A supposedly needed new flag is not the issue but rather the way this flag change cluster went down. I will vote against every new flag offered for approval.

What something positive on JJ?

I'm absolutely going to show up and vote against any option they put on the ballot. Our two leading legislative eunuchs, Delbert Hosemann and Philip Gunn, got swept up in a wave of white guilt and got rid of the old flag without a real plan for a new one. I didn't have any attachment to the old flag, but I won't be part of bailing out these two dumbasses. Why do we need a flag anyway? And where's all that new industry and investment that was promised when the old flag was cancelled?

The new flag designs, including the one that was picked, all sucked. However, each is/was better than the current state flag that was just retired.

For you Lost Cause whiners: you know that it was only a matter of time before the current state flag was changed. Your whining is only amplified by the fact that the change happened during this racially explosive time. But it should have happened 20+ years ago. Blaming Gunn, Reeves, or Hosemann for wanting to go ahead and get this issue settled and off the table is a false narrative. It was going to happen sooner or later.

In the end, I'll probably vote for the replacement flag, as I don't think it matters. It doesn't hurt us abroad like the current flag does. We need to get the issue behind us and move on to things that truly affect people.

Mississippi cannot get anything right. The old flag was a racist rag that should have been replaced. OK. But decide on a new flag and adopt it. What's so difficult? Now they have this convoluted process that allows everybody who may have a beef, relevant or not, to vote down the choice they have made. Stupid. This is the best way to spend the next twenty years voting on a flag design. It's not that big a deal. Legislature, pick one and move on!

Compared to most state flags it's pretty damn good. Nothing is perfect. Let's get it over with. I'll vote for it.

My preferred flag was not even considered. I wanted the NASCAR black and white checkered flag. It would have been cool to see the state flag of Mississippi waved at the end of every car race.

I may not vote for this one. Don't like the little yellow orange stripes. Unsure what they even stand for, and have heard no satisfactory explanation. Afraid of things I don't understand.

Actually, there's a great idea in that! How about a silkscreen image of Scarlett O'hara throwing red dirt at the Carpetbagger and his floozie, with the words, "That's all of Mississippi you'll ever get!"

The old flag was a symbol of defiance, and I think the new one should be, too. It needs to send a strong and unmistakable "F U !", to all the busybody outsiders meddling in Mississippi's business.

I'm not a big fan of this flag, or the other design for that matter, but other than during this extended debate I may have spent five seconds of my life thinking about the state flag. Who cares? It's a state flag.

Not voting for either flag that Commission is considering. Ready for old flag to come down. A flag basef on State seal would be a better choice.

The proposed look insignificant and out of place compared to the Flags of the other 49 States. The Commission should have at least lookedat the flags of the other48 states.

Forget all these worthless comments about the flag - the winner, the first one to lose (the NFL Shield) and the old one. I was so glad that Dilbert got a chance to get his mug in front of another camera. Mrs. Senator Blount started the meeting explaining that Speaker Gunn, LG Hosemann and Governor Reeves (I think in that order which spoke a lot of her opinions) were invited and all had prior commitments. Gunn and Reeves obviously had enough sense to not show up - but not for Dilbert. Although he couldn't be there in person (and just as Gunn had his buttboy there to speak for him, Hosemann had his friendgirl to do the same) he saw an opportunity to get his dimes worth in. I truly believe he is the only politician that can exceed Jim Hood's race to a camera any and every time he sees one. And his isn't to get his face there as much as it is to be able to impart to all us serfs his extreme wisdom and good guidance that he knows what is best for all of us, and he is the one that can make it happen.

We are idiots if we think replacing a flag will tangibly alter one iota in race relations in this state. Tear down the statues, pull down the flags, re name the streets....if that alleviates some of whitey's guilt fine...but it aint gonna change anything. We are so naive to think it will. "Protestors" will be out rioting at the next white cop- black thug shooting that happens- regardless of what stupid symbolic measures we take to "prove" to the world that we aren't a bunch of racists hiding behind every tree just waiting to jump out and beat down the black man.

For all of you who don't like the proposed flag design, not to worry: I'm hearing rumblings that there are many inside / outside our State who view the magnolia itself as a symbol of "antebellum" times, and thus, consider it to be a racist symbol (I shit you not!) Therefore, even if enough people vote to adopt this design as our new State flag, when we go through the process of getting rid of it and selecting our NEXT flag, maybe you can get something you like better at that point (or, maybe even the next time.....)

For the record, I am a conservative and a "don't bend to outside forces." Having said that, I am glad the legislature changed it. They had the INTELLECTUAL HONESTY to see the flag for what it WAS, past tense for all of you Chris McKKKlanielites, a symbol of hatred, period!

I would bet that it was Gunn's guy - he wanted to change it to 20 stars rather than 20 plus the award for being good to everybody --- the gold star. He also wanted to put the IGWT inside the circle rather than part of it. He tried one last time to get the stars rearranged and lost, so my bet is on him. He was sent with a mission from his boss and failed; what can we say. Guess Delbert won this Shootout At The Museums over Gunn.

I will take the high road. I will vote for this flag. This flag does not make or break this state. We have bigger issues. I don't want the media making us out to be what they already think we are. Let's move on.

Several weeks ago one of the flag members(a white female) during one of the meetings claimed the magnolia tree/flower was racist according to some folks. The left is never satisfied.

Just say no to prposed flag. It is too Antebellum. It was time for old Flag to go. But this flag looks inferior to the State Flags of the other 49 States.Some Romantics may like it, but it is too Old South.

Actually, you can fly any flag you want, including the Confederate flag. There is no law penalizing you for that, and this new one (for which I will vote YES), is just the official state flag. Hopefully, this will put all this flag fighting behind us, and we can focus on getting off the bottom ranking of most everything that really matters.

The final choice is good enough. I will support it. It was way past time to shed the old flag. Legislature would have been smarter to allow two choices on the ballot - that way a new flag with majority support would be assured.

I don’t mind the flag, but it looks like it was designed by a 5th grader using clip art. Maybe we could have a nice flag designed by an adult designer based on this concept.

Make a choice by getting the designs on the ballot

Anyone who knows Mississippi history knows how the magnolia is used as the symbol of the white elite from the Old South, this flag is just a subliminal perpetuation of the cis-hetero, white supremacist ruling class in the state.

And, not that anyone ask but let’s take a look at some TRUE history:
1) Honest Abe never personally owned slaves. Some of his family
did but not him.

2) Mississippi’s main reason for leaving the Union was over slavery NOT
over “states rights” as a lot of us Mississippians were taught growing
up. If u get a copy of the letter which the Mississippi govt leaders sent to
the folks in DC, over the reasons Mississippi was going to succeed, it
SPECIFICALLY mentions the continued need to have slaves for labor purposes.

3) I was told by a tour guide 25+ years ago when me and others were walking
the property on Mississippi coast where Jefferson Davis lived, after he had returned
from living in Canada for few years after the war, that he had BOUGHT that nice
property and decided to retire there. Well, if what I learned few months ago
is correct, that’s 100% FALSE. Upon further review, JD and his wife became friends
with a lady who owned the property. And, over a period of few years, he convinced the
lady to CUT HER ONLY sister out of her “will” concerning Inheriting the property and
to “will it” to JD’s family!! I grew up in rural North/Central Miss and my family and friends
would have a name for someone who did what JD did here...”WHITE TRASH”...!

4) Totally opposite of what an upper 60’s yr old tour guide at Vicksburg battle field told my son’s
5th grade class, on a field trip 12 yrs ago of which I was a chaperone, slaves never actually “fought”
for the south although there were a few photos (taken in Louisiana) of them in uniform while sitting
or standing by confederate soldiers. The soldiers were making them feel important by allowing them
to have their photos taken. There’s documentation of Gen Lee having discussed with some leaders
of the south, 3-4 months before the south surrendered, about whether to make slaves take up arms and
become actual soldiers. They decided against it. The slaves helped at times with “supply lines” but
didn’t actually fight for south.

I’ve always been a history nut and I like my history to be TRUE.

I was not sure if I was going to vote in the upcoming election. The way this flag fiasco was crammed down our throats changed my mind. I will vote no to all flags. It is not that I like the old one, it is the fact they are changing it without giving us a say in it. This will establish a precedent which allows the omnipotent legislature to run our lives from now on.

The idea that magnolia flowers are racist is absurd but you can't please everyone, ever.

I stared at this flag for awhile. Initially I thought, well that's interesting and then it hit me. This is a flag designed by a committee. It looks like it. Way too busy, why the motto underneath the goofy looking magnolia? One or the other. Too many colored bars of different widths distract the viewer

1) Ok, Abe may have never "personally" owned slaves, but I do not believe RE Lee did either, he only oversaw slaves of an estate of which he was an executor, subject to court supervision. I believe they were inherited from George Washington on his wife's side. US Grant also supervised slaves.

2) The deep south had grown apart from the industrialized north from nearly the start. The "Declaration of Causes" was written by 5 convention delegates and was not voted on, unlike the Succession Ordinance, which was voted on and contains no mention of slavery. Slavery could not have been outlawed without a constitutional amendment passing 3/4 of the states. In 1860 there were 15 slave states, meaning either 45 free states would be needed to pass an amendment or slave owning states would need to vote to ban slavery. There was no real threat to slavery, except for the few who wished to take their slaves to western territories, which there was never going to be much desire to do anyway. The South had less population than the north, so had less representation in the US House. There were more free states being added than slave, so they had less representation in the US Senate. The final straw was when a regional political party, who was not even on the ballot in most of the South, won the presidential election, effectively shutting the South out of representative power. However, like "they'll take our guns", "slavery" was a much more effective rallying cry for succession.

3. No idea on that one. He did informally adopt a black child. It was informal as many states did not have adoption statutes at the time.

4. Holt Collier was a famous black Mississippi slave who fought for the South. I'm sure others did as well. While there may have been a national prohibition on the practice, there were bound to be exceptions. Also, the 1st Louisiana Native Guard was made exclusively of free blacks and fought in defense of New Orleans.

The North was hardly as noble as now reported or the South as evil as now believed.

A flag won't save Mississippi from itself. It is still going to be Missippi.
