Mississippi Breaks 50,000 Cases

Mississippi broke the 50,000 cases barrier.  The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,434 new cases of the Wuhan virus yesterday as well as 28 new deaths.*   The total number of cases is 51,097. The virus has caused 1,480 deaths. Nursing home deaths comprise 48% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 30,315 recoveries.  More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website.  The Rt factor remains at 1.17

Hospitalizations hit their second-highest level while ICUs set another record.

ICU space continues to be severely limited in the Jackson metro area.

When will Tate realize that a state-wide face mask mandate is needed? Do we have to have so many refrigerated trailers for morgues for him to wake up?

He seems to be more worried about kissing Trump's ring than worrying about Mississippians' health and our economy.

With many people living in one county but working in another county, Reeves's approach to adding counties a little at a time is not working according to these charts.

Not surprising. Predicted to occur by experts months ago.

We're staying home, eating well, enjoying our lives, hobbies, passions, and each other. Going to order take out from Wynndale Steak House tonight. We don't need bars or sporting events to be happy and feel sorry for those people whose lives apparently revolve solely around those things.

I'm one of the 50k and didn't even know it until a test told me so.

@2:44pm - And you infected untold dozens of people which inevitably will lead to deaths, if it hasn’t already. But who cares right? As long as you’re fine.

Same ole same ole.

Very bad and getting worse. Washington Post has us up a spot today to 2nd in the nation for infection rates behind only Florida. Arizona was tops but they must be doing something right as they have dropped to 10th. We dropped a spot to 7th in mortality. No way anyone can say we are not doing much worse than average.

For those who can't type Washington Post into their browser the direct link is https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/coronavirus-us-cases-deaths/?itid=sf_coronavirus

Will the requested, but unenforced, mask and gathering orders make a difference? Probably not. We'll probably see more school districts abandon an early August start date for one after Labor Day if they don't go to distance learning altogether. We are nowhere near being able to get kids back to school.

2:44 The actual total number is probably closer to 300,000 who have been infected. Like you, about half have had no symptoms. That's what's so bad about COVID. It is highly contagious but the effects vary greatly. That's good for you, but could easily be debilitating or fatal to someone you come into contact with if you aren't taking precautions all the time.

I'm not saying you weren't, but there are quite a few people here who think "if you're sick just stay home" is good enough when the reality is everyone has to do their part if we are to keep this under control.

I contacted it, my wife and one daughter did also back in mid December at an airport. It’s rough and we were told by the doc that it wasn’t the flu or strep so they gave us some antibiotics and sent us on our way. Since then, we have difficult time with sleep patterns and some of the worst dreams I’ve ever had in my life. I take melatonin to help me sleep but I dread going to sleep. It affects people differently.

Dr. Dobbs has no courage and this is when the state health officer needs both courage and ethics.

He will not eat inside at a restaurant. He acknowledges that inside bars and restaurants are sources. He acknowledges that other states have mitigated by their closure. He knows that mandates about masks don't work because people aren't buying in.

So by letting people mass in restaurants, inside, he is allowing people to walk into a house that is starting to burn. I buy that as a violation of his ethics.

2:25 - get your facts straight before you espouse your medical knowledge.

Hinds has refrigerated mourge trailers because of the shooting deaths that are mounting up -- not because of COVID issues.

Just because NYC, and now Texas, are having to deal with COVID bodies and you saw refrigerated trailers there, when you see them here you need to read the caption under the picture. Otherwise, you will jump to conclusions, use that jump to try to make a point, and instead make yourself look silly.

Sorry, but folks aren't traveling from Tishamingo County to Desoto, or to Hinds and the metro area, or to the coast. Same could be said for Sharkey, or Green, or Marion, or Amite.

Yes, folks in the metro area do travel from one county to another, but that fact doesn't apply to all 82 counties.

If you will listen you will hear that many counties are not having the issues that lead to these Ex Orders. Data is driving the decisions, not the back of the envelope that you got your Publishers Clearing House entry form in that you did your calculations about the proper solution.

I agree with everything that has been said, but really the Brewers beat the Cubs so I'm happy.

Can someone explain to me why everyone needs to be tested if exposed or has a sniffle if one is not going to be in crowded places? I am retired and only around the same few people everyday. Unless I am extremely sick and need medication, I’m thinking I will not get tested. The people (mostly young) whom I have known to have it did not take more than perhaps an Advil. The doctors did not prescribe anything for it. I’m very confused why so many people without symptoms are lining up to be tested.

Are they counting the “new” cases once? I know several people that tested positive and rested to see if they were still contagious...tested positive again... are they being counted 2 or 3 times as “new” cases?

i just love how the facebook and twitter medical colleges have taught everyone so well. Traditional medical school trained physicians, who from the beginning said Covid was too new to really know anything about it, have been changing their minds based on studies. they tell us one thing, then based on something called “research” tell us another. good thing i just follow facebook feeds for my phd in medicine.

That's about 0.017% of the entire population that tested positive. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Great news! People who say Mississippi can't hang with the rest of the country can suck it.

50,000 cases...not hospitalizations...not fatalities; let's keep this in perspective folks.

Does anyone know how many cases of the flu we had this year?

4:07pm Your post makes no sense and you can’t factually support your remarks.

The number of shooting deaths have been higher without the need for refrigerated trucks.
Indeed, that they are needed in hospital parking lots anywhere is an anomaly. That’s why they get photographed.

Moreover, 2:25 pm isn’t spouting “ medical knowledge He’s relying on CDC recommendations as well as that of the vast majority of physicians. You, on the other hand, seem to dismiss the fact that there are people who live in one county but travel to another for work. Do you not no anyone in supply / distribution or construction ? Ever seen a farmer’s market?

What is it about a new cause of death and the fact that we managed the other causes that you can’t comprehend?

Anonymous said...

@2:25

Masks clearly don’t do anything. Multiple states that have been under mask mandates for a month or more are still seeing rising cases. Wear one if it makes you feel better, but know it’s not helping anything.

Anonymous said...

For Heaven’s sake Tate: Quit taking a piece meal approach to the virus that does not stop at county lines and impose a Statewide mandate on wearing masks. Show you are serious, not a political tool of this failing, lame duck President who will soon be gone anyway.

People that tested positive, that return to get Retested to see if they’re still contagious, get counted again as a “new” case?
I know several people that tested positive (without symptoms) 2-3 times because they couldn’t return to work without a negative test...

Covideniers and anti-maskers will lead to a collapse of our economy.

Washington Post has Mississippi at 2nd in the nation for infection rate and 4th for mortality from COVID using the past week's data. No way to argue we aren't doing much worse than average. States around us like TN, AL, LA, and GA all saw spikes since Memorial Day too, but they have since slowed their infection rate while ours is still shooting upward like a rocket.

Tate is going to have to back off on his push to reopen schools. In most counties we are nowhere near capable of handling it. This isn't a case where only a couple of schools like JPS would need to close while others went on. It is going to affect a majority of students in the state and we need a consistent, coordinated statewide plan to educate the children. Going back just to have to shut down in a couple of weeks after cases spike uncontrollably will be worse than just keeping them closed and doing distance learning from the start.

Time to face the music. We've ignored basic mitigation actions, exhausted our medical reserves, and now we are going to have to shut our kids in for another six months because of it.

10:35 Dr. Dobbs has said multiple tests for one person only count as one result.

9:15, the Japanese wear masks every flu season and every time a bad virus pops up. They wouldn’t keep doing it if it didn’t work. USA makes up 4% of the world population but we are 30% of Covid19 cases. I bet we make up 80% of the anti-science internet conspiracy traffic.

"That's about 0.017% of the entire population that tested positive. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." NOPE.

I know you didn't like math, or, you're like someone who doesn't like math that he disagrees with, but 50K out of 3 mill is NOT .017%, son. That number is 50,000/3,000,000, or, 1 out of 60. That's almost 2 percent, or 1.7%.

And, son, we didn't even lose 1% of our servicemen in WWII as KIAs, as an example. And, no, I'm not equating cases with deaths, but the fact of the matter is that we've already lost 1480 fellow Mississippians in 5 months, as opposed to 1848 KIA in ALL of WWII for the state, in 4 years.

Good grief. Get your facts somewhat right, son. 99.6 percent of Mississippians survived WWII. We are doing far worse on this. And, yes, 100% of folks eventually die, but this is EARLY and EXTRA death. Try to keep up.

Hell, we're NUMBER 2 in the NATION. Give up the Covid denial and lies or stick to mask disinformation as you serve as a tool for Russian and Chinese anti-American influencers.

Kingfish; With all these daily repetitive bullshit covid threads you are quickly losing your audience to Facebook pages run by conservatives. There are three now that have sucked your audience away. If you don't stop all this Covid bullshit, you will find yourself in a virtual vacuum, and it will be way too late to appeal for donations. I'm simply trying to help.

to the anti-maskers.. masks worked in asia, europe, canada....the USA is the center of the pandemic and will continue to be. we can’t even handle this as well as many third world countries....

I am?

Got news for you. My traffic is at an all-time high and is staying there. There is a great deal of hunger for info on this virus and you guys are reading it.

The number of cases is not what concerns me. Yeah, those numbers are most likely off a good bit but who knows by how much.

What is concerning me the most is that orange line on the graphic above. Steadily rising. That is the data that is the problem. That number slowly rising is what worries me.

Actually, not true, Kingfish. You're losing readers left and right with the incessant, multiple covid-numbers threads. We're abandoning you for Y'all Politics and Mississippi Politics. We can get non-stop Covid stats on Supertalk, all day long. I stop by here to see the latest Salter bullshit.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
