This statement and the vetos are proof the governor gets it. They are also in complete alignment with the major ethics reform package he has proposed in the wake of the TANF scandal.

If the legislature wants to see a really mad and well spoken governor all they need to do is fight Tate's newly proposed ethics reform package.

Smart move to reject a golf course site that has been a failure since the get go and would have 60 or 70 just play 9. Jackson Muni should be a good example on HOW NOT to run a golf course. Ol Tater slapping them down left and right.

Clinton public schools took us their on field trips every year! Those experiences help benefit young children including those with little money. Jackson needs more cultural activites/outlets for children and not investing in that will continue the cycle of juvenile crime.

These are good moves and appear to be principled moves until you start to notice the ones that he didn't veto. Gulfport hospital gets money, but UMMC doesn't. Trey Lamar and other unconstitutional private school projects - still funded. Pay raises for himself and other elected officials - not vetoed.

On the other hand... The current Jackson leadership will screw anything up, but we need a vibrant capitol city, so somebody needs to step up with a plan that can get all the public and private support to make projects happen. The LeFleur's Bluff project didn't strike me as a Lumumba project either, but it seems like the state should step in for 5%, not 75%.

The things listed here, that he vetoed, were in areas he lost, the one item he vetoed for Pascagoula was to keep people off of the trail regarding his level of petty. Jackson County still received $8.5 million in special projects, even with the one item he vetoed!

I can't disagree with some of these vetoes (and lack enough information to comment on others), but I strongly disagree with the veto of the money for the Briarwood Pool. Yes, it's privately owned (rescued from foreclosure by a dedicated group of individuals who raised enough money for the rescue), but open to and operated for, the public. It's where JPS's interscholastic swim team practices. Is there another publicly accessible pool in Jackson? The $250,000 appropriation was to make the pool handicap accessible, so that segment of the public could enjoy swimming and picnicking in the adjacent shady area. If Tater was so concerned about spending the public's money on a private enterprise why didn't he veto the $10 million appropriated for private schools. Reeves is flat out wrong on the pool.

I am over the sadness. At this point, I (and nearly all of us) are watching with morbid fascination as Jackson just gets worse and worse. Well, the places that voted for him tend to be places that are more functional. Jackson needs a lot of outside help because its leadership and voters chased off so many tax paying citizens. But they can't be trusted to do anything productive with money. Jackson County is generally a functioning county with mostly functioning municipalities. No Mississippi county is above corruption, but there's a pretty decent chance that money invested there will be used for its intended purpose and generate some kind of return. Those are the areas that should be getting money.
