Appointees Named to Flag Commission

Leftenent Governor Gilbert Hosemann and Speaker of the House Phillipus Gunn issued the following statements.

Leftenent Governor Hosemann

A former Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court, longtime Vicksburg attorney, and former public school teacher from the Coast will serve as Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann’s appointees to the Commission to design a new State flag.

Hosemann’s appointees include former Justice Reuben Anderson of Jackson, J. Mack Varner of Vicksburg, and Sherri Carr Bevis of Gulfport.

“These three individuals, and the others who are charged with recommending a new flag, have a heavy responsibility to bear in the coming weeks. Because of their character, and the diversity of their backgrounds and perspectives, I have confidence they will come to a conclusion which will be respectful of our past and reflect a bright future,” Hosemann said.

The Commission, established by House Bill 1796, is charged with making a recommendation to the general electorate on the design of a new flag. The Speaker of the House and Governor are also provided three appointees for a total of nine members. The legislation requires the Commission to make its selection by September 14, and provides any new design must include the words “In God We Trust,” which also adorns the State seal.

To become Mississippi’s new state flag, a majority of qualified electors voting in a special election set for November 3, General Election Day, must approve the design.

“Ultimately, the people of Mississippi will decide whether this design, or some other design, should be the flag of our future,” Hosemann said.

Anderson served as the first African American Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court from 1985 to 1991. He received his undergraduate degree from Tougaloo College, and law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law. Anderson currently serves as President of the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

Varner currently practices family and business law in Vicksburg. He received his undergraduate degree from Millsaps College, and law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law. He is the past president of the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Vicksburg Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, and formerly served on the Board of Trustees for Millsaps College.

Bevis was recently named Community Relations Liaison to the Singing River Health System. She received her bachelor’s degree in communications from Mississippi State University and a master’s degree from George Washington University. She previously worked as Assistant Secretary of State for External Marketing for the Secretary of State’s Office, and as a public school teacher in the Bay-Waveland and Hancock County School Districts. Bevis is the current national president of the Mississippi State Alumni Association.

Speaker Gunn

Jackson, Miss. – Under the terms of House bill 1796, Speaker Philip Gunn has selected his appointments to the Commission to Redesign the Mississippi State Flag.

Robyn Tannehill, mayor of  Oxford, Mississippi.

“Robyn’s background as a businessperson in the marketing industry, and as a community leader in
north Mississippi makes her a perfect member of the commission.  She is known for her passion for
Mississippi and for having a forward-thinking vision for her community and our state.  I’m
confident that she will be a vocal and active member of the commission.”

Dr. Mary Graham, president of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
.

“Dr. Graham has proven herself to be a visionary leader for the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast region. Her dedication to preparing our students for jobs in the 21st  century through focusing on and growing workforce development initiatives is exemplary. Everyone admires the work of Dr. Graham and she will be a great voice for Mississippians on the commission.”

TJ Taylor of Madison, Mississippi

“TJ Taylor has been a member of my staff for five legislative sessions.  He is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi College Law School.  He has served as policy advisor, general counsel and currently serves as policy director for my office.  He has been a key figure in the success of the effort to build support and ultimately pass legislation to change the state flag and ultimately form this commission.  His passion for this issue and his calm demeanor will add much to the commission’s process while representing the voice of a
younger generation of Mississippians.

Let the Turnip Wars begin!

Good to know, so we can place blame at the correct people when they bring us a horrible looking and lame flag to vote on.

Why would any person agree to serve on such a committee? That's like being on the school board. Crappy job, lots of phone calls from mad people, zero pay.

How much will this undertaking cost taxpayers by the time it is over?

“Ultimately, the people of Mississippi will decide whether this design, or some other design, should be the flag of our future,” Hosemann said.

YEA RIGHT!!!!! Hoseman, Gunn, & TATER TOT have already made the decision for the people of Mississippi. NO STARS & BARS on the new flag.

Let the people vote including the 1894 flag.

Right now the 3 Amigos couldn't get elected "RAT CATCHER"!!!!

I just hope they come up with a better flag than those who design our car tags. And they need to remember one thing: what looks good from 18 inches away does not look as good from 25 feet away.

was hoping Oprah was selected-

Do all the hardcore (McDanielites) keep the flag folks realize that flag is democrat one? Or is it just me??

The speaker and lieutenant governor need to be reminded that it's going to be imperative they provide photographs of everyone they pick to be on this commission. In today's world, the race of those making decisions on the choices the public will have for a new flag will be the single most important factor in which designs are accepted and which are rejected. Sad, but true.

Thank you for naming the traitors.

Glad to see Dilbert and his royal highness Gutless Gunn found more cronies. just show the flag you want and quit jacking the taxpayers around. Its a fix from the word GO

What an absolute waste of time and money. They didn't need all this to kill the one we had. Just let the leftist media or the ncaa pick one. Or maybe one of those huge corporations that will now bring their business to Mississippi.

" Pretty underwhelming".

That's an understatement 1:59.

Glad to see that among all 3 million people in MS that were available -- since in drawing up this bill Hosemann and Gunn made sure that they could pick whoever the hell they wanted, while restricting Reeves to a specific group for each of his three appointments -- this is where they went. The obvious one, of course, is Bevis due to her special relationship with Hosemann.

Wish Tater had a free hand in making his choices instead of having to pick school kids or whatever the restrictions that these two powerhungry hacks put on his choices, so we could see whether he could come up with better choices, but thanks to the H/G partnership we won't have that choice.

I'm still flying my old flag , I don't give a shit what happens.!!

Why do we even need one at this point. Money pit before all is said and done.

Both of them appointed several who suck up to them. This is undeniable. Noticeably absent are: An officer of the NAACP and a member of Sons Of Confederate Veterans. But, Ole miss is represented well, Igbart's Vicksburg buds and Gunn's minions. Let's just be damned sure there's a brown fist in the finalists.

We are not going to get to make the choice of flags. We have already done that. Any other flag will not be the choice of the people.
How about we ask black lives matter what they are going to choose for us?
You can bet your ass the people will not have a choice.

Mack Varner? A 75 year old Vicksburg lawyer who has been a hermit for the past forty years? Oh...but Delbert 'knows the family'.

What about Charles Evers, George Flaggs and Chancellor Khayat? Oh, wait...How did they forget Haley's boy, Nic Lott?

" You can bet your ass the people will not have a choice. "

From what I've heard, you are correct 5:23.

It's my understanding there will be only one design for a (up or down) vote on the November ballot.

If the design fails, we will not have a flag for a while.

Then this "committee" will have enough time to put up more designs for a vote.

I have no idea if this is true, but I heard it from a State Representative. His exact words was something to the effect, " that is the only way Delbert and Gunn could pass this bill in a weekend session".

I guess time will tell.

I wish someone would request the input of Minister Farrakhan.

Mack Varner is no hermit, that’s the last thing I would call him.

Anonymous said...

Why are we even doing this at all? The last time the issue came up, the change-it crowd came up with a reasonably attractive design. Why can't we just use that and skip the drama? You could have one meeting, say "yep, it's a design", and send it on out to the ballot.

It's not like they filled the committee with, say, graphic designers who might have meaningful professional input.

Anonymous said...

Mark my words, it is going to be the stupid state seal. They will do that in an effort to stave off the lawsuits over "in god we trust" by saying they are just using an existing logo.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if Betsy Ross had this many critics.

Just another misstep from Reeves, Gunn, Hosemann, and Harkins bowing down to any change in the wind.

Thought that changing the flag would bring SEC Championships, a NASCAR track, endless Fortune 500 companies and a renewed vision for Mississippi.

Nope. A state is made up of people. And unfortunately, Mississippi is made up of some of the dumbest, uneducated, and hateful people on this planet.

We will have an ugly flag that nobody likes. It’s will look retarded.

I heard they're hoping this will all blow over, and we can go back to the way it was and put the statues back up, etc.

Let’s don’t get sidetracked by the flag!.

I am retired Military with over 36 years of Service. The US Flag and or any flag is not important enough for me to get sidetracked of the real issues we face in life.

I am patriotic and love this Country, but spending this much time and energy on a flag is not of highest priority.

We elected Representatives of this State to make decisions. The decision was made, now let’s move on.

The Committee is a Farce!

These are good people, and they will do a fine job.

P.S. it no longer matters whether you oppose the change. Get over it.

Whatever the commission comes up with they will have missed the target. So let us raise and salute the red flag of Maggie's Drawers .

Tannehill's design will be similar to a tshirt patchwork quilt, using merch from Oxford establishments permanently lost to Serving Oxford Safely. Flag must be lowered at 10pm.

Whatever they come up with, assuming they will, can't be more ridiculous than Reeves' notion that two flags would be a reasonable solution.

How about two verdicts at trial? That way both families would be happy.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
