Pork Alert!

State Senators John Polk and Lydia Chassaniol are trying to bring a bit of pork to Winona.  Check out SB #2963:

(2) (a) (i) A special fund, to be designated the "2019 Winona Historic Clock Tower Fund," is created within the State Treasury. The fund shall be maintained by the State Treasurer as a separate and special fund, separate and apart from the General Fund of the state. Unexpended amounts remaining in the fund at the end of a fiscal year shall not lapse into the State General Fund, and any interest earned or investment earnings on amounts in the fund shall be deposited into such fund.

(ii) Monies deposited into the fund shall be disbursed, in the discretion of the Department of Finance and Administration, to assist the City of Winona, Mississippi, in paying the costs associated with the construction and placement of a historic clock tower. Copy of bill.
Looks like the Bacon King is trying to help someone bring home the bacon, as in $250,000 bacon.

Winona will be so much more attractive with this Clock Tower. Being at the epicenter of two U.S. 4-lane highways with no economic or industrial growth for decades, this IS the answer.

How can you have "construction and placement" of a "historic" clock tower? A historic clock tower would not require construction and placement. It would already be there.

They'll probably put the "historic clock tower" in the 100 foot cross right off of I55 and Hwy 82.

But, on Nov. 12, 1955, at precisely 10:04 p.m. on a Saturday night, lightning struck the clock tower in Duck Hill, Miss. providing enough power (1.21 gigawatts, in case you forgot) to send Marty McMartFace and the lifted F250 back to the future to 1985.

This is important history that must be preserved.

And, even more important, Marty was later transported to 2015 when there were flying hoverATVs in Duck Hill.

The future is at stake! Good God!

10:26, I'm sure there is some loophole somewhere that says if it is constructed of .00001% certified "historic" materials it can be considered historic and qualify for all sorts of taxpayer dollars.

It will be next to Kenny's house.

KF - you left out anything in the bill - if there is anything - about where the money comes from to establish this fund.

Technically, from what you have given us here, this is not pork. Establishing a fund is one thing - it's putting public money in the fund that creates the bacon.

If the money all comes from local dollars subject to local votes it isn't pork. BUT, if there is some diversion of state dollars into this fund, then we can hear the sizzle and smell the apple smoke.

They want $250,000 in bond money for this thing.

Anonymous said...

Sadly, this is what most voters want their elected officials to do. Look at all of the celebrating that takes place after every bond bill.

Shocked that there's only 1 Back to the Future Comment.

She's pulled this stunt before by sponsoring legislation to issue bonds for the purchase of Cotesworth, the home of J.Z. George in Carroll County. The then-owner of the home was paid $1 million financed by bonds, and the bill authorizing the money specified an additional $3 million could be issued for repair and upkeep. It was Senate Bill 2333 from 2012 found here...http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2012/html/SB/2300-2399/SB2333IN.htm

Other towns pay for their own clock towers. See Ridgeland.

Save the Clock Tower!

Flyers will be distributed by the Winona Historical Preservation Society on Saturday at 10 AM at the intersection of US 82 and US 51. Y'all slow down.

Sherman Peabody has pledged a donation of 50% of his sales of boiled peanuts to the project, and Mrs. Elsa Raven is donating two quilts to be raffled, so y'all support them, too.

See you there!

Currently Winona has three Mexican restaurants, a Subway, one part-time BBQ joint and a KFC. And they're concerned about a damned clock tower? The only thing cool about Winona is its proximity to the strip club in Vaiden.

Will there also be a fund set aside for the sole purpose to educate today's utes on how to tell time by looking at an actual clock?

You left out the McDonald’s

Don't forget the Waffle House!

Craig Clairborne, Food Editor, Duck Hill MS said...

Y'all ain't from around there. There is ALSO a Huddle House (which closed), AND a Sonic AND a Taco Bell at the truck stop AND a Little Ceasar's at the gas station. That's four fine eating establishments that you missed. Must have blinked. Mee Maw still serves the best chicken after church on Sunday, but you ain't invited.

Sonic is mah favorite. But, it hasn't been the same since Miss Loorene got out of control on her roller skates and went out into 82. Log truck. Not purty. RIP Miss Loorene.

You left out the gas station five miles down on the right that has really good popcorn.

These so called conservatives are always ranting about cutting spending (apparently as long as it does not relate to a bullshit pet project in their districts).

Anonymous said...

12:42, yeah you are so right! Ridgeland could afford their own clock tower after the state incentivized an entire shopping mall. If there has ever been a conservative majority community that enjoyed state pork, its Madison and Rankin counties.

Anonymous said...

This is the kind of BS that should automatically send a do nothing politician packing. Let the city pay for this kind of crap. Better yet, let the idiot who came up with the idea pay for it.

Mississippi Politicians sure love to spend money while patting themselves on the back about fiscal responsibility and cutting taxes.

@4:55 - It’s hazard pay for having to deal with Jackson’s bullshit. You’re welcome.

Anonymous said...

Good pernt axin' how do you recognize and fund a historic site by building it.

Let's break into focus groups at either the gas station of McDonalds and discuss this here thang. Since this is the literal gateway to the Delta and to MSU, we may want to set up some Confederate flag sales in the lower level of the clock tower.

And don't make fun of my idear just on account it's better'n yours.

StarRider said...

Well if it's "historic" then MDAH will step in and the cost will got up ten-fold.

Y'all just stop it now. I'm "bout to bust my gut laffin !!

With all them Mexican eateries in Winoner, you can go head-on and plan on a cost over-run for makin' that thang cuckoo in Spanish and English, simultaneous-like, concurrent and at the same time too.

"Ridgeland could afford their own clock tower after the state incentivized an entire shopping mall."

Can you back that up 4:55? What the hell incentives were gotten that provided for the clock at the intersection of Wheatley and County Line?

And while you're at it, please tell us what pork Madison has gotten?

Anonymous said...

4:55 - Two days ago you made a claim about Ridgeland's clock being paid for out of state pork and Madison receiving state pork. You have declined the challenge to back up those claims. That pretty much means you're guilty of fabrication, if not lying.

Kingfish said...

Ren. got state sales tax rebate through MDA program. Ridgeland had to issue a resolution supporting the application but it is the state that gives the rebate, not Ridgeland.

Anonymous said...

But his comment was not about Ren (as you call it). His comment suggested that a state rebate paid for the clocktower near Northpark Mall. Perhaps I misunderstood his claim, but that's what I understood him to say.

Or if he (and you by extension) are suggestion the deal at Ren allowed the city to pry up money for other items, perhaps the Ren deal also paid for police cars and the new fire-truck.

What's the guy's bitch anyway?

This has been a discussion in Winona for years. The old Montgomery County was in downtown Winona and there was a clock tower. The courthouse was torn down and moved to west side of 51. No clock tower was ever built. The old clock was gone. Now they want to put it up again.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
