Who watches the money at the District Attorney's office? Molly Minta asked that question over at Mississippi Today and found the answer to be rather wanting. Ms. Minta reported:
Days before Brad McCullouch would be appointed the Hinds County district attorney in July, he sat down in a tan Shaquille O’Neal executive chair in a mostly empty corner office on the fifth floor of the Hinds County Courthouse.
Prompted by a public records request from Mississippi Today, McCullouch decided to look for financial and payroll records. He tried to find invoices, accounting software, usernames and passwords for the office’s bank accounts, and audits.
What he found instead, he said, was a black three-ring binder of checks that date back to January 2026. ...
After taking the reins, McCullouch went to Trustmark with an assistant district attorney, who suggested he ask the bank for all the DA’s accounts.
That’s how he learned the DA’s office had seven accounts at Trustmark, some of which McCullouch didn’t know about.
McCullouch said he hopes to have an independent audit of the office completed by the time he leaves his post after the Nov. 3 special election.
In a text message to Mississippi Today, Owens wrote that he paid for an independent audit of his office so he could provide a copy to the Mississippi State Health Department as part of a grant application. Mississippi Today has not retrieved that audit from MSDH by press time.... Rest of article
Is anyone surprised?

Smart move to call for an audit on day one. Following a DA and now convicted felon requires a good, hard look at everything left behind. I can only imagine what a mess it is.
This is some Twilight Zone style stuff. After reading that, I’ll bet you two whole dollars, there will be a whole bunch of dollars that will not be found from the Hinds County DA’s. Typical government BS that tax payers pay for. “ Just Gimme Some Truth.” John Lennon
Jody may have more trouble coming his way.
This will put an end to their "slush fund." How many rats will soon be jumping ship "to spend more time with their family?"
Once again, disappointed by how corrupt this state and its municipalities are.
Anyone think this is going to come out smelling just fine?
Does this mean that the legal conference trip to Paris will be canceled this year?
KF I seem to recall that you do not have a fondness for Miss Today but yet maybe it just depends upon whom they are reporting?
Their office shredder is getting a workout, but after hours.
If any criminal activity is discovered the take-no-prisoners Old Blood and Guts AG Fitch will have to take over due to a conflict of interest.
Treat it as I do the CL or WLBT. When they screw up or do something questionable, I say so. When they do a good job, I say so. Just to show how nice I am, I don't even reprint their stories as they give permission to do so. I instead post a few paragraphs and link the story. They did the work, they should get the traffic.
Does Shad White have jurisdiction over county DA offices? He needs to do his job while he campaigns to be a big boy governor.
Next thing you know Shad will be saying Jody Owen s is a whistleblower. (kidding - I think)
Bleachbit too.
KF I love stories like this. Some few of us have a bloodhound nose for dirty trix. I was positively impressed by JJ ethics in permitting original source to provide the full article so they get the credit for their work. In a different field, I have been in court twice to get my stolen work compensated, and had to interrupt the theft a few other times.
Surpissed the audit hasn't already started.
After 12 years years of Robert Shuler Smith, there's no telling what a real audit may find.
He was pretty much untouchable in Jackson, due to his family name. And he acted accordingly.
Can we expect anything better from the next DA? It's Hinds County, after all.
Wait... Mississippi has an AG?
Friends don't let friends live in Hinds County.
Which accounts are the cigar bar slush fund? Which account did the little grandmas pay into to get charges dropped against their relative that didn’t do nuffin???
