
https://resistthemainstream.org/series-of-polls-show-the-11-most-popular-governors-all-have-one-thing-in-common/?utm_source=telegram#
“Jackson needs investment in safety. We need more police, not planetarium spending that has already proven to be wasteful. When we get that fully funded, we can consider luxury items.”
Okay, you feckless, dough-boy “Governor,” since investment in public safety and police funding in Jackson are so important to you that you’re willing to override your Legislature (which is hardly a liberal bunch), what has your administration done to help funding for those needs?
Even Bryant wasn’t as bad as you.
Governor don't want no competition for his donors' projects in Rankin
State: We’ve got to combat brain drain in MS.
Tate: Let me veto this bill that would create an activity area young college grads could see themselves being able to go do if they moved to the area.
What about the claymation museum at iron horse that Tate's biggest donor (wink wink) "created". Hell, what about the whole iron horse project funded by state bonds?
Can he just pick and choose what gets funded?
Why do we have a legislature if they don’t have a say in where money goes?
NE Jackson Hotty toddy crowd funds rate more than anyone does. Yates family members Sanderson family member’s cal-Maine owner doctors lawyers all are guilty of this while living in me Jackson and Tate says screw ya!
6:00 PM
Get a new screed. That one has been beaten to death.
I heard he Governor also vetoed Richards Disposal because the trash hasn't been picked up at the governor's mansion.
The kiddee Mayor will just veto Tater's veto. Right? Right?
@8:14 PM...
I've seen that "museum" at Iron Horse Grill in Jackson, and I found a story online about the "Jackson Redevelopment Authority" guaranteeing a loan, but did public money go into that?
Interesting that Stump Reeves didn't veto the huge pay raise for himself and other statewide officials??? Talk about money for which better use could be found.
7:28 for the win!! Chowke is such incompetent loser but he thinks he’s the smartest person in the room!
Go Tater Go!!
Why should citizens who pay taxes and tax producing counties have to fund the failed policies of Dim-O-Krat (emphasis being on DIM) run sh*tholes.
What was once a successful city full of venues to eat at, take in the latest movies, enjoy a walk with the family through a safe and well run city zoo and clean city parks and golf courses, has now been reduced to a welfare crime infested location.
Now to combat this all you butt hurt "progressives" can just volunteer to throw, say another 40% in taxes to fix "your fuk'n" problem since you just love having the "Townhall Master" as a imitation mayor!!
Yes, LeFleur's Bluff is a state park. The same state park that continually receives a lion's share of available money budgeted for parks, the step child of DWFP, a nice gathering place for the execs and field officers. The same LeFleur's Bluff that floods (Pearl River) most every year (sometimes twice) while all others languish and rot. That's why the inept Director of MDWFP was 'nudged' into retirement two months ago, over-night.
So, yes, let's put the zoo at LeFleur's Bluff and fund the building of an ark.
@11:06 I strongly recommend that you get back on your meds.
@5:54am
"Can he just pick and choose what gets funded? Why do we have a legislature if they don’t have a say in where money goes?"
Because the legislature is supposed to cooperate in partnership with the Governor and his administration and representatives of the people, and the MS Supremes confirmed Tate has line-item authority. Otherwise, the legislators would never be held in check like they needed to be for the last 20+ years.
11:19 : So the truth to you means someone needs medication. I bet you are a hoot at Thanksgiving. Do they have to make separate dressing without celery for you ? You complain about the cranberry sauce being from the can ?
11:19 & 1:49 (same person) You really need to take your meds and rest for a while (that means no internet). It will be ok. I promise.
State owned golf courses operate in the negative. Period. They are a waste of money even when they are really nice.
11:19, you seriously should consider shock treatments.....
Sounds like you are one of the butthurt morons who can't fathom the truth about the conditions of jackson. I'd imagine you're the product of some liberal arts propaganda institute.
It must be a b*tch to get up in the morning and wondering if water will come out of the faucet when you turn it on or to see who will win the neighborhood lottery as to when Richard's will pick up your garbage!!!
Your imitation mayor is a crook and liar, but you're too fuk'n stupid to comprehend those facts.
Too bad you weren't around when jackson was a CLEAN & SAFE place to raise a family, but by all means, continue residing in your progressive sh*thole of a city. The decent folks who were smart enough to leave don't want you in our neighbor hood and bringing the stench and sub human behavior with you.
Also, 3:07 the post at 1:49 is that of another person who knows how you progressive twerps just hate it when the truth smacks you closed eyes!!!
Now go on down to your favorite Fondren cry'n bar and have a Shirley Temple or 12, cause the sad reality is tomorrow when you wake up, nothing will have changed......you'll still be a butt hurt cry'n liberal.
@1:31pm "This shit wasn't about being smart or "fiscally conservative". It was personal and petty. Well, the places that voted for him tend to be places that are more functional. Jackson needs a lot of outside help because its leadership and voters chased off so many tax paying citizens. But they can't be trusted to do anything productive with money. Jackson County is generally a functioning county with mostly functioning municipalities. No Mississippi county is above corruption, but there's a pretty decent chance that money invested there will be used for its intended purpose and generate some kind of return. Those are the areas that should be getting money.
