Governor Cuts Deal w/Speaker & Lt. Governor

The Governor's daily Covid-19 briefing is streamed below.  The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 262 new cases of the Wuhan Virus as well as 22 deaths today.   The total number of cases is 8,424.  The virus has caused 396 deaths.  More information and a complete list of infected counties can be found at the MSDH website.

*The Governor and Legislative leadership met yesterday.  Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann said he was asking Senators to stop action on a bill that gave legislature power to control CARES Act funds. Speaker Philip Gunn said the "legislature will appropriate the dollars with the Governor administering the dollars."

Let's see of the Governor and Lt. Governor are going to bring the African American community to the discussion. Today the Miss. Black Caucus requested $475M from CARES Act funds. The request entitled, “Black Empowerment RESET Initiative,” is a plan to revitalize the public sector, private businesses and the faith-based community.

Hospitalizations back up to 440. We haven't gotten past the peak and may not even be at the peak yet. The next couple of weeks will be very telling.

ICU and vent use are at their lowest point in the last four weeks, but they are still pretty steady. Not enough downward movement to declare it a trend.

Nice to see the chart showing actual date of death. We haven't had the major spikes like it appeared on Friday and yesterday, but the increase in deaths actually goes back three weeks.

Total cases is 8686.

The money is not a piggy bank that can be used for any purpose. It can only be used to reimburse the state for its response to the virus.

88% of deaths are over 60.

78% of hospitalizations are over 50.

Nearly half those who've died had hypertension. Just under half had heart disease or diabetes. Nearly 100 had lung disease.

When are we going to stop the insanity and realize this is a disease that primarily affects the old and the sick, and start making policy accordingly?

We need to help these people truly isolate themselves. They may need financial assistance. Or food assistance. Their caregivers may need testing to ensure they aren't bringing the virus with them.

But what won't help them is across-the-board sort-of-isolation for everyone. It hurts the young and healthy trying to earn a living. And it gives the truly at-risk a false, unwarranted sense of security.

@2:45 wouldn’t it be interesting if the money was divided by the amount of taxes that are paid.

Anonymous said...

@3:24, And, I would wager that even more had pre-diabetes.

Anonymous said...

How damn difficult would it be for MSDH to post the date of death on the deaths released in order for it to be trended?

Thanks you 3:40

This lady is no quack. Before she told the truth, she was a highly regarded and respected immunologist.

So does Horne still get its cut?

Anonymous said...

@4:24 They did starting today. Did you look at the website? It even breaks it down between nursing home deaths and other deaths.

@4:26 And she seems more believable and trustworthy than the Fauci.

Wow. All that tough talk from Gunn and Delbert. Can’t back it up so they cave in a week. REALLY? call the legislature back in session, run your mouth and you fold up like a bunch of little girls. Think we call that a bunch of punk ass bitches.

I guess you didn’t hear the press conference? If Gunn and Delbert Caved, why didn’t Tate get his way and he ( and Haley B) appropriates the cash? The PAB Is u

tates the one who caved. what did the legislature concede from last friday? absolutely nothing by my estimation.

Anonymous said...

Mississippi pols getting more fedbucks...what could go wrong?

Anonymous said...

9:38 10:49 Tate gets to “administer funds” which makes him the winner. I’m curious what part of that don’t you understand? It makes no difference who he gets to do it. Christ all mighty, listening to you is like playing cards with my my brother’s kids.

Anonymous said...

9:38 you think if TATE doesn’t get to use Haley B. that he didn’t win? He still wins cause he can choose who he wants to help administer the funds. Haley, Butler Snow, any other entity who could sub-contract to said others. I’m curious how your still able to survive a normal day with your ignorance of how the world works? Asking for a friend.

So let’s get this straight. Gov says he gets to dole out the money. Delbert and Gunn call everyone back to pass a law saying they get to dole out the money, which confirms that TATE got to dole out the money in the first place. Now there are two laws saying each gets to dole out the money. Everyone speculates TATE will VETO new law, legislators will override and then it will go to court. Trumps says money was intended for Governor’s to dole out the money. Now they all get together and say TATE gets to dole out the money. -The End

"...a plan to revitalize the public sector, private businesses and the faith-based community."

Sorry, Charlie, but that's not allowed under the federal guidelines. This money is not provided to the states to bolster the black economy or to blow on make believe corrections to decades of black mismanagement and neglect in their neighborhoods.

Everything wrong/bad/inefficient/broken that existed prior to this health crisis is flat-ass ineligible for these funds. Period. That includes Jackson's infrastructure, failing private sector businesses and whatever is meant by the 'faith based community'.

The black caucus, black preachers, black mayors, et al, efforts to grab part of this money are failed out the outset. This pandemic is not a black issue.

All this back and forth about who “won” and who “caved” is beside the point. An override of the veto (which certainly would have happened without a deal) would have been a very bad look for all concerned. Nobody was going to “win” a pissing contest, and they all saw that and mended their approach. The Legislature “won” to the extent that, as they had insisted, no money gets spent at all unless the Legislature approves. The governor “won” to the extent that once the Legislature says he can, he is the one to administer spending in the way the Legislature has approved. Frankly, that sounds like the way it usually works with Federal funds coming to the state, and the Public “won” because that is the way it should be.

Separation of Powers means exactly that. Each branch of government has a role to play, and the other branches must defer to that. Important lessons have been learned (or remembered) by everyone, and that can only be a good thing. In the future, I believe, we will see much more mutual communication and cooperation. No branch runs the show alone.

For weeks now, other states have already gotten CARES money directly into citizen's hands/accounts.....Mississippi is still dithering....while scheming about how to keep it all - and away from of its citizens hands.

Genius at 11:39, its "you're"...from a friend.

Anonymous said...

I'm interested hear how some of you out there would dole out the dollars. Any takers?

Anonymous said...

Delbert made Tate bend the knee!

Anonymous said...

You bunch of DUMB ASSES!

TATE LOST! Period. He wanted to administer the funds without Legislative appropriation. The legislature said no, we will appropriate it to you to use as we see fit. And that is what is happening. That is why Delbert and Gunn stated at the presser in front of Tate with him sitting 3 feet away, listen for yourself. They drug their preverbal sack across Tate's forehead. The legislature did not want to hold the hands of the agencies 24/7 and they never wanted to. They want Tate to do it, so when the next shit storm hits they will say we appropriated the monies to the agencies that are under the control of the Gov and he is administering it and he botched it, like he has botched everything else, DPS - no director, CPS- no director, Corrections - no director, MDA- no director, Employment Security- disaster. See a trend you Tate Homers. We are 6 months in from his election and he has NO appointments for those spots. TERRIBLE LEADERSHIP.

Tate caved and knew he was about to have a VETO override on his watch and make him a 1 termer. He caved to save his own ass. He knows he is toast in the legislature and the vote prooved it. Spin it if you want, but I bet Tate does not veto this bill coming to him. Any takers?

That is the truth.

Anonymous said...

I hate this term, but, 11:33 is 'spot on' in every respect. The lack of appointments is alarming. He could have done that instead of heading to Spain for soccer games. What's he waiting on now? He was elected six months ago next week!

If he vetoes, which he will not, he knows that would ensure him as a one-termer, since that action would throw the whole situation to the courts.

Other than the 'No Pumps' Vandevender guy, who the hell is in Tate's 'camp' to sit down and strategize with him? Is this ship absent a rudder?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
