State of the Pandemic in Mississippi

The pandemic continues to crash Mississippi's health care system.   A combination of Mississippi having the lowest vaccinated (37%) and fattest population combined to turn Mississippi into the Northern Italy of 18 months ago.  However, there is some cause for hope.  The federal government is sending in the medical cavalry (bring Hawkeye & Hot Lips but leave Frank behind, please).  The death rate is much lower than it was in the earlier surges and the transmission rate finally fell below 1.0.  Posted below is  a quick review of the Covid-19 situation as it stands today in Mississippi.

Rt Factor

The Health Department didn't mention it nor did the Governor but Mississippi may finally be catching a break on the Delta surge.  The transmission rate, Rt, fell below 1.0 a week ago. It was 0.81 yesterday.  However, it will probably be several days or weeks before the Delta surge subsides.  Rt fell below 1.0 at the height of the January and July 2020 surges.  JJ used Rt to predict on August 14 the surge would worsen.  Such is still the case.  Keep in mind the Rt chart posted below is a model.  However, one can look at the pattern of the chart to see how earlier surges correlated to the rise and fall in Rt.  Link to Rt site and more info.

Rt is falling pretty rapidly in the Jackson metro area.

Hinds: 0.64

Madison: 0.81

Rankin: 0.98

Deaths

Deaths climbed to a moving 7-day average of 27 deaths.  However, it is still far below the 47 deaths per day seen at the peak of the January surge even though this surge is crashing the health care system.

Dr. Byers gravely announced at the Governor's press conference yesterday that Mississippi suffered its worst day in terms of Covid-19 deaths.  That statement is not exactly true.  Mississippi indeed reported 111 deaths yesterday.  This is the scoreboard that made the rounds in the media and social media yesterday.

However, read the fine print underneath "new deaths."

70 deaths took place over 8 weeks.  That translates into 70 deaths over 56 days - 1.25 per day.  41 occurred over 4 days - 10 per day.  That is definitely much worse but much better than making it sound as if 111 died in a day or two.  MSDH has gotten real bad lately about reporting large batches of deaths measured over several days, weeks, or even months together.  Doing so gives a false impression.  The death rate is actually much better during this surge.  It can be argued whether that is because Delta is less deadly, the vaccine works, or there are better therapies available.  However, the somewhat misleading huge numbers pour fear into an already-frightened populace.

Hospitalizations

Mississippi's health care system continues to crash under the weight of Covid-19.  Hospitalizations have plateaued between 1,623 and 1,667 since August 16.  However, they are far above the January peak of 1,444. ICUs remain at their peak of 484 patients while 342 patients are on vents, remaining at record highs.

90% of the hospitalized are unvaccinated patients.

A UMMC tweet provides a glimpse at how local hospitals are faring during the pandemic:

As of 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25, UMMC has 131 confirmed or suspected inpatient COVID-19 cases, with 108 adults and 23 children. Of the COVID positive patients, 68.1% are unvaccinated, 13.8% are fully vaccinated and 7.5% are not eligible for the vaccine (under 12 years old).

St. Dominic tweeted yesterday:

Earlier surges spared children, but Delta turned out to be a devil for the children in the Magnolia State. There are three children on life support and seven in critical care.  The second child in a week died yesterday.  Six children have died from Covid-19 since the pandemic began in Mississippi. Hospitals report the child population of Covid-19 patients is increasing.

Vaccinations

1.13 million Mississippians are fully vaccinated.  86,051 people were vaccinated last week, the most since April 17.  Vaccination among ethnic groups continue to mirror the state's population.  57% of the washed are white while 37% are black. Nearly 20,000 Mississippians have received a booster shot.  Vaccination Report.

Madison County leads the state at 51% while Rankin County is 40% and Hinds is 43%.  Neshoba and Smith counties bring up the rear at 23% and 24%.

The charts show a simple pattern: Getting the shot increases a patient's chances of staying out of the hospital.... or the morgue.

MSDH is going to increase the number of Covid-19 testing sites as well as the hours of operations for other sites.  See p.4 in the first set of documents posted below from the press conference today.  The Health Department is going to open "pop-up" vaccination sites in communities with low vaccination rates.  Vaccines will be provided to the homebound as well.*  They are available to anyone over 12 years old and no ID or documents are required.  Just show up, take the shot, and get a card.

*  If you are homebound and need assistance getting your COVID-19 vaccination, send an e-mail to COVIDHomebound@msdh.ms.gov or call the Hotline at 877-978-6453

Hawkeye and Hot Lips.
Excuse me?

Deaths tend to lag hospitalizations, which lag infections. If we have just now plateaued then deaths have not peaked yet.

Someone with resources & time needs to see how many hospitals in MS are on diversion.

Why aren't previously infected, or re-infections tracked or reported on?

It would seem that people aren't getting it twice. Therefore, why do previously infected need the "vaccine"?

There are literally no mentions of this in all the gEt tHe ShOt press briefings.

What is the latest on how many more times it may mutate? How many more “variants” of this mess can we expect to deal with in the coming months (or years, even)?

Anonymous said...

It's hard to predict how any more times the virus will mutate when half the nation is hellbent to ensure they are living in viral petri dishes.

Anonymous said...

@10:50 "the latest on how many times it may mutate" is simple, infinite. That's what it does, just like rats, people, whatever you got, the environment changes and it tries to survive. There's not much to "it," so there's not much to change.

The virus, like many people, is just trying to make it from payday to payday, along the way, it causes havoc, e.g.,

There are three children on life-support and seven in critical care. The second child in a week died yesterday. Six children have died from Covid-19 since the pandemic began in Mississippi. Hospitals report the child population of Covid-19 patients is increasing.

The more unvaccinated people, the easier it is for the virus to spread to relatively innocent, vulnerable folks, kids, old people -- guys like me who don't really care about being "mind controlled" by nanochips, etc., but just want to survive a while longer.

Wow! What a nutty extrapolation. I think what you just told us (breaking news) is that not everybody who contracts Wuhan will wind up in the hospital (much less, right away) and not all of those who do wind up there will die.

Ima write this down!

Better Than Ever said...

@10:50

There's been some serious work done on answering this question. We are seeing the same mutations crop up again and again, which is a good thing.

The mutations are not unlimited. This is a small virus, much smaller than the flu, so there's simply not a whole lot to work with.

And if the spike changes too much... then it will lose its functionality (cell entry).

In short, if we will take advantage of the excellent vaccines we have then there's every indication we can put this behind us. We have the tools but aren't using them.

Better Than Ever said...

@7:50

It's a reminder than 7 day cases are 10% over what they were 10 days ago. Hospitals are starting to break now/today. 10 more days of gain is not good. Then deaths increase beyond that. And how many die that don't have to? We are doing a piss poor job of being our brother's keeper.

Everything is mutating, including the so-called facts surrounding the virus and the vaccines. Begin with the origin of the "Wuhan Virus' or Corona Virus which became Covid-19 or Delta Variant and so on. The vaccines would prevent the virus...no, prevent it's spread...no, prevent death...no, prevent hospitalization....no, decrease symptoms...no, you need a booster for full effect...well, maybe multiple boosters...no,...

Bottom line, the only real authority on the virus is the virus itself. We are all just observers learning as we go.

Against the Delta variant? Yes, you're going to get infected. It's only a matter of when. The vaccine was created for the Alpha variant. It's like taking the 2020 flu shot for the 2021 flu season.

Does it still help prevent severe outcomes? Yes, the Israel data is proving to still be effective against the Delta variant and severe outcomes.

“A fool despises his father’s instruction.”

"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice"

"As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly"

“The mouth of a fool brings ruin near."

“A person’s own folly leads to their ruin.”

"Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him."

But I'd never say Robert Foster or his type are fools, cause "whosoever shall. say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire."

A unvaxxed person who gets Covid has at least a 8 month immunity which is better than at least 4 of the vaccines. Why these briefings aren't speaking about this fact is mind boggling. And why isn't the good Doc mentioning the fact that a daily dose of D3 ...ZINC...Vit C actually HELPS the vaccine work better. You know ,cause they are immune boosters. Covid is real but so is the money machine behind the vax. Demonizing the healthy who simply do not want the vax is wrong on many levels with the proof science is hiding. You just have to look.

The vaccine is relatively effective at mitigating symptoms. What it is 100% ineffective at is stopping the spread. A vaccinated person is just as likely to transmit COVID as an unvaccinated person.

Source: Dr. Rochelle Walensky, CDC Director-

"But what [the vaccine] can't do anymore is prevent transmission."

The idea that this is a pandemic of the unvaccinated is not only erroneous, it's downright nefarious.

Anonymous said...

"A vaccinated person is just as likely to transmit COVID as an unvaccinated person. "

No, Cletus, that's a lie. Almost ALL vaccines can see some breakthrough cases, as no vaccine is 100%.

What it does do is SLOW transmission, reduce transmission, or prevent transmission. The MATH behind that is herd immunity via vaccination.

Did you ask yourself, before you wrote that, as an example, WHY smallpox wasn't "eradicated" in 1796 with the development of a vaccination?

Or measles? Or any other disease you've probably been vaccinated against.

Master of the Obvious.

Here's troubling news for the AntiVaxxer Brigade:

"Fully vaccinated people who catch COVID-19 appear to be less infectious and clear the virus quicker than unvaccinated people, early research suggests"

Dr. Catherine Schuster-Bruce

And, they seldom go to the hospital (at taxpayer expense), much less die.
Viral loads drop in 3 days or less. Etc etc.

Which is, Cletus, what we've been fighting for the last year to year and a half.

"But what [the vaccine] can't do anymore is prevent transmission."

Read somewhere that there are 3 nasal vaccines in trials. It might explain why the vaccinated spread it. While the nasal vaccines fight the virus in the nose-pharynx, the vaccines delivered by injection fight it more when it gets to the lungs or rest of body. Thus it establishes a beachhead in the nose, etc and thus grows and spreads to others. Once it moves off that beachhead, then the vaccine causes the body to jump on it, hence the lower numbers of hospitalizations and deaths. Just a thought.

Anonymous said...

No, you do not know someone who has had Covid twice in 8 months. You might know someone who tested positive more than once. Go google why that would be. But a positive test does not equal a Covid infection.

Anonymous said...

9:39 It is unknown if some who are getting Delta had a mild version in 2020.

And, it's unclear if those vaccinated been immune until their immune level waned after 6 months or never reacted fully to their vaccination.

The lack of testing early on makes this murkier. And, those who do this kind of research as overwhelmed as the rest of the medical community.

There is plenty of competent research on a good mask properly worn, reducing the amount of exposure and that vaccines are as always, imperfect but safe and work to reduce serious illness and death.

There's a difference between a fact generated from an expert conducting research and some person with just enough knowledge and running numbers without a scientifically value sample or variable check of the validity of the variables considered.

"And the vaccine PER CDC no longer is working to prevent spread"

Flat out LIE.

CDC: "Vaccine breakthrough cases are expected. COVID-19 vaccines are effective and are a critical tool to bring the pandemic under control. However, no vaccines are 100% effective at preventing illness. Some fully vaccinated people will get sick, and some will even be hospitalized or die from COVID-19. However, there is evidence that vaccination may make illness less severe for those who are vaccinated and still get sick. The risk of infection, hospitalization, and death are all much lower in vaccinated compared to unvaccinated people.
More than 168 million people in the United States have been fully vaccinated as of August 16, 2021. Like with other vaccines, vaccine breakthrough cases will occur, even though the vaccines are working as expected. Asymptomatic infections among vaccinated people will also occur.
Current data suggest that COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the United States offer protection against most SARS-CoV-2 variants circulating in the United States. However, variants will cause some vaccine breakthrough cases."

"Variants will cause some vaccine breakthrough cases." AS ALWAYS. EXPECTED.

Stop lying about Vaccines "don't prevent spread." That's false, and misleading.

If you can't deal with ambiguity, big words like "maybe" (until DATA and EVIDENCE are compiled and analyzed), as adults do in life, run off as a scaredy cat and hide from cloth masks, shots, or other "scary" modern things (Well, modern since like 1796, but you cave dwellers might not have heard of electricity yet).

Anonymous said...

Even people who are saying the vaccine stops the spread are citing examples that prove precisely the opposite.

No one is denying that the vaccine helps with symptoms.

If you are vaccinated, you can still spread it to anyone else. Nothing anyone arguing otherwise has pointed to refutes this point.

There will be no data collected. The CDC announced in May that it would not collect or track breakthrough cases. A simple internet search with even using Google will verify that for you.

From the CDC Director in the White House press briefing one week ago which I will link so you can hear her words for yourself instead of some regurgitation of the disinformation you keep spreading from media and social media:
"Vaccine effectiveness against infection is decreasing over time. Anticipating further waning immunity and the ongoing Delta surge, we are preparing for a booster vaccine."

Yep, sure sounds like the CDC for sure is saying vaccines are preventing spread. You got me.

Additionally, the CDC Director goes on to state concerns about waning effectiveness against severe outcomes. ": "The data we will publish today and next week demonstrate the vaccine effectiveness against SARS-COVID-2 infection is waning and even though our vaccines are currently working well to prevent hospitalizations, we are seeing concerning evidence of waning vaccine effectiveness over time and against the Delta variant. Additionally, reports from our international colleagues, including Israel, suggest increased risk of severe disease amongst those vaccinated early. Given this body of evidence, we are concerned that the current strong protection against severe infection, hospitalization, and death could decrease in the months ahead, especially among those at higher risk or who were vaccinated earlier during the phases of our vaccination rollout.”

But, keep right on believing your are some superman because you got vaccinated and falsely accuse others of spreading misinformation when you are the one spreading misinformation. I will continue to believe the words coming directly from the CDC Director's mouth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciVGAPuruoQ&t=1050s

The British medical journal won't "retract" that because you're too stupid to understand it, hero.

Don't you understand that DELTA has MORE of a viral load than Alpha?

You get it, Cletus? Alpha came first, before vaccines. So, Delta is DIFFERENT in viral load, level of transmission, and could have been "more deadly." UK and India and now the US have Delta, almost exclusively.

Don't you hicks understand stuff presented to you?

So, Cletus, "Vaccinated" people AND unvaccinated people carry a HIGHER VIRAL LOAD because it's a variant, not because of the vaccine.

Duh, that's WHY, in part, it's MORE contagious.

Has NOTHING to do with people being vaccinated, EXCEPT they don't DIE from it or spread it as much.

And as has been constantly posted from recent studies, the vaccine protects you from serious injury or death, as designed and hoped and proven, as well as reducing DURATION and SEVERITY of illness IF (a rare occurrence) you happen to get a breakthrough infection. For this in Alpha, Delta and Lambda.

Duh. Forehead slapping duh folks.

Could it be that you don't understand a thing about what you are posting ?! Hmmmmmmm, nothing to wonder about. First, the increases reported are all or mostly all pediatric cases (and it is one the most common viruses in young children). While it can be serious in anyone, it normally isn't. But add COVID-related illnesses on top of it and it is just more load on an-already taxed immune system. As to it being caused by any of the vaccines, no. Just no.

It wasn’t that long ago that government officials were telling us that fully vaccinated individuals could remove their masks safely and return to normalcy because the vaccines were going to put an end to the pandemic.

Now we know that the government was wrong about that and once again the goalposts have been moved a little farther out telling us that the vaccines were never meant to do anything other than to minimize your chances of becoming deathly sick or hospitalized resulting in a new category of asymptomatic people walking around spreading the disease. Or people thinking they’ve got a cold in the summertime who are walking around spreading the disease.

I’m sure people who thought they were doing the right thing to protect others by becoming vaccinated are now devastated to learn they’ve actually infected others.

If the vaccines are only intended to minimize your symptoms it sounds like the government expects us all to catch this eventually as a means of ending the pandemic or else they’re just not yet telling us that coronavirus is never going to go away.

TWO, you can STILL get reinfected even after "natural immunity." Just like getting vaccinated, but it's also RARE.

THIRD, you might have a stroke, an amputation, or develop "Long Covid" getting that "natural immunity." Like getting paralyzed and intubated? Then, Covid's for you, buddy. I'll pass if at all possible.

So, same as getting a vaccine, your getting Covid (your second round of Covid, smart peoples' first) will probably be less severe.

So, do you want to be intubated, run up a million dollar hospital bill, be paralyzed from a stroke, or take a shot to get some immunity?

Wow. Tough decision.

One last problem. They note you still need a one shot VACCINE!!!!!!

“We continue to underestimate the importance of natural infection immunity … especially when [infection] is recent,” says Eric Topol, a physician-scientist at Scripps Research. “And when you bolster that with one dose of vaccine, you take it to levels you can’t possibly match with any vaccine in the world right now.”

GOSH. You antivaxxers can get "WAY MO BETTAH" immunity than us vaxxers IF you live and get a booster shot!!

Why? Because duh. Stuff we knew.

This does NOT suggest NOT getting vaccinated. It's science.

"8:24 .....Did you read the article posted by WAPT ? THE POINT WAS THAT THE HEALTH CARE WORKERS ARE at a loss as to why !! It's NOT a summer virus !!!!"

A "summer" virus (! ! !)? Sorry, I missed the class on "The Vacation Plans of Viruses" in every single year of my college career, freshman year through med school. As did every single person I ever met then or since, because it wasn't offered. Please, educate me on where viruses spend their summer (or even winter) vacations. Viruses aren't rednecks who make 4 week-long pilgrimages a year to Disneyworld and at least a couple to the Redneck Riviera. The habits of the hosts (i.e., you) do play a part in the transmission rate - see, oh I don't know, something like SARS-CoV-2 and COVID for an example - but viruses do not take vacations - see, oh I don't know, something like SARS-Cov-2 and COVID.

For the rational, yes, the infection rate of certain viruses are typically higher and lower during certain seasons but it isn't due to or a direct causation by the virus' vacation plans, it is due to and caused by the seasonal habits of the hosts.

PS - the next time you need a doctor, call WAPT and ask them if they can a reporter around to fix you up. Or maybe ask your FaceTwatterTok friends where all the cool viruses are going this summer and don't go there.

Nice to see Bloomberg of all sources running a science based factual article for a change.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
