Poll: Hood over Tate (UPDATED. Poll posted below)

Note: JJ obtained a copy of the poll and crosstabs. This post was bumped up after it was originally posted on December 21.

WLBT reported a Mason-Dixon poll said The Hair led the Tater in the race for Governor:

Part two of a Mason-Dixon Poll, conducted last week in Mississippi, focuses on the 2019 Governor's race.  The pollsters asked registered voters about a head-to-head race between Attorney General Jim Hood and Lt. Governor Tate Reeves.

Hood has the early advantage. Statewide, 43% of registered voters support Hood, while 37% back Reeves and a very significant 20% are undecided. Hood draws over 80% of Democrats, 14% of Republicans and leads 38%-33% among independent voters. If he runs, it appears Hood will receive strong backing from the state’s African-American voters. Rest of article.

Governor Hood, how do you do.

Anonymous said...

I think as conservatives start to see that Hood actually might have a chance, more of them will speak up and support Hood. A lot of people don't want to go out on that limb unless there is a chance he can win.

Tate is not popular in his own party. He was an up and comer as Treasurer, but as Junior Governor he has made a lot of enemies. I'll have a Hood sign in my yard.

Anonymous said...

Hope Hood runs. It will be a pleasure working to send him to defeat.

Anonymous said...

Phil's lasting legacy will be getting a Dem elected as governor. Nice going!

Anonymous said...

Just wait for more drip drip drip of corruption/influence scandals to come from the legislature. Hood will put em all in the same boat and pounce.

Hood will not make it out of the primary.

Anonymous said...

I was leaning Hood until I heard him speak. The AG is obsessed with power and further to the left I ever imagined. The more people hear him speak, the better even Tate looks.

First voted Republican in late 70's for Gil Carmichael. Have voted Republican ever since, but would vote for Hood over Reeves.

Anonymous said...

I really don't know which way I will vote. I will have to mull it over.

Anonymous said...

This one is sure to draw out the sock puppets!

Anonymous said...

Well, any of the Reeves haters who think the black Democrats in Hinds County are going to cease being mad long enough to vote for Hood after his dogged persecution of RSS simply don't know shit from shinola. The truck driver demonstrated who is running the show and it ain't the remnant of white Donkeycrats in Mississippi.

Yep!... Hood over Tate... and Clinton over Trump in a landslide... polls polls polls...

My vote is open to whoever let’s me buy OTC sudafed at Walgreens again.

Hood will, assume he makes it out of the Dem primary over his AA opponent, will have to take stands re: national democrat positions - something he has never had to do in previous races. Being on the top of the ticket will draw much more attention to his 'philosophy', or lack thereof. One of two possible results - either the Dem, particularly AA, wanes, or the Repub fascination disappears. Long time from now til then; much water to flow under the bridge.

Check the accuracy of polls taken two years before an election in previous years. Hell, in many of them the actual candidates/nominees were not even known (although people thought they knew who would be the nominees) two years prior.

I nominate JIMMY BARKSDALE a proven leader---If he can run FedEx and Netscape he can make Mississippi come alive.

The main thing, he is extremely wealthy and will not have to take bribes or steal...............

I am a Republican (lifelong) but I will not vote for Tater Tot....I may consider voting for Lynn Finch.................

Anonymous said...

Hood may not win the governor's race, but rest assured that you can bet your last dollar on Democrats to regain control of the House and if they run anymore Roy Moore's they will win the Senate too. With Trump being Trump you guys will finally figure out that he was never a Republican but an opportunist. No the Democrats won't impeach him, they will just let him and Pence die on the vine.

Anonymous said...

There will be a number of people cross over to vote for Hood. One that will be noticed.

Anonymous said...

Show me a poll that is not meaningless. Did they poll those who showed up at the dedication of the CR Museum or was this the one taken at Captain D's on 55 Frontage? I've yet to hear anybody say they've been polled.

Anonymous said...

Not after the tax cuts start hitting paychecks. Guess again.

Anonymous said...

Who paid for the poll?

Anonymous said...

Tot's are in full damage control mode. They knew this poll was coming out so they launched a preemptive strike with an email blast yesterday. Their attack on Hood centered on tying Hood to "national democrats". Talk inside Tate's camp is laced with consternation. 2019 shaping up to be a real barn-burner with slash and burn tactics guaranteed. But make no mistake, the Tot's are sweating blue perspiration.

Anonymous said...

Jim Barksdale. Funny. You just proved everybody’s point. Nobody with his intelligence, expertise and money would ever want to be governor unless they had a huge love of power....which is what leads to the stupid shenanigans. Call it a paradox.

I think “Jimmy” is content to keep doing deals and giving away money behind the scenes.

with our state losing population according to census estimates, it's clear that a change is needed--and another vote for a republican who sets policies that hurt our state isn't what we need. just take a trip to alabama or tennessee and just see how much better those states are doing. the last eight years have been harsh on our state...

Anonymous said...

The poll shows what a mistake it will be if the GOP does not find a better candidate. For Hood to be ahead this early it shows Reeves to be an extremely poor candidate.

Anonymous said...

Other than Malcolm McMillin, I have never voted for a Democrat in my life. I can't wait to vote for Jim Hood over that faux redneck Reeves.

Anonymous said...

I've voted Republican for Governor every election since Haley Barbour first ran, but I will gladly vote for Jim Hood for Governor next election. Screw Tater.

Tate Reeves is an absolute disaster waiting to happen. Who in the world actually likes this dude? Get ready for a democrat governor my fellow Mississippians.

The state has lost citizens instead of gaining in the past 5 years and this idiot passed massive tax cuts, assuming trickle down was going to work in Mississippi. We are fiscally, going backwards under that sorry trolls watch as Lt. Gov. Don't give him a promotion!

ANYONE but Tater in the Republican Primary! PLEASE!!!!

Where’s the link to the poll? Nowhere.
What methodology was used? Who knows
What were the demographic numbers, etc?

Someone pays for this poll, “leaks” the results to the press, and then doesn’t make the polling data public?

...Sounds legit.

I bet most readers could guess who’s behind it.

I've voted straight Republican for the last 20 years. I will gladly vote for anyone that runs against the egotistical and pathetic Tate Reeves. Hope the MSGOP finds a lot better quality candidate to run than lil Tate, if not I'll be sending Hood another check and support/vote.

One scenario: Thad quits. Harper gets appointed. Tate runs for Harpers seat as he has a good chance in that region. Walks away from guv race to save face. Just a thought.

Right on! Your neighborhood association can't even reach agreement on four-wheelers on the sidewalk much less get together over tacos to discuss politics.

Unless you reside in a 'cleansed neighborhood' in the woods of Madison County, your neighbors are black, white, Hispanic, democrat, republican and independent. And they're not stupid enough to respond to some dumbass flyer regarding block voting.

5:12 Please look at our State's voting demographics and include age for top 2% and explain which tax benefits in the reform bill will make a difference in voting.

Aside from the fact that more than a few of us are worried still about what's embedded in a bill that was done without hearings, behind closed doors and required more than a little horse trading to pass within party lines, you are counting on major economic growth between now and the primaries and even more by November.

You hope that I will like that I'll get more monthly income. In my rarified for Mississippi income bracket, I won't much notice though it will be nearly $20000. My house is paid for too. Wonder how some upper middles who are in new houses with mortgages are going to come out...especially if health care costs also go up as expected..

And, you count on the Republicans who have worried about the deficit, no longer worrying.

You are also counting on those same Republicans who have never trusted Russia to suddenly trust Putin because Trump apparently does.

And, you trust us not to recognize totally nuts if you put up the Roy Moore types.

You are hoping Lincoln wasn't right and it's now possible to fool enough people all the time.

Anonymous said...

MOE +/- 4%, dubious sampling, better than Chism. Its neck-and-neck, Hood knows it, Republicans will out fundraise Democrats 2:1 minimum.

Anonymous said...

@8:58

Liberals are stupid, but you really believe that Tater's inventory tax cut has resulted in any economic improvement for the State?

Tater's tax cut was so effective, it also lowered Alabama and Arkansas's unemployment and resulted in their higher general fund revenue!

With that kind of power, Tater will probably end world hunger with a Mississippi inventory tax cut.

The reality is that the US economy has improved and Mississippi has too. A better question might be why isn't Mississippi improving as fast as the nation or our neighbors in Arksansas and Alabama. We've seen a 5 year GDP improvement of 2.65% while Alabama is up 4.29% and Arkansas is up 5.19%.

Anonymous said...

Tate has done what he promised, and he has my support. Everyone in my circle is supporting him as well.

Anonymous said...

You're right 8:58, I shouldn't have used "Running into the ground". I meant to say "being permanently on the very bottom". I don't consider still being #49 or #50 in the country as something to be proud of.

Nuts...........

Anonymous said...

All these Tate haters and so called lifelong republicans need to get a grip. Go look at California. Gov. Moonbeam had to drastically cut programs to try to get their budget manageable. And they are still facing a recession because they are not providing relief to the taxpayers too. I guess that's ok because he's a Democrat doing. At least we are trimming the fat and making sure we have some tax relief. Combine that with the new Federal Corporate tax rate that is coming, the lower Income taxes, we will see the benefits of the measures they took over the last few years. The only problem with the in-state budget cuts is that the legislature didn't require the fat to be cut from the top and instead let these leaders cut direct service programs. The poster from yesterday said it best. Once Hood has to actually speak on Democratic issues on a national level he will be toast.

Nice article in the CL today that compliments this discussion.....we are the only state in the south with a declining population for several years in a row.

And its the most productive and educated that are leaving which means this is a self-perpetuating problem. And it started under Bryant.

Good points about Alabama's and Arkansas' GDP being up.

But you also have to consider Alabama was able to bring in some big companies within the last couple of years. Arkansas has been progressive with generating revenues for the state and finding new industry. Within the last couple of years, Arkansas has established a lottery and legalized medical marijuana. Besides that, they both have major attractions that brings in outside dollars. Alabama has Birmingham, Mobile, Gulf Shores, Robert Trent Golf Trail, Alabama football, they are trending in the right direction.

Arkansas cashes in on outside dollars too.

Mississippi has a branding problem and nothing to attract outsiders to bring in money to spend in this state.

Tate Reeves is a stubborn kind of stupid and his supporters are o.k. with the status quo.

While you clearly indicated something tangible to measure against, that information will fall on apathetic deaf ears.

The futility is suffocating and we pay dearly for the amount of ignorance that stagnates in this state, by electing politicians of the same ilk as Tate Reeves.

Anonymous said...

Hey, Dems, don't tire yourselves posting over the first bait floating by. Mississippians have not forgotten all the attorneys hired by the AG and paid by the taxpayer. Same people who finance Hood. We don't cotton too well to paying for campaigns that way. You'll have to admit it is rather "Clintonian".

Anonymous said...

I see that PittPather, Tom Head, and Donner K are posting a lot lately.

Plain ol' Catfish said...

Though 9:51, quite frankly, I don't think more government spending is necessarily the solution either. Truth be told I've heard absolutely nothing innovative from Jim Hood beyond his call to not do what the Republicans are doing. The pre-Reeves tax cut days status quo is what got us here and I don't think maintaining, or returning to, that status quo will lead to economic growth.

Anonymous said...

There is no way Tate will win! If Lynn decides to run she will get the African American vote because Hood has shown his disrespect for the African American community with the Robert S. Smith shenanigans.

In fact, I will support AA against him. He and his brother Tom Hood needs to be replaced as well.

What happens if tea party guy Chris McDaniel and Steve Bannon get into the mix? This would bring out all of the Rankin and Jones County crazies. McDaniel beats Reeves in Republican primary. Showdown between Hood and McDaniel. That would be fun to watch.

Tate Reeves will not win the Metro area which is vital in statewide elections. The big block of state employee's, teacher's, and their families', living in the metro area, votes will go to his opponent due to lack of pay raises, his arrogance, and poor policy. Most of the public do not realize that state employees have not received a pay raise since July of 2007 over 10 years. How many of you in public sector have worked for 10+ years for the same amount of money, really less money when you factor in inflation. State workers and teachers will not vote for him. When Tate comes asking for your vote ask him why the legislature bought a new $200 million dollar accounting system (MAGIC) which is old a system designed for private enterprise and is a piece of crap. Ask him why, he as a public servant, is on available for meetings to donors to his campaign. Ask him why the legislature is exempt from using, the supposedly cost saving, travel trip optimizer system they implemented for agencies. Ask him why since he is so hell-bent on reducing the size of government why the legislature size has not been reduced and why they are inefficient and can't get all of their work done during regular session eliminating costly special sessions. Ask him why since it"s his goal to cut expenses, why the legislature has two retirements PERS and SLRP. And finally, ask him exactly what happens to the interest on his enormous campaign war chest. I wlll be voting Democrat for the first time in my life if he is the Republican nominee for gov.

Ill vote for the Democrat for the first time all day long if he says he will do two things. 1)Keep undocumented aliens out of our state and 2)goes out and find more businesses to Mississippi. All the other issues are moot right now. Tate showed his weakness about five years ago in not doing what he could to keep Mississippians safe as he went along with the Chamber of Commerce with the immigration bill. He is too establishment.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
