Flashback Friday

Today's edition of Flashback Friday steps back into the past, the dreadful past.  Flashback Friday shows all of the past - the good, the bad, and in this case, the ugly.  However, history is meant to be studied, not ignored and that applies to the the front page of the June 17, 1923 edition of the Daily Clarion-Ledger that is posted below. The newspaper published a great deal of racist content back in the day and this Sunday newspaper was no exception. Consider yourself warned.

If you can't read it, here are the lowlights of what is published.

* Front page celebrates major Klan meeting

* Headline refers to an Asian person as "chink"

* Read the "Harmony Among the Races" story

* Last but certainly not least is "My Mammy's Philosophy".  That was a daily feature at the time.  Sho'nuff.

I love they posted about having a great spiritual revival over at Galloway, while they are celebrating so many men becomng Klansman. lol What were people thinking back then.

Kingfish, what's the point in posting this? Fan the flames? This just gives too many people the opportunity to say "See, nothing's changed," which, of course, couldn't be further from the truth!

What was the (per capita) murder rate back then?
btw in 1923 you could easily own a machine gun and silencer!
No ATF gymnastics involved!

So, Congress was struggling with taxation and immigration in 1923? Almost 100 years later, and they still don't know how to manage either.

The current Clarion Ledger is hardly a shadow of what it once was....
Thank God.

So, ignoring all the racist articles, which are awful but not surprising for the 1920s, every other article is about prohibition, rum runners, illegal stills, etc. And folks thought prohibition was going to work. Now on to the medical marijuana debate at current times. There is nothing new under the sun.

That may explain why Jackson is the second (behind Baron Rouge) most dangerous city in the U.S.A.

There's not as much text in a current issue of the Clarion-Ledger as there is just on that front page.

12:44 is correct Kingfish. Why would post this crap? It serves no purpose other than to inflame those who believe Mississippi is still a symbol of the ignorance of the past. Nothing could be further from the truth but there are those who love to use postings like this to smear the incredible progress that has been made.

This is a jarring reminder that makes me so grateful we have progressed to embrace diversity.

Sadly, so many young people, who have never had to struggle and fight for equal treatment seem hell bent on finding their own story of oppression.

Even if they have to make it up via nooses, banana peels, and self-created racial slur graffiti.

So many of you guys asking "why are you printing this? This will fan the flames of hate." But mention 9/11, or D Day, and it's all about "Never Forget."

Gee, I'm starting to think you only want to forget the stuff that makes america look bad... Hypocrites.

Pitt Panther

Ever heard of the "Civil War" ? Ever thought of the fact that more people in this country wanted to end slavery than keep it around and did just that at a cost of hundreds of thousands of lives ? Ever think that a large majority of this country never had anything to do with slavery either directly or through our ancestors and never will ? Ever think that tens of millions of us want to live in peace and not be victims of racial hatred stirred by people like yourself ? AND you can add me to the list of those who have posted they didn't see the need and picking this scab.

Thanks KF Flashback Friday is one of the best things you do. No discourse on current affairs is truly informative unless it is rooted in historical perspective. "How we got here" is important to anybody really interested in "Where we're going."

I suscribe to newspapers.com as well.
That front page is interesting.

But I've seen much worse from some 1930's Clarion Ledger editions.

But speaking of the derogatory Asian term" chink", one High School buddy of mine was nicknamed "chink" during the 1980's.

I still don't why ... he looked like a pasty white, redheaded Irish dude.

Kingfish, Thanks for giving us a peak back at our shared history. My Dad was a liquor runner and we grew up in a KKK stronghold. He used his own history lessons to teach us NOT to drink and TO treat everyone nice regardless of their color or economic status. I hope we learn as much from our past and act on it just as he did.

Pitt,
Which of those mundane headlines do you deem worthy to “never forget?”

Poet Who Know It said...

KINGFISH FOR THE WIN...

Pick a scab,
Fan a flame...
Gin up discord
It's the Kingfish's game.

Pretends he's white
Then tries to be black
He's simply another
Race-baiting hack.

It's what he do
Night and day
Can't have calm
No fun that way.

So, come on down
and join right in
Get all stirred up
He suckered you again.

I don’t see why y’all are fussing. History is much good and much evil. No sense pretending like it didn’t happen. I enjoy reading old articles. Not just race ones though. Like how much a steak dinner cost in 1921 or what political nonsense was happening that day. Y’all chill out. Conservative white dude here btw.

@7:20
the fact that you felt the need to mention your race and political indoctrination speaks volumes.

Chill out naysayers. It's a snippet of history that's all. It's not an opinion. It's not an attack. It's a day out of history. The fact that on that day and at that time the news outlet was so blatantly racist gives you a true perspective of that time in history. There are many articles in that paper besides the racist stuff, and kingfish did not pick them out. He did not state an opinion, he did not give emphasis, he simply presented a typical newsday in Mississippi's past for historic reflection. You read what you want. Personally I enjoy a look back at old periodicals without narration or opinion.

Hey 9:16 it’s 7:20 here again. Maybe I did not articulate my point very well. I’m saying I don’t think kingfish is race baiting by publishing an old article. Lots of other commenters say he is stirring the pot. I disagree. But as a conservative white dude it seems like I should be the one saying “quit stirring up all this ancient history about racism, you are making us look bad.” My opinion differs from those commenters who are probably also conservative white folk. Have a good day.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
