C19 Update: Record Deaths in Mississippi

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 957 new cases of the Wuhan virus yesterday as well as 44 new deaths.   The total number of cases is 32,214. The virus has caused 1,158 deaths. Nursing home deaths comprise 48% of overall Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. There are 19,388 recoveries.  More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website.  The Rt factor is 1.06.

The Health Department said "10 (deaths) of which occurred between June 17 and June 28, identified from death certificate reports."

Hospitalizations reached a new record of 648 patients while ICUs remained at their highest levels.

Your blog so your guidelines, but when you post things like "There are 19,388 recoveries" and "The Rt factor is 1.06," you are just plain old fashioned wrong. Both are rough calculations at best and bordering on nonsense at worst. They are not known numbers or calculations from known numbers. If you were to say that "MDH presumes there are X recoveries (with a footnoted explanation of what that means)" and "(rtlive or whatever site) estimates the R-number to be X, with a potential range of Y to Z" that would be accurate, and that is exactly what MDH, rtlive, etc. do.

What’s it going to take to get people to see the real danger of this spreading out of control? Will it take 50 deaths? 100? Pictures of patients struggling for breath in the halls once ICUs are full? These are the same type of people who try to ride a hurricane out on the coast. You can’t fix ignorance.

What do you suggest @6:11? Be specific.

6:11 what will it take? I think it will take some famous people getting covid and dying from it. What we have seen so far is that famous people say they have it, it's not severe, and that's it.

If someone high up in the Trump admin died, or a high level Mississippi politician, or a really famous entertainer, that might make a difference. Especially if we get video of them in the hospital, in full intubation.

Right now it seems like no one dies except people we never know. Other people.

The really interesting thing is that the no-mask, "open it all up!" crowd is forcing, via the increasing rate of infection/transmission, responsible governments to do exactly the opposite of what they want. If we had kept the numbers down by wearing masks, distancing, etc., and shown it was relatively safe to ease restrictions, responsible governments could have done just that. If we continue with the trend now showing, get ready for lockdown-plus. And much greater odds of a Biden presidency, a Dem Congress, and even more governmental restrictions on things totally unrelated to COVID-19.

This boogie man, along with the Salter and Crawford tripe, is getting old, dude. If you want to be the Clarion Lewinski maybe they have an opening for an experienced cut and paste artist on the dead beat. Stay original.

@6:11...maybe so. Or maybe if we had not been conditioned for millions of deaths we would be more concerned about 44. Or maybe if we didn’t have financial incentives for coronavirus positives or changed the way we categorize deaths to play 6 degrees of coronavirus In order to Vietnamize the body count. Riddle me this. If I am HIV positive and die of a stroke did I die of AIDs? No. If you are SARS-COV2 positive and die of anything or if you die with a cough, fever, anything respiratory wise you are a COVID-19 death...and we still have only 44 deaths today in MS.

Pappy out.

Yes Pappy! And did the department of health ever get its data fidelity issues rectified? Seems to me that if there is a financial motive to miscategorize an illness to increase reimbursement, don'tcha think a hospital that was prohibited from performing elective procedures and is financially struggling would cook the books a little....well, don'tcha?

Medicare pays out $35,000 for a Covid-19 patient, and pennies on the dollar for a coronary. Hmmm.

Lots of fuzzy math/statistics being presented.

The Rt will go up tomorrow. It’s based on the latest cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Things were calm over the holiday weekend but now we’re seeing things pick back up substantially. Look for it to match the previous 1.26 after the last big spike to over 1,000 cases in a day about a week ago.

For those dismissing CV19 by arguing the death rate is low....

First of all, people who die of other causes are not in the count. This is an addition to the death rate in this State and the Nation.. Compare the number of deaths from anything else for an April to May period in MS and 6 month period in the US.

The experts agree that the new cases are young people who socialized in close contact and we will see more deaths as they spread it to those with underlying conditions.

Please note too that as Tom Hanks and his wife learned, few with CV 19 develop enough antibodies to become immune. They can get it again . They didn’t. The unanswered question is will a second case be more deadly ? Some people have continued to be positive with relapses for months.

There are still far too many unknowns. The virus has mutated. You can argue your intuitive thinking and anecdotal experiences and your bad math but it won’t change the fact that you are gambling against a virus that isn’t behaving like other viruses. And your lack of any sense of duty or personal responsibility to our Nation is so low that a mask and distance is too great a sacrifice for your community, State or Nation is glaring. You lack the imagination to know that we could be operating our economy with reasonable normalcy like the EU if you had been more responsible.

To Dr. Anonymous at 8:21. The Virus has mutated "some", but the disease is not more severe, per WHO. Still nothing to compare to the Swine Flu of 1918. This will reduce itself quickly over time. Sorry, no Armageddon, yet.

@8:21 for those arguing that you wearing a mask is to protect me from you, then you have reason to believe that you may have it. Why are you out and about with a mask on when you should be self isolating if you think you are a danger of spreading it to other people.

If you think you have it, wearing a mask is not enough, STFH!

You know, I'm really getting sick of the fact that Tate seems to want to copy Trump in blaming the pandemic on protestors and to politicize the pandemic. Big mistate Tate. You should not politicize the outbreak in MS but provide leadership in urging people to quit holding wedding and other receptions that break his Orders. For God's sake Tate, LEAD, DON'T POLITICIZE THE VIRUS. The virus, after all, is stronger than you. Get serious about it every day.

Louis LeFleur said...

Anon. 9:10, the 1918 pandemic was the Spanish Flu, not the Swine Flu. The latter was in 1976/77 when Gerald Ford was president. The so called Spanish Flu, by the way, is commonly thought to have originated in Kansas.

Why haven’t social hosting charges been brought against the family that allowed the post river party? If enough asshole parents realized that letting their high school kids get drunk and act a fool would result in jail time this shit would end.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
