DA Candidate: "I Don't Think There Are Bad People."

A Jackson Advocate interview provided a glimpse into how a Hinds County District Attorney candidate thinks about prosecuting crime.  Crime victims received little mention from him although he waxed eloquently about how he will help criminals.  He took to task prosecutors who think their job is to only convict suspects.  He unwittingly revealed a lack of knowledge of criminal procedure. Mr. Owens said little about moving crowded criminal dockets. Don't take JJ's word for it, read for yourself.

Oh really? 48 hours? Does he even know criminal procedure 101?  He might be referring to the initial appearance.  Will Mr. Owens have a copy of Criminal Procedure for Dummies 101 with him in the courtroom?

Yes, the Raymond Detention Center is filled with people who are in jail because they can't pay a fine.

Um, has he even wondered why the Hinds County criminal justice system is called "catch & release"?  Look at the guys locked up from Hinds County.   Thugs beat people to death in parking lots and walk away with ten year sentences.  Carjackers get two years in prison and kill young women a month after getting out of jail.  Cases are repeatedly continued so suspects can go kill JSU professors while out on bond for years.  Notice who Owens doesn't talk about in this looooooooooong article? Victims.  Crime victims scarcely merit his attention while he sees the criminal as one giant research project for Sociology 101.   The poor victim is a just a variable to be quantified in the white paper.  Here's a good quote:

Um, that is the name of the job.  But wait, there is more:

However, the prospective District Attorney doesn't think there are bad people:

Wrong, Mr. Owens.  Go hang out with Hutto for a day.  Go chill with Jarvis Durr or Tommie Young. Go duke it out with the Dukes brothers.  You might learn something they didn't teach you in school: there are actually bad people.

Next up is an example of how he would use restorative justice and other concepts to "heal" a community:

Sorry, Mr. Owens, but when that man killed another, he crossed a line.  He earned life without parole or the chair.  Period.  More needs to be done to help children whose parents are incarcerated.  However, removing a KILLER from the community DOES make it safer.

Jody Owens leads the fund-raising in the District Attorney's race.  He has the family name. Make no mistake, much of this interview will play well in the poor communities such as South Jackson, West Jackson, Bolton, and Edwards. Stay tuned for more criminal justice follies in Hinds County.  They are a'coming.

Read the rest of the fawning interview. There is much more where this stuff came from.

He actually makes a lot of sense here. Simply prosecuting crime will not fix the problems with Jackson. You can't simply throw 10% of the city into jail. Sounds like he understands that you have to prosecute serious crime as well as work with other people - police, churches, community groups to deter crime in the first place. Other cities have successfully done this with Democrat prosecutors. I don't live in Jackson, but as a Mississippian, I hope Mr. Owens can help turn it around.

Scary stuff-

Until you can get judges on the bench that will impose a sentence rather than spank a hand and basically say "Oh, Baby, your shouldn't do that." It will not matter who the prosecutor is. Can this Owens person be any worse or better than RSS?? The proverbial buck stops at the judges and jury.

Definitely on point KF. Another thing about Mr. Owens is that he led the fight against Charter Schools when the SPLC sued. But, currently, his child is enrolled in a local Catholic school. Typical liberal hack. Do as I say, not as I do hypocrite. If he had any moral compass he would enroll his kid in a public school.

And this is exactly what community organizing groups like Southern Poverty Law Center are designed to do with money from socialist and liberal out of state interest. These grassroots movement groups like that, Malcom X GRM, Southern Echo and the like work to place people like Owens in legal positions to destroy southern cities in the name of color and race versus calling a spade a spade. Once the get in as Mayors, Judges, DA's, etc, they force their agenda on the people to where if you speak out against it, you're labeled a racist. Then you just have to throw your hands up and move out. #boldnewcity

"I don't think there are bad people" is not only naïve, but it's the foundation on which the rest of his worldview is built. All the ideology built on this foundation will collapse when it turns out that there are actually bad, even evil, people in this world.

I don't mean this in a flippant way, but I didn't realize that there were reasonably sane people over the age of 30 who are so naïve.

God help us.

.....and judges that want to be social workers. They HATE their jobs, so they want to "do some good".

There ain't no bad people. My boy only do what he do cause they aint no jobs and thats the fault of you-know-who. My boy and his cousin may take your shit and rough you up but he won't never shoot you or slit you - bank on that.

I wonder just what the price is for Mr. Owens to find that you (as a criminal) are not a bad person. I smell a shakedown AND a Rat!

Mr. Owens needs to spend some time on Wood Street. There are sociopaths born every day who are mostly "free" of the capacity for imagining what other people feel. Then there are psychopaths, who are completely free of that capacity. They don't all reside on Wood Street, and they are not confined racially, but they are all "bad people." But Mr. Owens knows that. Those who know him know that he is 100% political, with a megadose of ambition.

Note: In Jackson, I suspect that most black voters will scoff at this "no bad people" crap. White folk like me have historically had an exaggerated fear of the "criminal element," but too many black folk have not had to exaggerate. Instead of photographs of weeping mothers, it would be good to see some photos of bystanders with an "I knew it was coming" look on their faces. Jesus wept.

According to the Bible, we are all bad people. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

I'm just glad "I got the Hell out" of my once great hometown back in the 90's.

And I'm not "bashing" Jackson, but at the moment there is no hope for that city.

This is not a problem that will be solved by police or judges. This is a CULTURAL problem. It can only be fixed within the culture. And until that culture quits giving excuses for the crime and starts making demands of those within the culture committing the crime, it will only get worse.

Bad is as bad does. But Owens has correctly estimated the sentiment of many of the local voters who feel much better when a politician places the cause of their children's bad behavior on an evil society dominated by racists and capitalists. The problem is that he will continue to talk, talk, talk, about the "root causes" of crime but do nothing about it but talk. Four or eight years from now when he goes back to a lucrative practice the situation will be worse especially among the people he panders to. But they will like him... until they are the victims of crime themselves.

This guy is lost in left field. Our criminal justice system is an adversarial system. His job is to pursue justice by vigorously prosecuting those accused of crime, not to defend them, whether the system is good or bad, whether the people are good or bad. There are defense lawyers whose job is to defend those people, whether they are good or bad. He should do his job or let someone else do it. If he fills up the jails, so be it. If he can't do that, what's he running for?

The interview is missing more than just consideration for victims. It's also missing consideration for all the potential victims, who may become actual victims unless habitual criminals are removed from society.

Kingfish post the entire interview and stop cherry picking. This is how Robert beat Stan last time. You need to be more complete instead of giving the 75% of voters more motivation because you keep attacking Jody.

A guy from the Southern Poverty Law Center says there are no bad people. So why does the SPLC make its living off of slander as it labels people they disagree with as "hate groups"?

Anonymous said...

You big dummies. He is quoting John Locke’s theories on men be naturally good or bad. He must have been a philosophy major because it is text book. You play into his hands by your comments. Also he has kids in JPS too. Kingfish host a debate for DA and Sheriff candidates.

You left our Rousseau.

as for the "entire interview", it is linked, or did you miss that part?

Jane Mary Nugent said...

“Our” Rousseau, KF? I’d prefer to quote “our” Rev. Jonathan Edwards. His classic sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” pretty much sums it up. Of course there are bad people, you numbskulls! And those of us who are sociopaths must mindfully emulate the empathic ones—it is a learnable skill, mostly a matter of learning certain facial expressions. And, well, you know, just refraining from murdering folks, however much we think they need killin’. It’s really not that hard. And jail seems like a really uncomfortable place, to be avoided at all costs. Those too stupid to sidestep it probably deserve to be there.

2 kids in JPS, 1 in private school. For me, it appears he is doing what he feels is best for each of his child's specific needs.

Sounds to me like you support school choice. On the other hand Jody is opposed to school choice for those that can't pay tuition. Sounds like a complete hypocrite if you ask me. How else would you describe it. He's making a choice based on each of his children. Meanwhile he's fighting to take that same choice away from inner city families that aren't fortunate enough to pay tuition. Sounds like you agree with school choice!!!

Anyone who works for an organization as hateful and corrupt as the Southern Poverty Law Center should not be put in any position of public authority, especially as the D.A.

The Southern Poverty Law Center does a good job of going after the hundreds of hate groups we have in this country. Mississippi is running over with hate groups and they are one of the reasons this state has never made any progress in race relations.

Less than 2,000 KKK members nation wide and your obviously misinformed on many levels. SPLC is a hate group themselves. Director resigned for being a racist and hates Catholics and Jews. Much like the KKK did. So they do have that in common. These guys at SPLC use blacks as pawns and pay them little to both I g on cases.

It blows my mind that people would defend the SPLC... the director Morris Dees was director for George McGovern presidential campaign and he was a well know for his belief in segregation... in 2011 SPLC was ordered to pay over $3 million to Muslim Maajid Nawaz for calling him anti Islamic... also many civil rights leaders have called them a fundraising sham. Founder Morris Dees was actually inducted into the direct marketing hall of fame not to long ago. I also remember 300 black mom's protesting SPLC wanting to close charter schools while SPLC had about 40 white parents that kids went to private schools on there side of room 2 years ago.

The SPLC unashamedly targets Christians who try to live by their faith. Perfect example is the non-profit Alliance Defending Freedom, which has won more cases at the U.S. Supreme Court defending First Amendment freedoms over the last seven years than any other law firm in America. However, the SPLC labels ADF a hate group simply because it disagrees with ADF's Christian beliefs. The SPLC has no credibility whatsoever!

Anonymous said...

The SPLC has a racist founder and director why else would he work for George McGovern the known supporter of segregation. SPLC has many issues and they all were swept under the rug for a short time. Oh well... it's wide open now.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
