Lumumba Endorses Vance

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba endorsed former JPD Chief Lee Vance for Hinds County Sheriff at a press conference today but the endorsement was not an endorsement.  Mr. Lumumba said he was not endorsing Mr. Vance in his capacity as Mayor of Jackson but rather as a private citizen.

Mr. Lumumba praised Vance's record as police chief and welcomed him as a partner in fighting crime in Hinds County.

If he liked him so much, Vance would be police chief. Actions speak louder than words

What in the world? Didn’t he fire him, I mean, not renew his contract? Does he think the voters are that slow?

Well at least the Honorable Baby Chok did something right. Sort of. . .
I always thought Chief Vance would make a great Sheriff, although I don't know that anybody really has the intestinal fortitude to straighten out the mess in Raymond and the Sheriff's office.

When I'm Councilman and Mayor, things will be different, Kingfish.

It is widely known that Vance has promised to bring deputies back into Jackson like Tyrone did and that he is telling people Tyrone will be undersheriff, which would be Tyrone's revenge on Victor without having to go out and run again.

Lumumba's endorsement doesn't carry the same weight in Jackson that it did 3 years ago.

This will turn into the Othor Cain, Tyrone Lewis, Lee Vance circus. Victor and Spooner are the only qualified candidates and Spooner has no chance.

In my best Peter Griffin voice i say, WHOTHAHELLCARES.

A post on a political FB page says Yarber is on this wagon and several others mention Tyrone.

Lumumba probably just doesn't need the hassle of having Vance, Tyron and Yarber working against him. Go along to get along I suppose.

This might have the opposite effect of what Vance had hoped for. This endorsement has really raised some eyebrows with people in the rural areas dependent on the SO.

2:22 PM, I think buzzwords like “intestinal fortitude” are nice and all but they don’t really have any meaning when it comes to managing a large department or organization.

But yet, no podium presser on the murders in the capital city? #perceptionofleadership

They can talk about bringing deputies back to Jackson but some things have changed.... such as a consent decree. The jail has to come first. Period. It's poor design means it sucks resources away from law enforcement duties.

3:28, you read the article, you read the comments, you posted. But you don't care. Ok

HCSO is not the problem. Judges and DA are the problem. JPD, Clinton PD, HCSO bring the bad guys in. And then they get released, discharged or lost, or they sit in Raymond for years at taxpayer expense. Victor should petition the Justice Department to take the jail and let him focus on patrol. He would be sheriff forever.

Has Lumumba endorsed the current airport board? I don't think he appointed any of them, but apparently he thinks they are doing a good job, and if so, his endorsement might garner as many votes as it did attendees at this "media event"

Same ole song and dance. This is gonna bite Vance in the ass. The County doesn't want another Tyrone saturating the city with Deputies.

Tyrone, Yarber, Othor, come on !
The Folks in the County aren't gonna vote on another JPD screw up in, to run the County.

Don't even have to say his name

I like Lee Vance for Sheriff. I don't live in Hinds but I work there. I see Lee regularly and trust him to do the best job. All of my friends at work are backing Vance.

I think this is Good for the city and county. This brings unity! It shows that the mayor and Vance will work together for the good and a safe place for the people. I think that Vance is a very smart guy, he will hire people that will be the Best.

Haha @ 10:48

Just like he did as chief of JPD, really worked out for Jackson. End sarcasm

It was Vance's race to lose 6 months ago and he has done a good job doing so.

The guy who says Spooner has no chance has no clue how the election process works.

Also noted is the fact that Baby Choc is scared to death Spooner will win the day. And he will.

Based exactly on what?

@ yesterday's 3:27.. Why in the world do you think Victor would make another term? Don't people know what he is? Don't people remember the 6 year old kidnapped and murdered and Victor's reaction of drivel? Good grief!

Agree, getting a good DA would help all law enforcement. Also, agreed, the jail is unwieldy and drains the ability to field the number of deputies needed. BUT, we cannot let many of these people back on the streets. Come on Hinds County, we must elect better and harder working judges and a sound DA.

My vote goes for Vance. His leaving JPD after 37 years and the Mayor just do not have anything to do with his abilities. No one else has his experience with the problems existing in this county. Put enforcement where the crime is! The rural areas are not neglected and even the rural population has to use many facilities within Jackson. HCSO is no picnic and needs experience at its helm. Vote Vance.

To the guy bashing Spooner let me ask a few pertinent questions. Between Vance ans Spooner, who has arrested and built cases on more felons, who has more experience in the jail at Raymond, who has more patrol experience, who has more experience working warrants, who worked at the Sheriffs Office when it was at the top of its game. While I am sure Vance didn’t get to be chief of police by coming in last place I can assure the voters it would be a ‘no contest’ between him and Spooner for a more successful sheriff

I’m laughing at all these comments from people thinking Tyrone will be undersheriff.

It’ll be Allen White, and Tyree will be the PIO again. And my prediction comes from folks in the know.

Do you really think the man who wanted to be the face of every drug bust and holiday greeting billboard would sit second fiddle? Please.

"And my prediction comes from folks in the know."

That's very interesting. These people in the know...How do they manage to 'know' who will win the election? Are the Madison County Election Commissioners in charge of this race now?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
