Kemper Plant Brings Federal Investigation

The Justice Department is investigating Southern Company and it's liquid-coal gasification plant in Kemper County.  The Atlanta Constitution-Journal reported:

Atlanta-based Southern Company disclosed it is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice over a power plant that already has caused the company years of heartburn and billions of dollars.

Southern said it learned of the probe by the DOJ’s Civil Division on Monday and that it involved the Kemper County plant owned by the utility’s Mississippi Power subsidiary.

Southern, which is also the parent of Georgia Power, reported in a quarterly filing that it could not determine the outcome of the investigation but that it ultimately might prove significant enough to materially affect the parent company’s financial disclosures to investors.... Rest of article.
Stay tuned.

All you people who love to hate...and love to hate Dorsey....he called this thing out years ago.....this thing was and is a fraud.....wait until this thing gets going along....it will make Lamar Adams look like Lamont Sanford.

I visited the site after it was well under construction and saw so much waste that it made me absolutely sick. This should have never happened

Who were the PSC's that were on duty when this happened? Names please

And that's how Mississippians showed the world how brilliant they are. How many investors became millionaires in that scheme? And how much cash was siphoned off to friends?

With the Ebbers bankruptcy fading from memories it was time for Mississippi to jump back into view as the BEST AT DOING WORST. We must uphold our traditions dontchaknow.

Rob Knox - please explain your contorted thinking. You ask how many investors became millionaires (I assume you are referring to the Kemper plant as the scheme) in that scheme?

I can name a number of investors who lost a lot of money in their MPC/SC stock - both big time investors and folks who held the stock in various funds.

Some land owners in Kemper County sold their property - don't know if they became cash millionaires from the sale, cause it would take most of Kemper to be worth a million.

So - who are these folks that you are claiming got rich quick from this scheme?

Names, Please

@ 3:15...."The commission voted 2-1 to approve the $2.4 billion plant. Southern District Commissioner Leonard Bentz and Central District Commissioner Lynn Posey, both Republicans, voted for the plant. Northern District Commissioner Brandon Presley, a Democrat, voted against it."

Might I suggest starting with inspection Lynn Posey’s campaign donations.

I remember talking to Lynn Posey about it while construction was underway. When I brought up that people were mad because they were going to unnecessarily pay more for electricity, he replied ‘oh well. Won’t be the people in my district’.

Can't see the plant from my house.

Haley never missed an opportunity to talk about how great Kemper was, when he was speaking anywhere while Kemper was under construction. I would bet his lobby fees were significant, based on how many times I heard him speak about how great the new plant would be. Would be good to see some accountability to Southern C based on how much money they tried to extort out of MS tax payers. I bet they played dirty and I hope they get caught.

Nothing to see here...please disperse!

Contorted, 3:57? It's very likely that a lot more Gulf Coast condos were bought by Mississippi politicians and their friends from money passed under the table on that Rube Goldberg power plant than on the MDOC scam or even Ebbers/Worldcom. And the GOP doesn't have McCoy to blame it on like they did with the meat packing plant.

Will state tax funds be used to defend the big shots in the deal?????

And I'll bet Haley didn't lose a dime in the deal.

Don't forget that were still paying for Grand Goof.

this is just as big a taxpayer screw job as the beef plant. remember that one? thats when those slobs at the ms legislature decided to get into the beef business back in 2001. after all everybody at that time was on the atkins diet which told you to pack you face with steak 3 time a day. the legislature thought they could make alot of money. THIS IS NOT a joke. thats how those illiterate , goofball legislators think. thats why they invested taxpayer money. not their money , your money.

Rob Knox, you have come back with nothing. Nothing more than your speculation and accusations - with absolutely nothing to back them up.

That makes two posts where you spew cap out of your upper orafice without anything to support yourself.

Not even a good try. I thought you would at least make a feeble effort to defend your first offering

KIOR fiasco was bigger lose to MS taxpayers than beef plant.

SPENTRGY MS owes me some $ from over charging me FOR YEARS!

I'll be patient 8:24. Eventually things play out and quite often my insight into the political muck eventually proves out. Who are you so intent on defending?

7:43 Flip a coin... one side will be correct... "quite often".

According to an engineer I spoke with from another Power Company, the Coal Gasification has been tried several times and has never worked. My thought was, if the USA is the Saudi Arabia of Natural Gas, why didn't they originally build it to run on Natural Gas? Natural Gas is what its running on now!! But,, nothing will be done because I heard under the table money has been exchanged from Jackson MS all the way to Washington D.C.

Why do the feds have to come here and clean up our mess. Ryan Brown was working for Cecil Brown at the PSC, yet neither did anything to investigate the Kemper criminal enterprise. Even though Kemper whistleblower, Brett Wingo begged them to launch a criminal investigation, nothing happened.Ryan Brown was also there when rate payers got stuck with a billion dollar power bill from Kemper. He is the last person who should be elected to the PSC. Kemper was 150 times the cost of the beef plant. Both brought to you by the Mississippi Energy Institute. Drain the swamp!

to may 3 @ 8:47... the feds come here to flush the toilet because this place is incapable of policing itself due to all the corruption. you didn't know that? now you know.

Anonymous said...

Look at the 990 Forms on line for the Mississippi Energy Institute. OVERBLOWN OVER PAID SALARIES for little Barbour acolytes. A f&^% waste of taxpayer money !!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

keep voting gop you idiots...

Anonymous said...

It's not the GOP nor the dems; it is both parties, but the finger pointing keeps the corruption and waste alive.

And Bentz was rewarded for his vote to approve the plant by a nice cushy job paying about $120,000 per year by Feel as CEO of a planning and development District office in south Mississippi. He has a HS education.

This is why the average Mississippi Power bill (1000 kw) is $128 a month while Entergy is only $114 per month.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
